MADISON EAST HIGH SCHOOL Respectful—Ready—Responsible

August / September 2017 Dear Parents/Guardians: We are looking forward to welcoming your child back for a new school year. Hopefully, you are enjoying time together during these last, beautiful summer days. I would like to offer a special welcome to our incoming 9th graders and parents. The faculty and staff will do their very best to ease their transition from our feeder schools and make every 9th grader feel welcome and at home. I know I say this every year, but this time of year is really special to me. I love seeing store displays of school supplies and I feel excited to think of all the new possibilities and challenges a new school year brings. It is not only the knowledge that will be gained; it is the new friendships that will be made and the personal growth every student will experience. The high school years are developmentally important in so many ways. Sometimes the path to personal growth becomes rocky and obscure. It’s important that our teens understand that we are here to support them, and to help them set goals and make the kinds of choices that will lead them to achieve those goals. It is a good time for parents to set new goals as well. It is more important than ever to be engaged in your student’s academic and social life as they begin the transition to adulthood. At East High School, we make it easy for you to help your student track academic progress and stay on top of assignments through Infinite Campus. I hope all our families set a goal to make a weekly check of their student’s academic progress and to express ongoing interest in their student’s expectations and experiences during the important high school years. Another way parents can be engaged is to volunteer with the various opportunities throughout the school year. These opportunities will be shared in our weekly newsletter, but if you have a special talent or interest you’d like to share please don’t hesitate to contact a staff member to see if there is an avenue for you to participate. There is a great deal of important information in this back-to-school edition of our newsletter. Please read it carefully! One important thing to note is that we are transitioning into the Neighborhood system with our Student Support team as well as with our Administration staff. The Neighborhood system will begin with our 10th grade students and follow through their 12th grade year. We will continue the Freshman Academy model. Finally, I want to thank all our families for choosing East High School. We have a remarkable school culture that is based on trust and respect: where diversity is cherished and celebrated, and where students will embark on a process of self-discovery and learning in a safe and welcoming environment. As always, I want to thank you all for allowing me to work with each of your children. This is a responsibility that is both humbling and exciting. I look forward to seeing you all at registration. Respectfully, Michael Hernandez 1|Page

EAST HIGH NEWSLETTER—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017

East High School Enrollment Online enrollment access begins on August 1st New to MMSD: Friday, August 11th: 12pm—5:30pm All Grades: Tuesday, August 15th: 11am—6:30pm All Grades: Friday, August 18th: 7:30am—1pm Online Enrollment: What do I need to do before I come to Enrollment Day? Completing the online enrollment process before you come to East will help ensure you are prepared when you arrive and make this process go as smoothly as possible. The Infinite Campus portal will open on August 1, 2017 for you to begin the online enrollment—everyone must complete the online enrollment. The Madison Metropolitan School District offers internet access and assistance in completing the online portion of student enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year. Click here for a list of the Enrollment Assistance Sites. If you do not know your Infinite Campus username and password, log in to: mmsd.org/lostpassword to fill out a form to receive an email with your username and/or password. A response will be sent to you within 24 hours. Onsite Enrollment: Who should come to East on August 11th? NEW STUDENTS = New students enrolling for the first time from a district other than Madison. Be sure to complete the online enrollment, print the signature page and bring your verification documents to room 2031 at East High on August 11th between 12pm—5:30pm. Onsite Enrollment: Who should come to East on August 15th or 18th? All grades: 9th—12th grade students. This includes new freshmen who attended Black Hawk, O’Keeffe & Sherman Middle Schools, and returning 10th—12th grade students. It’s extremely important for incoming freshmen (from Black Hawk, Sherman and O’Keeffe) and returning 10th— 12th grade students to enroll on the scheduled dates—this is when our principals, counselors, nurse, food service, bilingual and secretarial staff will be available to assist you. This is also when LifeTouch will be taking ID photos. Please keep in mind the enrollment process will generally take about 30 minutes, but may be longer. Arriving at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled end time will help ensure you will have enough time to visit all the areas and people that you need to see.

