JUSTIFY DRAWS POST 7 FOR PREAKNESS STAKES By Alicia Wincze Hughes t @BH_AHughes

ressure, as it pertains to a competitive landscape, is often the product of privilege. The weight of expectations attached to an athlete is usually in direct correlation to an achievement or talent, with the burden only growing as the hype is validated. It is, in the grand scheme of things, a great issue to manage— which is why Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert was happy to have attendees of the post position draw for the 143rd Preakness Stakes (G1) audibly react when his unbeaten Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Justify was deemed the 1-2 morning-line favorite to add the middle leg of the Triple Crown to his résumé. "When you're 1-2, I always tell everybody that there is room for error," Baffert said of Justify, who will break from post 7 in the field of eight entered for Saturday's 1 3/16mile test at Pimlico Race Course. "I like being the favorite. I don't want to be 50-1. I like knowing that I have a chance to win. "When you come and you're thinking … you're going to need the Stanford marching band to interfere a little bit, you don't feel that well." The company around Justify is good enough that it won't merit a fiasco the level of the 1982 college football incident to get him beat this weekend, but it will take something extraordinary to knock

off a colt who has yet to be knocked back by the flurry of challengers that have come at him. From his Feb. 18 maiden win at Santa Anita Park to his 2 1/2-length victory over juvenile male champion Good Magic on the first Saturday in May, Justify hasn't shown any dents in the form that allowed him to become the first horse since 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby after not starting as a 2-year-old. The well-documented bruise to his left hind heel has appeared a non-issue in his training since returning to the track last week. And Baffert, seeking his seventh Preakness win, said he sees similarities between the son of Scat Daddy and his four prior Derby winners that took the Woodlawn Vase. "I think it's less pressure for us because the Kentucky Derby, for me, was so special," Baffert said. "We all want that second leg but … coming in here I feel the same as THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2018

I did when I won it with the other ones. "The reason I think (all his Derby winners took the Preakness) is they were good horses, they were the best horse, and they were doing really, really well. They were peaking at the right time … and they trained well, they came out of the race well. I think with him, he's doing the same. I think he's doing really well. We just need some racing luck." Post position isn't a huge factor in such a short field, but the seven post is nonetheless an advantageous starting point for Justify with Good Magic, the 3-1 morning-line second choice, in post 5 and graded stakes winner Quip and his early speed drawn down on the rail. "I don't really give (jockey Mike Smith) too many instructions," Baffert said. "There are a lot of fast horses in there, a lot of speed. I would have been fine with an inside (continued on page 5) PAGE 4 OF 31

JUSTIFY DRAWS POST 7 FOR PREAKNESS STAKES (continued from page 4) draw, but you know on the outside you can see what is going on. I'm just glad to be here. It's been a long journey the last six, seven, eight months." At the top of the stretch in the Kentucky Derby, Good Magic was able to make trainer Chad Brown's stomach flip in a good way as it looked for a moment he might be poised to go by Justify. The son of Curlin was game to hold for second after sitting in the first flight off the quick fractions and has left his two-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner impressed with how he has maintained his energy since. "He really had to bounce out of the race really well and gain his weight back quickly," said Brown, who upset the apple cart with new shooter Cloud Computing in last year's Preakness. "I also wanted to see a horse that was moving as well as he was going into the Derby. I also wanted to see his energy level get back to what it was before the race. I would think that after a hard race like the Kentucky Derby in those kind of conditions, it would have been a bit of a longshot to do all that and have him look the way I wanted him to look. "And, lo and behold, he looked terrific coming out of the race, just a week removed. That was remarkable. I was very taken aback by how well the horse came out of the race and how strong he galloped at Belmont." Both Justify and Good Magic handled the raindrenched Churchill Downs track without issue and will likely have another off track in their future. Rain is in the forecast every day in Baltimore heading into the Preakness.

Like Justify, 12-1 morning-line third choice Quip is co-owned by WinStar Farm and China Horse Club—a situation which caused brief pause when deciding whether the son of Distorted Humor would indeed head to the Preakness. Quip's connections said if Justify was to be destined to head to New York with a Triple Crown on the line, he would face all comers— including the Rodolphe Brisset trainee who captured the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) and finished second in the Arkansas Derby (G1). "I think the expectation for him is he's going to run an 'A' race, and we'll see if that's good enough," said Elliott Walden, president of WinStar Farm. "He's doing well, he's got the right spacing between races. He's had two good works at Keeneland, so he's sitting on a big race." Living legend D. Wayne Lukas joins Baffert in having saddled six winners of the Preakness Stakes, his most recent coming when he upset the field with Oxbow in 2013. The 82-year-old trainer is bringing a two-pronged attack this year in grade 1 winner Sporting Chance and graded stakes winner Bravazo, who put in a sneaky-good run to finish sixth in the Kentucky Derby. "I'm excited because I like the big arena. I like to compete," said Lukas. "I think the same horses that were up on front will be there again. I hope to be a little closer with both of mine, but we may not be able to do much about it. The thing that makes Justify so tough is that he has the ability to dictate the race and make his own luck. Some of us have to have a little help. He has the ability to do it when he wants to. He's the best horse." BH

