SEA CONVERSATIONS: NOV 2017

WATCH » Find out how we’re doing this year; and discover the small and big things in 2017 that have encouraged me in my personal life.

Tim’s Note

Readying Ourselves Hello everyone! I’m happy and excited to be talking with you on this platform for the first time.

LOOKING BACK ON 2017 We’re facing an unusual year, where we are below target. Although this is a serious issue that we must turn around, it’s not something to despair about. SEA is a key MCO to deliver growth globally, and we will fix things together that will help us prepare for a great 2018.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2018 2018 will be all about delivering our plans as 1 TEAM with 1 GOAL. In 2018, we will work as one towards: • Sustainably accelerating our growth and our profit for each country. No exceptions! The markets are strong and there are many opportunities left to catch. It’s up to us to make our own success. Continue >>

REACH…ING OUR OPERATORS Are you geared up for Reach? With Reach, the global business in UFS will focus on growing the number of Operators that buy at least 1 UFS SKU in the last six months. 2017

We help each other and challenge one another to do even better. UFS is nothing without our people, and our people must always be celebrated. In life, even if you work very hard, the outcome is sometimes different. Don’t worry about that. Give your utmost best, and be rest assured your hard work is appreciated by all of us. Celebrate progress, even if small, and always keep pushing yourself! Yours truly, Tim

EXPOSED!

^ BJ is both excited and nervous about his wedding. “I really want to give Diane the wedding that she deserves!”

Ending the Year with...

UFS Philippines MD BJ Carreon: “3 Things I’ll Like to Celebrate” As we end another fruitful year in UFS, we ask BJ Carreon, Managing Director at UFS Philippines, about the three things from 2017 that he wants to celebrate and is thankful for. Let’s go!

CELEBRATION #1: YAY, HE GETS HITCHED! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, BJ! How did you meet your wife, Diane Kimberly Tan? We met when Diane was a management trainee in Unilever in 2004. At one point, she reported to me when I was the Regional Sales Manager of Central Philippines. Don’t worry, everything happened within the company guidelines! We’re both in Unilever till today, and Diane is leading the Modern Trade business of Supermarkets and Channels of the Future for CD Retail in the Philippines, which has been a challenging but rewarding journey for her.

What are you looking forward to in your new season of marriage? It’s going to be a lot of expectations on us, but we’d like to see that as an adventure, where we rely on and support each other. We want to be the best version of ourselves!

^ BJ with the Philippines leadership team.

CELEBRATION #2: THE PHILIPPINES TEAM’S UNITY How about at work? What are some of the things in 2017 that should be celebrated? There are many things to celebrate but I’ll nail it down to three. The first is how the team have responded well to the needs of operators and met the double-digit growth that is very, very close to the MCO target – and they did all of this despite the numerous internal limitations that we face. It was amazing to see each person working together in the toughest times and going beyond the call of duty. The second thing I’m proud of is how we’ve kept to the UFS mission of being purpose-driven. We’ve focused on being operator-centric. For example, we’ve delivered informative workshops to operators through our Chefmanship Academies and localized ideation sessions. With these services, we give cooks, owners and chefs the knowledge to be competitive and respond to the demands of international diners.

EXPOSED! Finally, I’m very happy that we are starting to develop a stronger go-to-market plan to reach our non-visited operators. We have very good results from our UFS website and Facebook page, as well as our e-commerce “experiments” with Lazada, Honest Bee and Puregold. The team’s passion to experiment and respond to challenges was key to these projects’ success.

^ UFS Philippines at a team-building event this year. Through Funlasang Pinoy, the team is giving operators inspiration and capabilities to elevate Filipino food to be the next big thing in the global food scene.

CELEBRATION #3: THE RICH FLAVOURS AND HERITAGE OF PINOY CUISINE What is one thing that must be celebrated in your country? Our local cuisine, of course! It has been an exciting time for UFS Philippines; we’re working with all kinds of people in the culinary industry to put Filipino cuisine on the world map. There is a lot of innovation that can happen alongside our culinary traditions, such as putting a twist on a well-loved meal or presenting simple dishes in new ways. And with digital, we can lead the food revolution for Pinoy dishes.