Parents & Guardians—let’s get started! From a computer, complete the following: 1

ONLINE ENROLLMENT Log in to http://www.mmsd.org/enroll and complete the online enrollment.

Do I need to print anything? Not unless you have a new address, or your child’s date of birth or your current address have not yet been verified or you are a new student to MMSD. If this applies to you, the online application will prompt you to print a verification form to bring to school for enrollment completion. 2

FEES To expedite the process of enrollment, pay fees online beginning August 1, 2017. For the first two weeks in August, the $3 transaction fee will be waived. Fees may also be paid during enrollment via cash or check. A list of fees is located on page 7 of this newsletter. 3

FEE WAIVERS The fee waiver request is included in the online enrollment process. Your request will be reviewed by the building principal or authorized school district personnel at a later date. (There is a separate fee waiver form for athletics participation which is available in the athletic office, room 1030.) MEALS PROGRAM—ALL FAMILIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY ONLINE! We are encouraging all families to apply for the meals program while completing the online enrollment. Why? Because some additional State funding for East is based on the number of families who complete the application—not the number that qualify. So even if you don’t qualify, we ask that you complete the online application at https://foodsvcweb.madison.k12.wi.us/ 4

10th – 12th Grade Neighborhoods: Olbrich – Susan Harris, 204-1638 [email protected] Warner – Emily Nevel, 204-1614 [email protected] Yahara – Emily Nevel, 204-1614 [email protected] TELEPHONE CALLS TO CLASSROOMS If your son/daughter or a teacher calls you from a classroom telephone during the school day and you call that phone number back, your call gets directed to an office phone—It will not ring directly to the classroom phone. Our phone system is not set up to allow outside calls to ring directly to classrooms during the school day. Since calls from classrooms are generally not an emergency, if you provide our office staff person with the phone number you dialed, they will transfer your call to the classroom voice mail. TELEPHONE CALLS OR MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS Parents, we ask for your assistance by confining these requests to EMERGENCY situations only. When a parent calls to leave a message for a student, office staff must interrupt the teacher and other students in the class to deliver the message. This procedure is very disruptive to the classroom learning process. Proper planning and communication would be greatly appreciated. PERMISSION TO LEAVE SCHOOL Following these procedures would be appreciated: Early release for medical appointments: Parents should contact the appropriate Neighborhood or send a note with their child the day of, or before the absence, when possible. Students then go to their Neighborhood office to pick up a blue pass excusing them from class early. Students coming in late should have been called in or have a note from a parent, doctor, or dentist to provide to their Neighborhood office. Parents, remember that students may not leave school without a pass from their Neighborhood office. If your student has an appointment, he or she must check out and check back in to their Neighborhood office. If your student is ill, he or she MUST go to the nurses’ office. Proper parent notification and check out will happen at that time. Students who leave school without a pass will be marked unexcused. REQUESTS for HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS may be done by accessing the listing of all staff on the East website and e-mailing your student’s teachers directly. Contact the Neighborhood office if you have any questions.

COMMUNICATION AT EAST EAST WEBSITE Check out school information on the East website at https://east.madison.k12.wi.us/ For other information on school activities, click on the Events Calendar TVs There are a number of flat screen televisions mounted throughout the school that are used to relay information. EAST HIGH NEWSLETTER—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017