LUKAS HORSES TAKE IT EASY IN PIMLICO SLOP By Jeremy Balan t @BH_JBalan

rom D. Wayne Lukas' perch May 16, at the far end of the Pimlico Race Course stakes barn, he explained how he goes about his business. "You've got to read what's in front of you," the Hall of Fame trainer said from a chair he brought with him from Kentucky that you'd expect to encounter on a backyard patio, as horses walked the shedrow in front of him. "What you do is you try to determine their energy level—how they're adapting every day. So I can't tell you (what I'm going to do). "Tomorrow I'll make a decision. I might make it going down that lane (to the track)." On Wednesday, three days away from the Preakness Stakes (G1) Lukas brought Bravazo and Sporting Chance to run in, the 82-year-old conditioner didn't like the Pimlico main track. Heavy thunderstorms drenched the Baltimore area Tuesday night, so Bravazo and Sporting Chance didn't do any exerting training on the Pimlico dirt. Robert Baker and William Mack's Sporting Chance went out first and jogged around on the outside rail. Calumet Farm's homebred Bravazo jogged and even cantered at times around the same path. Both schooled in the indoor Pimlico paddock on a drizzly morning. It's even possible—if forecasts are correct and rainy conditions continue through Preakness weekend—the Lukas pair won't gallop for the last few days heading into the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Bravazo heads the wrong way May 16 at Pimlico Race Course

"If I'm gonna let them roll over it, I'm gonna get paid for it. I've got them fit and sound, so if I take that chance, there's gotta be something at the wire instead of you guys," Lukas said with a playful swipe at the assembled media. Lukas may have opted not to gallop his pair, but Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) runner-up Good Magic took his second spin around the Baltimore oval Wednesday. The Curlin colt again appeared to take to the wet track. Unlike his first gallop at Pimlico on Tuesday, the Chad Brown trainee had little if any sweat built up on his walk back to the barn. "It was his first day yesterday, and maybe a little more hot than today," said Brown's on-site assistant at Pimlico, Jose Hernandez. "He galloped well, and he handled the track really well. He looks good. You've got to gallop him, and the track was going to be the same whether he went out then or later." The fourth Preakness horse on the Pimlico grounds, Winchell Thoroughbreds' homebred Tenfold, walked in the stakes barn Wednesday. The Curlin colt arrived at Pimlico in the afternoon Tuesday and will go to the track for the first time Thursday, according to trainer Steve Asmussen's assistant, Scott Blasi. The stakes barn will get more crowded later Wednesday when the four remaining Preakness horses arrive, along with other stakes entrants. Kentucky Derby winner Justify, Derby eighth-place finisher Lone Sailor, and Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) victor Quip will fly in from Kentucky, while Federico Tesio Stakes winner Diamond King will take Interstate 95 from his base at Parx Racing. PREAKNESS WEEKEND MARKS MATCH SERIES RELAUNCH By Frank Angst t @BH_FAngst

W

hile the season's second classic will highlight the weekend's racing, the Preakness Stakes (G1)—as the Mid-Atlantic region's biggest race of the year—also provides a spotlight for the relaunch of the MATCH Series. Through a cooperative effort of tracks, horsemen's groups, and breeders' groups in the Mid-Atlantic region, this year's MATCH (MidAtlantic Thoroughbred Championships) Series offers bonuses for owners, trainers, and breeders based on performance in 25 stakes races throughout the region from mid-May through midSeptember. There are five divisions—dirt long, dirt sprint, turf sprint, fillies and mares dirt sprint, and fillies and mares turf sprint—offering five races for 3-year-olds and older. Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association chairman and CEO Alan Foreman, the driving force behind reviving the series that was first offered from 19972001, said the series will focus on divisions that might have been a bit overlooked. He noted divisions like 3-year-old male and 3-year-old fillies already are performing well. "We didn't take the obvious divisions that will guarantee large fields because when you look at those divisions, there's no growth potential there, whether it's handle or otherwise," Foreman said. "Also, the divisions that might have been some of the more obvious divisions might have been more difficult to coordinate." That coordination includes the fact that any weekend a MATCH Series race is contested, no other track in the region will offer a race in that division. Foreman credited Mike Dempsey of the Monmouth Park racing office for emphasizing that point and helping to make it a reality. BLOODHORSE DAILY

"One of the things that we said we wanted to try to do here is sequence the races in the division with the understanding that the tracks would not run a competing race against a Series race," Foreman said. That goal would see racing directors go to work on a chalkboard, moving race dates a bit one way or the other until the 2018 MATCH Series schedule was in place. "To their credit, the racing directors and the directors of the horsemen's groups were able to work together to design the series of races that we have," Foreman said, noting that nearly every track gave some concession to make the schedule work. Total purse money of the 25 races is $2.9 million. Horsemen will compete for $450,000 in bonus money, all contributed by the participating horsemen's organizations. The first-, second-, and third-place points-earning owners in each division will earn $20,000, $15,000, or $10,000. The top three points-earning trainers in each division will earn $15,000, $10,000 or $5,000. The MATCH Series overall top points-earning owner will win $50,000, and the top points-earning trainer will earn $25,000. New to the series this year: State breeder organizations are each contributing $10,000 in bonus money, and the breeder of the top points-earning male and female from each state program will receive $5,000. The breeder bonus is structured to keep that money in-state. Four divisions will get cranked up this weekend on Black-Eyed Susan Day (May 18) and Preakness Day (May 19) at Pimlico Race Course. On Friday, eight female sprinters are entered in the Skipat Stakes, and the Jim McKay Turf Sprint has attracted an expected field of 10. On Saturday, the series continues with 14 entered in The Very One Stakes (fillies and mares turf sprint) and nine entered in the grade 3 Maryland

