Macomb County 4-H Horse Program Committee Meeting Meeting Minutes April 24, 2017 Call meeting to order at 6:40 pm by Youth President, Elizabeth Barone. Pledges Secretary’s Report: presented by Michelle Porter. Motion to accept Secretary’s report as corrected by Rod Porter, seconded by Amy McSwain; motion carried. Note to previous minutes: Seth Martin asked that the apology be removed from Round Table in the February 27, 2017 minutes & sent to MSUE for posting to the website & distribution to leaders. Treasurer’s Report: presented by Kathy DeFour. Current balance is $3,387.98. Expenses this month have been $2507.07 for ribbons. Motion to accept the Treasurer’s report as read by Tom Ahern, seconded by Rod Porter; motion carried. Additions/Corrections to the Agenda: New Business Armada Fair Trophies (Rod) Horses available (Rod) Mini Show (Lesa) Huron-Clinton Metro Parks Auction (Faye) Old Business  2017 Ad Book – Due Monday, May 1. Seth to include in the MSUE May email Family Newsletter. Please send any ads that were not printed in 2016 to Tom at [email protected] as soon as possible for inclusion in the 2017 book at no additional cost to the buyer.  Metro Parks Waiver/Registration o 4 clubs submitted paperwork already. o May 2-10 $20 late fee for registrations. o If Coggins is still being processed, include 2016 Coggins with a note.  Camp Rotary Clean Up Date – May 6 at 9:00 am o Please bring brooms, hammers, saws o Donation received: 1 board to repair ring 2 from the wind storm & clips to secure gates from Pirates 4-H Club – THANK YOU! o Goal: Paint the pattern board, metal road sign. o Seth Martin verified with Metro Parks the July date for Boy Scouts (it isn’t in conflict with the last Mini/Draft show date on July 8). o Action Item: Steven Prokuda needs to create artwork for road sign for approval by Metro Parks before repainting.  Horse Show Work Schedule o Still need Ring Stewards!

Need some ribbon shifts covered. Tom is announcing Mini/Draft shows (but on-call for his job).

New Business  Armada Fair 2017 Individual Projects (relative to 4-H State Horse Show for lights) o Projects may be entered in Open departments & classes OR o Projects may be placed & displayed in Exhibit Barn (without judging) o Cannot be turned in on Aug 13 by another youth; must be submitted by Exhibitor  Armada Fair trophies – the Klusendorf & Curious George trophies are being changed this year to a large wall plaque to be displayed in an enclosed trophy case in front of the Horse Office in the Horse Barn. The name plaques from the current traveling trophies have already been removed & preserved on the new wall plaque. There will still be a traveling trophy for each award to be presented to the annual winner at the Armada Fair. o Confirmed: the history of each award will remain attached to the bottom of the traveling trophies to remember the origin of the awards, as well as on the display in the Horse Barn.  Horses Available – Three animals available from a community member who recently passed away: thoroughbred (17 yrs), fullsize donkey (15-16 yrs), and miniature horse (15 yrs, some health issues requiring daily medication). Miniature Horse Show – Blue Water Miniature Horse Club is hosting a Double Crown Open Miniature Horse Show on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Wolcott Farms at 8:30 am. Showbill can be found online: http://www.bwmhc.org/2017-june-4th-club-show.html. If you attend, please make sure to trailer through the Employee Entrance, not the park main gate.

 

Beyond the Seed is hosting a flower sale on May 13 from 10-4 at Wolcott Farms Huron-Clinton Metro Parks Auction is scheduled May 6 at 10:00 am. Viewing begins at 8:00 am.

Committees – Report Out  Ad Book  Observation Ride o 1 ride remaining on Wed, 1 ride on Thurs (both private rides) o Miniature horses will be measured (“sticked”) at first show on June 3  Patterns – all patterns will be posted to the MSUE County 4-H Horse website, as well as distributed with these meeting minutes to horse leaders as soon as possible. o Draft In Hand Trail o Draft Ground Driving Obstacle o Light Horse Trail W-T-C o Light Horse Trail W-T    

MSU Extension  Seth gave Mike a list of programs from MSU main campus. Staff suggest a minimum of 60 minutes in length to justify the cost & travel from East Lansing to Ray Twp. Target Sep or Oct meeting to allow time to advertise & invite youth & parents for 2017-2018 programming year. o Communication o Conflict Resolution o Leadership o Youth Facilitation Skills o Team Building / Personality Types  MSUE Staff will be attending a spring conference Wed; Roberta will be the only one in the office in Clinton Twp. 

Paper Clover campaign at TSC (New Baltimore & Washington stores) runs April 26 – May 7 o TSC will offer 10% off Family Farm & Home’s pricing for same items Watch for a flier for a regional target archery tournament in May Family Newsletter o Taking place on May 21 at Springfield Oaks County Park (Oakland County) o Looking for volunteers for this event



Round Table – Open Discussion  Midnite Riders growing strawberries hydroponically if any clubs want to learn more or visit their Beyond the Seed greenhouse at Wolcott Farms  Clinton Valley now has a beehive (honey production)  Clinton Valley has participated in new technology with Florida 4-H o Skype meetings o Agendas presented as QR codes o Recommend a Communications Officer for clubs to focus on email, social media, etc.  Tom Ahern has access to a large number of laptops if any clubs are interested in attaining one for their club.  Tom Ahern has a contact with Vinkier Foods in Armada; they purchase produce locally if any families or clubs are growing large amounts of local produce this season.  Question was raised about the necessity of a May meeting. It was unanimously agreed that there is no business need for a May meeting. Motion to adjourn the meeting by Rod Porter, seconded by Tom Ahern; motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:35 pm.