MATH CYNTHIA CHIN Welcome back, students! We are looking forward to providing you with many intriguing, challenging, and successful experiences in mathematics. Thank you for bringing your excitement about the new year to the classroom! CALCULATORS: In order to learn and apply the mathematics covered in most classes at East, students will be required to use a graphing calculator. (Geometry courses are the only exception.) This is a versatile tool and a worthwhile investment. Students often find it to be helpful in science classes and are also expected to be familiar with this technology when taking standardized state exams, the SAT or ACT, and Advanced Placement examinations. A calculator from an older relative or friend can certainly be used again, but sharing is difficult because the calculator is used on a daily basis in class and at home. The specific models recommended are all made by Texas Instruments: TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, TI-84+, and TI-84 +C (color edition) (“Silver” and “NSpire” editions have higher computing speeds and more memory, but are not required.) Please be aware that other models may not be supported in class. We understand that this is an expensive purchase. East High School offers a calculator rental option to families in need of assistance. The rental fee is $15 for the entire school year. Payment plans are offered in cases where rental fees present a hardship. A copy of the rental agreement will be available at registration, in the event that you wish to take advantage of this program. Completing the form and making the rental payment at that time will ensure that your student obtains a calculator during the first two weeks of the school year. About purchasing calculators: --Watch for sales—you should not pay more than $90 for a TI-83 or more than $120 for a TI-84+. The Color screen and NSpire editions can more expensive. Families can decide if the color enhancement, rechargeable batteries, or Computer Algebra Systems are worth the increased price, but they are not required for classes at East. Some retailers offer significant discounts at their online addresses. --Make sure your name is permanently marked on your calculator and that you write down the serial number from the back, in case of loss or theft. PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT! DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CALCULATOR UNATTENDED, EVEN IN A CLASSROOM! --IF you are in a position to donate a new / used calculator, or replacement batteries, to the school rental program, your gift would be VERY much appreciated. Donations should be directed to the math department chair, Ms. Brown. (204-1603 x 41531 or [email protected] ) The return of any stray calculators from last year would also be good for us—please check backpacks and around the home again if you were una- ble to return a calculator on time in June. We look forward to working with students (and their calculators) in class. Please contact a member of the math faculty if you have additional questions. TUTORING & TA’s: One-to-one help in the classroom, during study hall, or after school, can really make a difference. Students and parents are strongly encouraged to take advantage of tutoring resources immediately in the fall, before serious academic difficulties arise. Achievement Connections will be ready on Day One to assist eligible students in Algebra 1 via one-to-one matches with tutors 2-3 times per week. Criteria for admission include 85% or better attendance and mathematics teacher recommendation. Geometry students (including Algebra “graduates” of last year’s program) should make their interest known right away but should understand that they will be considered only after as many eligible Algebra 1 students as possible are given the opportunity to accept or decline services. MSCR Homework Club is open to ALL students daily afterschool and provides one-on-one or small group assistance to students in all core academic subject areas.