PREAKNESS WEEKEND MARKS MATCH SERIES RELAUNCH (continued from page 7) Sprint Stakes (dirt sprint). That's an average of 10.25 entries for the MATCH Series' first four races. The long dirt division gets going May 26 at Monmouth Park with the Salvator Mile (G3). Besides Pimlico and Monmouth, other participating tracks include Delaware Park, Laurel Park, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, Parx Racing, and Presque Isle Downs. The series will culminate with championship weekend Sept. 15-16 at Laurel, Parx, and Presque Isle. The individual purses of the races in the MATCH Series range from $75,000 to $200,000. "We didn't want to load the series with big stakes races because that's a caliber of horse not everyone has," Foreman said. Horsemen's groups will fund the owner and trainer bonuses, while the tracks involved will pay for marketing and promotion, Foreman said. The tracks are contributing an amount equal to 25% of what their corresponding horsemen's group contributed. There is no special nomination fee required to participate in the series, which awards points for the top six placings for each race. A horse must participate

BLOODHORSE DAILY

in at least three races within a division to be eligible for bonuses, and horses receive five bonus points if they compete in all races in the series. "We will see how the series goes," Foreman said. "You obviously want large fields, you want increases in handle, you want an event that everybody thinks is good for racing and exciting and helps promote and market the sport, because there's nothing like this event in racing." The series partners are the Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and its affiliates in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; the Pennsylvania Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association; the Maryland Jockey Club (Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park); Delaware Park; Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment (Parx); Penn National Gaming (Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course); Darby Development (Monmouth Park); Eldorado Resorts (Presque Isle Downs & Casino); Maryland Horse Breeders Association; Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association; Thoroughbred Breeders' Association of New Jersey; and Delaware Thoroughbred Certified Program. Foreman noted that putting the MATCH Series together has been an extension of the cooperation the Mid-Atlantic region has enjoyed on issues like uniform medication policies in recent years. BH

FASIG-TIPTON MIDLANTIC SALE

MUCHO MACHO MAN COLT FLASHES SPEED IN SALE WORKOUT By Ron Mitchell t @BH_RMitchell

ALLISON JANEZIC/LYDIA A. WILLIAMS

ith intermittent showers—some heavy at times— and moderate temperatures in the mid-70s, the May 16 second session of the under tack workouts for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale was in stark contrast to the previous day's sunny, sticky weather with temperatures in the 90s. Despite the elements, which began with a severe thunderstorm late Tuesday and continued off and on throughout the day Wednesday, the workouts in preparation for the May 21-22 auction at the Maryland State Fairgrounds near Timonium went off without a hitch, and the track seemed a little zippier as a result of the additional moisture. Highlighting the day's works was the fastest quarter-mile breeze during the first two days of :21 1/5, turned in by a Mucho Macho Man colt consigned by Kirkwood Stables as Hip 278. On Wednesday, nine juveniles cataloged for the sale shared the under tack show's fastest eighth-mile time of :10 1/5. Kirkwood's Kip Elser said the bullet work was not a surprise, noting the colt had also worked fast in preparation for the Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-year-olds in training sale before being bought back for $55,000.

"He was at OBS in March and breezed very well and was ignored," Elser said of the colt, who was a $95,000 purchase from Select Sales at the 2017 Keeneland September yearling sale. "He was a nice horse then, and he's a nice horse now." With a Noble Mission colt (Hip 365) sharing the second-fastest quarter-mile breeze time Wednesday, the speedy presence by the Kirkwood horses at Midlantic was a change from the consignment's workout protocol prior to this year's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale in South Florida. Rather than subject his Gulfstream sale entrants to the rigors of timed workouts, Elser opted to showcase the group to buyers by having them gallop over the track. "It wasn't that the (Gulfstream) sale horses couldn't (work fast)," Elser said, adding the gallop-only horses were well-received by buyers and sold well. "We chose to show people that they shouldn't have to. It turned out very well. For this sale, we turned it up a notch and had some horses that performed well." Elser was among those who gave high marks to state fairgrounds maintenance director Don "Chief" Denmeyer and his crew for sealing and then harrowing the track and maintaining it throughout the trying conditions. "You never feel good when you have (rain) jump up like that, but these guys have always done a good job at keeping this track safe," he said. "So was I worried about it being safe? No." "I can't say enough about the job they do here," said Randy Hartley of Hartley/ DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, which had one of the co-fastest eighth-mile workers in Hip 204, a More Than Ready colt. "This track has a lot of sand in it, so it can hold water really well and it doesn't get slick. It's different than a lot of other tracks. And it's so banked, they can get the water off it. The track was a little slower yesterday, and the times were a little slower, but that's what you get on dirt." The under tack show concludes Thursday with a session scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. BH

FASIG-TIPTON MIDLANTIC SALE

MIDLANTIC SALE REPRESENTS SOFT LAUNCH FOR WHITE PINE By Ron Mitchell t @BH_RMitchell