EXPOSED! What’s your favourite local dish? Kansi, a local beef tendon and bone stew dish. I like it because of its strong beef taste, which is balanced with the sweet and sour notes of Batuan, a local fruit from the Western Visayas region that gives the dish its unique flavor.

^ One of the crucial ingredients in Kansi is Batuan, a fruit which adds a zesty tang to the Pinoy dish. (Left photo credit: Instagram user @chefjaclaudico)

Who would you like to thank or celebrate in life? Filipino chefs and operators. Some of them don’t have formal training, but they have lots of experience, heritage and pride in their craft and business. Because of them, UFS is inspired to do the work that we do.

^ BJ in his element: eating and talking with chefs and foodies!

Also, many millennial chefs are gamechangers. They’re sincere and passionate about preserving and expanding authentic Filipino cuisine. We’re always excited to meet and work with different people who have different backgrounds and ideas that can change the Filipino landscape.

Our Joys in 2017

What are some of the things that have brought joy to UFS peeps this year? We get them to share their best highlights in 2017. #HelloSingapore

Yudista Wijaya – Asst Marketing Manager, SEA

“In September 2017, I moved to Singapore for my new role. It’s one of the biggest milestones for me this year. Now, I can take a break from the bad traffic of Jakarta and get cheaper flight tickets! But most importantly (and more seriously), this is an opportunity to live in another country, learn about different cultures and enrich my life. I label myself “a full time traveler” – life is about experiencing new places and things.”

#Fatherhood

Lim Zhirong – HR Director, AAME

“I became father for the first time and it was a life-changing experience. The joy of watching him grow up is priceless. Fatherhood has made me a better and more mature man!”

“My personal joy in 2017 is working happily with my team members and achieving our Salted Egg goals. This has really been one of the best moments for me in the year, as it affirms my belief that success is possible when everyone comes together to make it happen.”

#RelationshipGoals

Neshya Alexandra – Key Account Manager, Chains (ID)

#AlwaysLearning

Kal Lim – Asst Key Account Manager (SG)

“My joy in 2017 is completing my parttime studies for a Bachelor of Business Studies in Marketing. Lifelong learning is crucial, as it allows me to pick up relevant skills and knowledge. With greater confidence, it enables me to embrace changes in this era with enthusiasm. I also facilitated my first DSR training this year. I was one of the participants listening attentively five years ago. I would never expect that five years later, I would be the one standing in front of a group facilitating the training. Applying the skills and knowledge I have acquired from my marketing degree allows me to communicate with the participants using a more effective and efficient approach. UFS has given me the opportunity to explore something new, and I’m enjoying it!”

“In May 2017, I committed to sharing the rest of my life with this kind-hearted guy, who loves me for me and nothing else, and who never fails to make me laugh even when I have no reason to smile. We were actually junior high school friends. He was my secret admirer ;). So we’ve known each other for nine years. We met again in a small reunion six years after junior high school, and then dated for four years before he proposed.” Continue >>

Empowering Women

Are you a parent with young daughters? Check out Dove’s “Uniquely Me” guide, which helps girls to build their self-esteem through practical tips. The guide comes after the release of the 2017 Dove Global Girls Beauty and Confidence Report in October – the most comprehensive study among girls that the brand has carried out. More than 5,000 girls aged 10 to 17 across 14 countries participated. Dove’s Global Brand VP Sophie Galvani (pictured) sums up the situation:

More than half of all girls (54%) globally do not have high body esteem, and a girl aged 17 is more likely to experience lower happiness and life satisfaction than one who is 10. There are positive stories too. Girls are agreeing that too much importance is placed on appearance as a source of happiness. They are seeking new female role models, using social media to express their individuality, taking time for self-care or boldly declaring their pride in being a female.