EAST HIGH NEWSLETTER—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017 STAFF UPDATES: Thank you to Mr. Joshua Jawitz-McClellan and Mr. Thomas Clegg for their work with East Algebra students and for advising the math club last year. They will be working at other schools for 2017-2018—Mr. JawitzMcClellan at Memorial HS and Mr. Clegg out of state. Welcome to Ms. Rachel DeJongh, who joins the East Algebra2/Trigonometry team this fall. DO YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR EAST MATH? Community members who can assist East students at any level of mathematics are welcome as volunteers. ---To assist a student one-on-one in algebra or geometry, use the Achievement Connections direct email [email protected] -- Contact Cynthia Chin 204-1603 x 41534 [email protected] to inquire about volunteer placements in the classroom or assisting students with advanced coursework. ---East juniors and seniors who tutor during a free period can razzle-dazzle their prospective colleges, not to mention learn a lot about mathematics and the career of teaching, with a one-semester daily commitment as a Mathematics Teaching Assistant. Earn either Service E credit as a volunteer or elective credit towards graduation. See your counselor to sign up for this independent study option. If you don’t have a specific teacher’s class in mind, ask Ms. Brown or Ms. Chin about classes with anticipated need. --Note: Volunteer opportunities in mathematics AND in other subject areas can be viewed on the school website and at www.volunteeryourtime.org . Listings will be updated in September for the 2017-18 academic year. Find: Opportunity Search by: Agency Agency: Madison East High School MATH CLUB: Watch for announcements about meetings. We will be very busy with math competitions and fundraisers to support the calculator rental fund. YOU can become part of this East tradition. New members are welcome at all grade levels. ENGINEERING CLUB: Along with its UW affiliates -- National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Engineers Without Borders-- the East Engineering club welcomes students of all backgrounds to explore engineering as a career path or just as something fun to try. We enter competitions, support each other academically, and conduct science outreach programs at middle and elementary schools in the East attendance area. We hope to attend a showing of the engineering IMAX film “Dream Big” this fall (http://www.dreambigfilm.com/), either locally or in conjunction with a visit to industry sites in Milwaukee. Outreach work this year will focus on Robotics, Programming, and Biological Systems Engineering. The latter will be new experience for us, connected with the World Food Prize organization and mentoring from the UW-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Watch for announcements about early events in September/October! Contact Ms. Chin, or any club member for information about joining us. FIRST TECH CHALLENGE: Arrangements are being made for our robot team (created last year) to get an early start on its second year of competition. Interested students should provide their names and contact information as soon as possible to Engineering Club president Liam Braddock. [email protected] MATH MODELING TEAM: Students interested in applying mathematical thinking and tools to complex, open-ended societal, economic, or scientific problems are invited to check out East’s Mathematical Modeling Team. Creative thinking and technical writing skill are keys to success in this form of competition, and you will improve in these areas if you give the team a try. Look here for problems from previous years. http://www.comap.com/highschool/contests/ and http://m3challenge.siam.org/problem/ Team preparations begin in late September for contests in November and February. We will also be investigating year-round affiliation with the recently created Association of Computational and Mathematical Modeling [AoCMM.org] Math teachers will announce how to sign up. If you’d like an early start experimenting with some open source modeling software, send your contact information to Ms. Chin. [email protected] (Continued on next page)

EAST HIGH NEWSLETTER—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017 The WOMEN IN STEM group began meeting weekly at the end of last year to provide young women at East a regular forum for career exploration, collaborative activities, and guest presentations by professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Watch for announcements as to time and place in the coming school year. See Mr. Arnold for more information about the goals and activities of the club. OPPORTUNITIES AT UW-MADISON: A non-competitive program for high school women, Girls’ Math Night Out offers a one-semester series of weekly meetings for discussion of science careers with female faculty and graduate students, plus a guided research experience in mathematics. Investigations range from intriguing puzzles to cutting-edge applications and are selected to fit the background of each participant; students at ALL levels of experience are eligible to apply. For current program information, contact Prof. Tullia Dymarz [email protected] or visit. https://www.math.wisc.edu/wimm Any student, grades 7-12, who has completed or is enrolled in Algebra 1 may attend the early evening Math Circle Talks sponsored by the UW-Madison Mathematics Department. Parents and guardians are also welcome. Past subjects have included coin flipping, taffy making, secret codes from WWII, and origami. There is almost always a game, puzzle, or hands-on activity involved. Visit the department’s math Wiki for the 2017-2018 schedule. https://www.math.wisc.edu/wiki/index.php/Madison_Math_Circle There will likely be one or two “matinee” presentations from the Math Circle scheduled for Monday afternoons at East during the fall semester -- watch for announcements at school.