BLOODHORSE DAILY

LYDIA A. WILLIAMS

W

hen horses offered by White Pine Thoroughbreds go through the ring at Fasig-Tipton's Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale next week, it will mark the first auction for Justin Wojczynski's new agency. A Michigan native who did not grow up in a family with a horse connection but frequented local tracks on weekends, Wojczynski has held a variety of positions to expand his level of knowledge to the point where he is comfortable striking out on his own. He gained much of his knowledge working for South Carolina-based horsewoman Cary Frommer, who also has a sizable group on offer at the May 21-22 Fasig-Tipton sale at the Maryland State Fairgrounds near Timonium, Md. The White Pine horses cataloged for the sale are Hip 82, a Malibu Moon colt; Hip 402, a Noble Mission colt; Hip 480, a Central Banker filly; Hip 530, a Twirling Candy filly; and Hip 532, a Kitten's Joy filly. "I'm on my own, officially," Wojczynski said while dodging rainfall in the stable area Wednesday. "It's exciting. It will be full service, including breaking and training and sales. It will be ever-evolving." Wojczynski, who not only has been Frommer's assistant but also had his own horses go through the ring as part of her consignments, decided to use the Midlantic auction as the springboard after it became apparent all the horses he was planning to sell this year were targeted for the Fasig-Tipton sale. "I worked all winter with Cary, and it turned out all my horses were going to be in this sale, so it just worked out, and this will be sort of a soft launch," Wojczynski said, adding it had always been part of the plan for him to go out from under Frommer's wing at some point. Additional motivation came last month from the birth of the first child for Wojczynski and his wife, Gemma Freeman, who reside in Central Kentucky. "It was just a very pleasant parting of the ways," Wojczynski said. "(Working with Frommer) I learned

Justin Wojczynski at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale

to be open, honest, and to tell people the truth and what you think. I've always watched her tell the truth and give an honest opinion and an honest account. There is no smoke and mirrors." In addition to Frommer, Wojczynski has worked with other prominent entities and individuals in the industry, including Lane's End Farm, Pin Oak Stud, Stonestreet Farms, trainer Rusty Arnold, and Florida horseman Ciaran Dunne. "Having no background, I just wanted to learn everything," said Wojczynski, who abandoned initial plans to become a veterinarian out of college. At the suggestion of a professor that he might consider an internship in Kentucky, Wojczynski enrolled in the Kentucky Equine Management program, leading him to Stonestreet. Frommer said Wojczynski assisted her long-time assistant and was a quick study. "He put in a lot of time learning things, and not everybody does that," Frommer said. "He put in the hours. He was conscientious and worked hard. I expect him to do really well with pinhooking and whatever else he decides to do." Frommer said she hopes Wojczynski succeeds in his new venture and returns to Aiken, S.C., in the winter to take some of her horses. "I had 80 horses last year, and I only want to have 25," she said. "He would be an obvious one to give them to." BH

HALL OF FAME TRAINER NICK ZITO JOINS WHOA By BloodHorse Staff

BLOODHORSE DAILY

ANNE M. EBERHARDT

O

n April 25, Travis Tygart, the CEO of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, was invited by the Coalition of Horse Racing Integrity to Keeneland in Lexington, to speak to a group of trainers interested in learning about USADA and its prospective involvement with anti-doping efforts in Thoroughbred racing. During the meeting, there was an open exchange of questions and answers centered around the Horseracing Integrity Act. Some of the trainers in attendance were members of the Water Hay Oats Alliance, some were not. All of them were there to gain a better understanding of the proposed legislation and learn more about the ways it would affect their respective stables and their sport. Among those in attendance was Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito. In the wake of that meeting, Zito recently shared the following comments with WHOA: "Like many of us in the racing industry, I am late to sign up with WHOA. I feel at this time, however, with what I have seen over 40 years as a trainer, that today's medication rules don't add up, and they do not work. "So many states are different in their policies, and the penalties are harsh. In some cases, the penalties are harsh when they shouldn't be, when honest trainers are penalized because of poor testing and rules that are not uniform. "However, with WHOA's position, the help of USADA, and anyone else who feels that this sport and this game is bigger than them, we can find a level playing field. "If you are a Hall of Fame trainer and you are caught taking an edge, if you are a high percent winning trainer and you are caught taking an edge, you should be treated accordingly. "Going to the recent USADA meeting was very encouraging. Travis Tygart made perfect sense; you can't both promote and police, and you can't catch a cheater if you don't test for what they are cheating with. "Some horsemen oppose this legislation because it will result in the prohibition of Lasix. Personally, as far as Lasix goes, I was fortunate to win my first Kentucky Derby with Strike the Gold, and he did not have Lasix when he ran and won, so I have no reason

Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito

not to support this bill. "I give credit to the people who have joined WHOA and are supporting this legislation. I know this isn't going to be fixed overnight. I hope they can start on this soon because, again, this game is bigger than all of us. "Everyone knows about the word 'perception.' Perception is reality. To quote 'The General,' Ted Bassett: There is no alternative." Nick Zito grew up near Aqueduct Racetrack in New York and went to the track with his father at an early age. His first job at the track was as a hotwalker while still a teenager. He moved on to become a groom for trainer Buddy Jacobson and then worked for trainer Bob Lake. He was an assistant to trainer Johnny Campo for four years and to Hall of Famer LeRoy Jolley before going out on his own in 1972 at the age of 24. Through years of hard work and dedication, Zito became a Hall of Fame trainer and a two-time Kentucky Derby (G1) winner. Zito won the Derby in 1991 with Strike the Gold and in 1994 with Go for Gin. He won the 1996 Preakness Stakes (G1) with Louis Quatorze and two editions of the Belmont Stakes (G1) with Birdstone in 2004 and Da' Tara in 2008. Beyond his Triple Crown victories, Zito has won numerous graded stakes in New York, Kentucky, Florida and Pennsylvania. He spends half the year in Saratoga based at the Oklahoma training track and is something of an adopted son of Saratoga Springs. He has a barn at Belmont Park, and his stable heads south to Florida for the winter. He returns to Saratoga via Kentucky, where he participates in the Keeneland and Churchill Downs meets. BH

HARRY ANGEL EXCELS IN DUKE OF YORK SEASON DEBUT By BloodHorse Staff

G

odolphin's champion sprinter Harry Angel made a perfect start to his 4-year-old campaign with a decisive victory in the May 16 Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes (G2) going six furlongs at York. The Clive Cox-trained Dark Angel colt will go next to the June 23 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot. "We know he is good, and we just have to get him there in one piece," Cox said. Successful at the group 1 level in the Darley July Cup and the 32red Sprint Cup Stakes (G1) last year, Harry Angel was quickly into his stride in his first race of 2018. He disputed the early running before being held in second, racing a bit keenly, behind leader Ornate in the field of five. Sir Dancealot made his move approaching the final quarter-mile and took the lead, but Adam Kirby on Harry Angel in third was aware of what was happening and asked his mount to quicken. Harry Angel showed an instant turn of foot and

soon went to the front, opening up a clear advantage. He galloped out strongly to score by two lengths over last season's LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) victor Brando. The final time was 1:10.87 on good to firm turf. "Harry Angel seems more grown up and more mature this year," Cox said. "We have not squeezed him off the bridle at home. "I am thrilled he has taken this first step well. I think all these sprinters need a run to get them back into gear. He had a penalty today, and even though it was a smaller field than usual, I know he will come forward from today. "Mentally, I am so pleased with the way he has conducted himself. Walking across (the course) here is a bigger test than anything he has done before. He has really grown up mentally. "In the early days, it was quite tough to harness his mind. We are reaping the rewards of that patience, and I am really delighted for Sheikh Mohammed keeping him in training." "I was really pleased with Harry Angel," Kirby said. "We knew that he would be a little bit fresh, and he showed his well-being for the first quartermile. When I pulled him and sank into him a bit, he found top gear and finished off strongly. "I think he is definitely improving, and his mind has definitely improved—he is relaxing and doing everything a lot better now. Fair play to Clive Cox, who has done a fantastic job. Not only has he trained the horse, he has trained his mind." BH

GIVE AND TAKE GETS UP LATE TO SCORE IN MUSIDORA By Tom Haywood at Thoroughbred Publishers

icholas Jones' Give And Take outdueled Dancing Brave Bear late to land the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (G3) at York May 16. The race is a key trial for the June 1 Investec Oaks (G1). Held for much of the race by jockey James Doyle, Give And Take produced a challenge in the straight and stayed on well to subdue her main rival by one length. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to third-place finisher Ejtyah. The Musidora was the first group level win for Give And Take, who opened her 3-year-old campaign with a second-place finish in a 1 1/4-mile conditions race at Sandown last month. Bred by her owner's Coln Valley Stud, the winner is by Cityscape out of Grace And Glory, an unraced half sister to multiple group 1 winner Fame And Glory. Final time for the 10 1/2-furlong distance was 2:12.04 on a good to firm track. Six winners have gone on to win at Epsom in the Oaks—most recently Sariska in 2009—but trainer William Haggas was unsure if that would be the plan. "I think we need to think about it," Haggas said. "I'm not convinced, and I never have been convinced, that a mile and a half is her go. Nicholas assures me it's a good staying family, and the one thing she will do is stay, but she has always showed me speed at home—so I'm not convinced. I have her in the Prix Saint-Alary (at ParisLongchamp) next weekend. That's a group 1 over a mile and a quarter. I know it's quite soon, but I'm going to look at that." Previously undefeated Dancing Brave Bear enhanced her reputation in her first turf start with

the runner-up finish. The winner of a pair of minor polytrack contests has a notable pedigree. Dancing Brave Bear is by Street Cry out of the graded stakes winner Baghdaria—a half sister to Preakness Stakes (G1), Metropolitan Handicap (G1), and Clark Handicap (G1) winner Shackleford and Alabama Stakes (G1) winner Lady Joanne. "Dancing Brave Bear has done so little since she ran. She just didn't do well and come forward from it, and it's only in the last couple of weeks she's started to thrive," said trainer Ed Vaughan. "She'd only done a couple of bits of work. She looked a bit green, and the jockey said she could have done with a lead for a bit longer. "She's in the Ribblesdale (at Royal Ascot), and I'd have thought that was the race for her. That's where we'll go next. She's an exciting filly. She's going to continue to improve, and the second half of the year is when we'll see her at her best over a mile and a half." Highgarden was sent off as the favorite to give trainer John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori a fourth consecutive Musidora—despite finishing one place behind Give And Take at Sandown in her last start. But after leading for much of the contest, she was outpaced in the straight and could finish only fourth. BH