SOCIAL STUDIES KEVIN ATTAWAY, DEPARTMENT CHAIR Hello, and welcome to a new school year at Eastside High School. As we begin anew, the Social Studies staff would like to notify you of a few matters. First, we would like to remind you that all seniors will need to take the statewide civics exam in order to graduate. Those seniors who have individualized educational plans (IEPs) need only to take the exam—passing it is optional. (Those whose IEPs have an exception written into them do not have to take it.) All other seniors will need to pass the exam with a sixty-percent score or higher. Those whose first language is not English may take it in their native language. The civics exam is the citizenship test that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency draws from to determine who may become a naturalized United States citizen. It is made up of 100 multiple-choice questions, and will be delivered again in our Modern U.S. History classes (which juniors take) throughout this school year. It may be taken as many times as necessary until a student passes it. There will be at least two make-up sessions, one each semester, for anyone (junior or senior) who did not pass it in their class session. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask your social studies teacher. It may seem early (okay, it is way too early) to start thinking about registering for classes in the 2018-19 school year, but we would encourage you to start thinking about taking some of our elective courses in the Social Studies department. We offer a wide range of subjects in our discipline, from civics to history to socio-economics to social justice. Our core history classes (U.S. History, World History, and Modern U.S. History) are complemented with our Honors courses as well. Our electives include Arts and Ideas, Women’s Studies, Ethnic Studies, Human Social Behavior, Latin American Studies, African Studies, Intro to Economics, Sociology, U.S. Government and Politics, and U.S. and the World. We also offer Advanced Placement courses in Psychology, European History, U.S. Government, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics. We are also sad to say goodbye to our colleague and friend, Ms. Mallory Saurer. Ms. Saurer was a valued member of our Freshmen Academy team who is leaving to pursue further interests. She will be replaced by Mr. Cesar Martinez, who comes to East from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who will be teaching U.S. history and World history classes. Please welcome when you see him. Finally, we urge to you do the best you can do in your classes. We welcome the opportunity to help you if you need any help, whether it is on a project, a lesson, or preparation for a test. Each of us in the Social Studies department have different responsibilities outside of the regular school day, so if you require assistance, please check with your teacher to see when she or he is available. Good luck with your classes and we hope you have a great deal of success this school year!

EAST HIGH NEWSLETTER—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017

STUDENT SERVICES MAGGIE ZYWICKI, INTERIM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Dear East Side Community, I am excited and honored to have been chosen as the Interim Assistant Principal at East High School for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. During the past two years as Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) Coach and Restorative Justice Coordinator at East, I have learned that this school community is rich in diversity, experiences, knowledge, and passion for supporting our students. Before coming to East I served as PBIS Coach and School Social Worker in two MMSD middle schools. My time at East has taught me that our students are incredibly focused on celebrating the diverse backgrounds they bring to the school community, and are committed to making our school and larger community better. My shared values and experiences working with the dedicated teachers and support staff has quickly made East feel like home. I look forward to working together to highlight these core beliefs in ways that provide opportunities for all students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to graduate college and career ready. My leadership style is collaborative, student centered, and intensely focused on ensuring that all students feel safe, connected, and successful. As a parent myself, I take this leadership role extremely seriously and know that in order to create the very best learning environment for students we need to work as partners. For this reason, my door will always be open to families to celebrate successes, to problem solve around concerns, and to support our young people together. I look forward to meeting you soon and know that East students, staff, and families will do great things this year. Thankful to be a Purgolder, Maggie Zywicki Interim Assistant Principal 608.204.1557 [email protected]

EAST HIGH NEWSLETTER—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017 Greetings, East High families, from YOUR East Booster Club! We are looking forward to another exciting year of supporting East High and its athletic teams, and welcome (or: encourage and need!) all East families, staff, and alumni to join our efforts this year. In spite of our name, the East Boosters aren’t really a club—we have no membership fee or attendance requirements—but ARE a strong community of East fans (mostly parents) who want to support our school’s wonderful programs and students, primarily by raising funds but also through a variety of roll- up-our-sleeves, work-together efforts. Participating in Booster activities is also a great way to meet other East parents and have more fun than you thought was possible at school-based events! Here are some ways to learn about the Boosters and support our efforts this year: >Buy an Adult or Youth Athletic Pass. The Single Adult Pass costs $30, while the Double Adult Pass costs $50. New for this year, our Youth Pass is for Kindergarten-8th grade youth, and costs $15. The passes allow entrance into all East home athletic events that charge a fee, excluding post-season matches. A portion of the fees from these passes supports the Booster Club’s efforts to purchase equipment for our teams, whereas admission fees paid at the events go to the School District general fund. Check out our new on-line purchase form ([email protected]) or buy a pass at the East Registration Days. >Stop by the Booster Booth at the East Registration Days on Tuesday, 8/15, and Friday, 8/18. EAST HIGH NEWSLETTER—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017