ROARING LION HEADS FIELD OF NINE IN DANTE AT YORK

By Tom Haywood at Thoroughbred Publishers

ohn Gosden's Roaring Lion and Crossed Baton head a field of nine 3-year-old colts declared for the May 17 Betfred Dante Stakes (G2) at York. A key trial for the June 2 Investec Derby (G1) run over a distance of 10 1/2 furlongs, the Dante is named after the last Yorkshire-trained horse to win the Epsom showpiece in 1945. Ten Dante winners have gone on to score at Epsom, the most recent being Gosden's own Golden Horn in 2015. Roaring Lion stretches out in distance after finishing fifth in the QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (G1) over a mile at Newmarket last time. The son of Hill 'n' Dale Farm's Kitten's Joy opened his 2018 campaign with a third in the bet365 Craven Stakes (G3) over the same Newmarket track. His juvenile career, which consisted of three wins from four starts, ended with a neck defeat to eventual QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas winner Saxon Warrior in the Racing Post Trophy Stakes (G1) at Doncaster. Roaring Lion is owned by Qatar Racing and will be ridden by Oisin Murphy.

Crossed Baton, owned by Khalid Abdullah and bred by his Juddmonte Farms operation, makes his first start in group company on the back of a score in another Derby trial, the Investec Blue Riband Trial at Epsom last month. Prior to that, the son of Dansili took out a conditions race on Kempton's polytrack to kick off his season. Both of those wins came over 10 furlongs. Frankie Dettori, who landed the race in 2007 with subsequent Epsom hero Authorized, will ride. "Roaring Lion ran a good race in the Two Thousand Guineas, and we've always felt this was more his kind of trip for this year," Gosden said. "We discussed running him in the Dante before the Guineas, and he has come out of that race extremely well. He's fresh, well and in good form at home. "Crossed Baton has done nothing wrong, and the form of his win at Epsom looks fairly decent. He should like the galloping track and stay very well." Mark Johnston saddles Mildenberger for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. The son of Teofilo made a bright start to his classic season when he took out the listed bet365 Feilden Stakes at Newmarket in April. He ended his juvenile year by finishing third to Roaring Lion in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (G2) at the same venue. Jockey James Doyle partners. "All through the winter, we felt if we had one horse who might take us to the big races and big days that Permian (winner of last year's Dante) did, then Mildenberger was top of the list," assistant trainer and son Charlie Johnston said. "We were very pleased with (continued on page 16)

ROARING LION HEADS FIELD OF NINE IN DANTE AT YORK (continued from page 15) him in the Feilden, and the extra furlong he gets here should help him for sure. "We're probably more confident than we were going into the Dante with Permian, but this is Derby D-day," he continued. "We're going to find out if we should be going to Epsom, and hopefully we will be." Coolmore will rely on Aidan O'Brien-trained James Cook, fourth to Crossed Baton at Epsom on return last time, while Godolphin and Charlie Appleby will send Nordic Lights, unraced at 2 and unbeaten in a pair of 1 1/4-mile conditions races this season. Wells Farhh Go, trained by Yorkshire local Tim Easterby, has not been seen since landing the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (G3) over seven furlongs at the track in August. But the runner-up in that race, James Garfield, went on to land a pair of group races before finishing seventh in the Two Thousand Guineas. Wells Farhh Go's connections recently shelled out £9,000 (approximately US$12,000) to supplement the son of Farhh for Epsom's most famous classic. "I'm hoping it won't be a case of £9,000 down the Swanee. If he can get that money back in the Dante, I'll be happy," Easterby said. "I expect him to run very well, and it would be good to see him finish in the first three. However, he really has only just come to himself. He wouldn't have been ready to run three weeks ago. He is a nice big horse with a lot of furnishing to do, but he is eating better now and he looks well." Hugo Palmer's White Mocha finished one place in front of Roaring Lion in the Craven and, like that rival, stretches out for the first time. "Ryan Moore rode him to beat Roaring Lion in the Craven—and he did beat Roaring Lion. He came out of that wonderfully well and should relish the step up in trip at York. We're now going to find out where we are—we will be left with either a Derby dream or a different dream." BH

ARC: INTERNATIONAL LEADERS EMPHASIZE NEED FOR INTEGRITY By BloodHorse Staff

A

(continued on page 18)

ASIAN RACING CONFERENCE

session of the 37th Asian Racing Conference in Seoul tackled the ever-pressing issue of integrity— in racing and sport in general. Kim Nag Soon, chairman and CEO of the Korea Racing Authority, set the tone with his opening remarks: "In our industry, nothing is more important than integrity. If we are to earn and retain the trust of the public, then our sport must not only be clean and fair, but also must be seen to be clean and fair. It is what sets us apart from illegal gambling operators. Going forward, we need to strengthen education of all participants and work across borders with partners, sharing information and intelligence to combat our common foe, and uphold the trust in our racing product." Sport around the world has been accompanied by scandal. Allegations of match fixing, bribery of officials, illegal gambling, doping, and money laundering have tarnished sport for decades, eroding the public's trust. Based on match-fixing case studies from around the world, professor Jack Anderson, director of sports law studies at the University of Melbourne, offered his view on recent integrity issues in the world of sport. "We may think that the threat is external, but the threat is from within," Anderson said. "Insider information is the key integrity threat. It can manipulate betting markets, putting the integrity of the sport—and of the brand—at stake.

Educating jockeys or players is key. There is a demand for information. So how does one stop the supply? You cut off that supply by educating the jockeys or the players." Anderson went on to explain there is no such thing as a victimless crime when it comes to corruption. "Corruption and lack of integrity has a price tag. It costs the sport," he said. "A fix in a race or at the bookies affects every consumer on a micro level. And on a macro level, it leads to transnational economic crime. For criminal syndicates, this is a beautiful outcome." Dealing with match fixing is resource-intensive. Therefore, more and more sports bodies are relying on commercial operators to flag unusual betting patterns. That raises several legal questions, Anderson said, such as what constitutes an irregular pattern, what is the correct ban, and how do you make the punishment proportionate to the crime given courts these days reject life bans? In conclusion, Anderson said, "Nothing corrodes quicker than the whiff of corruption, and therefore

ARC: INTERNATIONAL LEADERS EMPHASIZE NEED FOR INTEGRITY (continued from page 17) integrity needs to be your No. 1 priority." With global racing integrity issues as the main theme of his presentation, Justice Jack Forrest of the Supreme Court of Victoria (Australia) reminded delegates of the ease with which a scandal impacts the sport. "The prosperity of international racing relies on its gambling revenue, and if it is not a level playing field, betting and reputational damage affects all stakeholders," Forrest said. "Stewards need to operate effectively and be seen to be doing so." He specifically addressed the ongoing doping problems in Australian racing. "After the last four years, the public can be forgiven for thinking that cheating and doping is rife in Australian racing," Forrest said. "First we had the cobalt scandal and, more recently, the Aquanita scandal, where 'top ups' of sodium bicarbonate were given to their horses on race days over a number of years." Forrest noted that racing has been effective in creating an integrity infrastructure that has, in general, been successful, while other sports have often lacked such setups. However, he cautioned that the implementation of such programs requires more due diligence than expected.

"There have always been individuals trying to get an edge in racing. The question is how quickly is it detected and how well is it controlled," he said. "The current answer seems to be that perhaps the controls are not sufficient. That raises several other questions. Should integrity be quarantined from the controlling bodies? How tough should drug rules be, and how can we improve hearings?" Forrest believes removing integrity issues from the controlling bodies is unlikely to be effective. "I cannot see that such a split would be effective. The costs of doing so are significant, and invariably this type of stand-alone organization is established and regulated by government. On the toughness of drug rules, there are diverse approaches worldwide. Not all positives require a trainer to be disqualified. There are various situations in which the rules need to be adaptable." Forrest concluded by saying that while the cobalt issue has dragged on for three years and is still not final, the top-up scandal has been dealt with in a matter of months, with bans and penalties following shortly after the verdict. While this is a step in the right direction, he noted, there are still a host of legal issues to resolve. Forrest added that the quality of technology now used in the monitoring of races, and having expert stewards, meant that manipulation of race outcomes was no longer the real challenge, while integrity units in other sports have often lacked such expertise. In his view, performance-enhancing drugs was the central integrity issue for racing. BH

GENDER DIVERSITY KEY TO EXPANDING RACING'S FAN BASE By BloodHorse Staff

COURTESY OF FASIG-TIPTON

T

he second half of the third plenary session of the 37th Asian Racing Conference in Seoul was led by Victoria Carter, deputy chair of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, who opened with a frank discussion on how racing can respond to a rapidly changing world, with the emphasis on staying relevant and driving diversity. "If racing wants to expand its participant base and get more fans, the fastest way is through diversity. More women in racing at all levels, not just on-course, will mean that we have a greater chance of innovation, collaboration, and transformation. If you can't see it, how can you be it or believe that it is possible?" she said. "Having more women in racing shows all women that it is possible. It means you do not need to be unique, exceptional, or chosen, and it becomes more of the norm. Remember, half the world is women. "For racing to gallop ahead, we need women in leadership roles. If you want good decisions, good strategies, and good outcomes, you need people who are different from you. Hence, diversity, or genderbalance, matters. Change will make our industry stronger. There isn't an industry today that doesn't need innovation and new ideas; racing is not alone here," Carter said. "So if we want more women to participate in racing, we need to find a way to get the other 50% involved." Susannah Gill, director of external affairs for Arena Racing Company, provided an insight into British racing's commitment to diversity and inclusion. British racing, with its rich heritage, excellent growth, and leading position in the production of top quality horses, identified a need to realign with modern society, Gill said. This resulted in the formation of the Diversity in Racing Steering Group led by the British Horseracing Authority and included representation from all stakeholder groups. The Group will shortly publish its Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan. "Society still perceives racing to be a 'white rich man's sport,' yet it relies mostly on people who are not white, rich, or men. With racing's administration populated with white middle-aged men, a current