VOLUNTEER & COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS Service and volunteerism seeks to enrich the lives of others through dedicating one’s own time to make a difference. The willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind is a quality that is essential to the growth of an individual. The purpose of service does not exist to only satisfy a requirement, but to genuinely help others. As students volunteer throughout the summer and school year, they should track their hours each time they volunteer. Please visit https://east.madison.k12.wi.us/service-e to access a Community Service Hours Tracking Form. All students are responsible for documenting their specific work and community service hours.

“The Best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ~Mahatma Gandhi

SERVICE ‘ E ’ RECOGNITION AWARD High School’s Service ‘E’ Award is the oldest, nonacademic award granted to students who have demonstrated volunteerism and service to others without financial or academic compensation. Certificates are awarded based on the total number of accumulated hours beginning the summer prior to freshmen year.

In order to receive the Service ‘E’ Recognition Award, students must submit their service hours using the online form found on the East High School website (this includes Independent Study hours). Students who do not submit hours through this form will not receive recognition. Please stop in the main office with questions

Seniors who have accumulated 100 hours or more will receive the Service ‘E’ Pin.

EAST HIGH NEWSLETTER—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2017

P A R E N T P O R T A L The Parent Portal is a confidential and secure website where you can get current information about your child's school attendance and grades. Do you use the Portal? Have you established access to this information? If not, here’s why you should and how you can get access. NOTE: You can sign up for Infinite Campus in person in Room 1023 (The Freshman Office) at East High School and must show a valid driver’s license or state ID. If you have questions or issues after the initial set-up, we can verify your identity over the phone and assist with issues. What is Infinite Campus? Today, all K-12 school districts use some sort of database system for managing student information and maintaining their records. Infinite Campus is a district-wide student information system designed to manage attendance, grades, schedules, test scores, and other information about the students in the MMSD. In 2007-08, Infinite Campus replaced another system the MMSD had used since the late 1980's. What is the Infinite Campus Parent Portal? The Parent Portal is a confidential and secure website where parents and guardians can get current information about their child's school attendance and grades. What information is included in the Portal? What do I use it for? When you, as a parent or guardian, log-in, you have access to information about all of the students for which you are associated. Class schedules, assignments and grades can be viewed. E-mail hyperlinks facilitate communication with classroom teachers. In addition, schools post important information on the home page, such as events, notices, etc. Attendance information is also available. The Parent Portal allows report cards to be viewed online and printed. Through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, MMSD provides an online communication tool which can help you as a parent or guardian stay current with your student's progress. From an Internet connection at home, the workplace or any public library, you can view up-to-date information about your student's attendance and grades. How do I first use the Infinite Campus Parent Portal? You must set up a user account in order to use the Portal. Your child's school provides you with a Parent Portal activation code. By using this code and following the instructions in the Parent Portal User Setup Guide, you can setup your own user account for the Parent Portal. The Infinite Campus Parent Portal is located at: http://infosvcweb.madison.k12.wi.us/ic/entry_public. We recommend you "bookmark" this location after you get your account enabled. After you go through the process of creating your user name and password, write them down and keep them in a place where you can refer to them at a later date. The user name and password will allow you to see student information, but only for those children for whom you are a parent or guardian. Download the Infinite Campus mobile app to your iPhone or iPad and have mobile access. View the tutorial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjW6rloXrIs. Once the app is downloaded, enter our District URL hbtvtv. If you have questions, contact Jessica Penning at 204-1613 or [email protected].