staffing shortage, which will only get worse with Brexit and a gender pay gap, British racing was in trouble. So in short, not only do we need to attract the brightest and the best, but we also need to retain them. Hence, we have got to be seen to be open for business," Gill said. Anna Seitz Ciannello, client development and public relations manager of Fasig-Tipton, briefed delegates on the creation and expansion of female racing syndicates, both in the United States and abroad. With a lifetime of experience in the sport—having grown up at Kentucky's Brookdale Farm, the birthplace of 2012 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! GENDER DIVERSITY KEY TO EXPANDING RACING’S FAN BASE (continued from page 19) "In my job I realized how exciting it was for people to be involved in owning a racehorse. Hence, I put together my first syndicate and bought a filly named I'm Already Sexy. We were not millionaires; we were just a bunch of young people having fun. From there grew the idea of having syndicates for women, where the aim is simply to have fun," she said. Partnering with Elaine Lawlor from Goffs, Seitz Ciannello proceeded to expand her syndicates internationally, with runners in Australia, Ireland, and the U.S. Her Australian syndicate formed in 2013—It's All About the Girls—has subsequently brought several hundred new female owners to the sport. Global Glamour, the syndicate's group 1-winning filly, was offered as a prime example of the international reach of such syndicates, boasting 40 owners from eight countries.

Megumi Ichiyama, chief of staff of the Japan Racing Association publicity department, shared with delegates the strategy of the UMAJO project which commenced in 2012 and is aimed at attracting women to the racecourse. "The project was launched when the JRA realized that less than 14% of all racegoers in Japan were women. Research showed that women not only wanted to race in comfort but also wanted to be provided with information and to be guided on racing when attending as a newcomer," Ichiyama said. This led to the creation of the UMAJO SPOT, an area set up exclusively for women at each of the JRA's racecourses. Here, women are offered concierge services, introductory brochures, refreshments, and even educational tours. The JRA also realized that the horse is a key attraction for women and have used this successfully in their poster campaigns. The project has proved beneficial, with female attendance growing to 17% in 2017. BH

GOLD DIGGER'S BACK-TO-BACK SUCCESS IN THE GALLORETTE By Tom Hall t @lordatwar

P

BLOODHORSE LIBRARY

imlico's Gallorette Stakes (G3T), on the May 19 Preakness Stakes (G1) undercard, honors the grand Maryland-bred handicap mare who was the scourge of both males and females during the 1940s. Champion handicap female in 1946, the chestnut filly won two-thirds of the Handicap Triple Crown that year, the Metropolitan Handicap and the Brooklyn Handicap, defeating males. Some high-powered fillies and mares have worn the Gallorette laurels. In its 66 runnings, two horses have won the race twice, but only one has achieved that feat back-to-back. While Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs' Searching took the 1955 and 1957 editions, 10 years later Mrs. Leslie Combs' Gold Digger won consecutive runnings in 1965-66 before joining the broodmare ranks at Spendthrift Farm, where she would leave an indelible stamp on the breed. Bred by Leslie Combs II and Brownell Combs, Gold Digger was sired by the farm's premier stallion, Nashua, whom Leslie Combs had bought as a 3-yearold through a sealed bid of $1,251,200 to the estate of William Woodward Jr., following his untimely death in 1955. At the conclusion of his racing career, Nashua stood at Spendthrift. Gold Digger's stakes-winning dam, Sequence, had stellar credentials as well. She was a daughter of 1943 Triple Crown winner Count Fleet and Kentucky Oaks winner Miss Dogwood, whose champion dam, Myrtlewood, had done more than enough to establish her own branch of the evergreen Frizette family. Thus, Gold Digger came into the world May 28, 1962, with the burden

of high expectations thrust upon her by her ancestors. The bay filly proceeded to meet those prospects on the racetrack and surpass them in the breeding shed. Gold Digger debuted at 2 in July, breaking her maiden at first blush in a five-furlong Aqueduct maiden special weight by 2 1/2 lengths. She took Saratoga by storm three races later with an eight-length victory in the Lillian Russell Purse at six furlongs. Thrown into stakes competition, she fared not so well in four attempts, her best effort a third in the Matron Stakes at Aqueduct. At 3, Gold Digger fell a half-length shy of emulating Miss Dogwood, finishing second to Amerivan in the Kentucky Oaks. Close but no cigar, Gold Digger had to wait until Sept. 18 to win her first stakes, the nine-furlong Marigold Stakes at Latonia. She quickly followed that victory with one in Hawthorne's 6-1/2 furlong Yo Tambien Stakes. Versatile and hardy, she came into Pimlico's Nov. 20 Gallorette in the 15th start of her sophomore season. Facing a field of 13 other older fillies and mares, Gold Digger, trained by E.J. Reed and ridden by Larry Adams, was stuck in the back of the peloton through the first four of the nine furlongs. Moved to the outside of the pack, she was fourth after six furlongs and by the stretch had moved into the lead, where she stretched her 1 1/2-length advantage to 2 1/2 at the wire. By the following year, Pimlico had moved the Gallorette to May. Despite the change of season, the song remained the same, and Gold Digger delivered a one-length verdict. Gold Digger retired with 10 wins (five in stakes) from 35 starts in three years of racing and $127,255 in earnings. To the cover of Raise a Native, Gold Digger foaled Mr. Prospector. BH
