Make your own chopsticks Put your newly acquired knife knowhow to the test with this task Suitable for Scouts and Explorers Celebrate the Jamboree in Japan this summer by creating some of your very own chopsticks. Not only is this a great skill to master so you’re never stuck without utensils on camp, but they can also be sold to help with fundraising for future camps and trips. When using a knife it is vital that you understand knife safety. Take out and fold in sharp tools with care and only carry a knife with you when you have reasonable cause to do so. Please refer to the complete guidance at scouts.org.uk/victorinox.

great outdoors. Together, Victorinox and The Scout Association share a commitment to ensure that young people have the information and guidance available to be able to use, maintain and care for a Swiss Army Knife. Scouts will have the opportunity to learn responsible ownership of this outdoor kit. Victorinox is thrilled to sponsor the Scout Survival Skills Badge, supporting a range of activities to help leaders deliver this area of the programme safely.

Rosie Storarr, Youth Programme Manager at The Scout Association, says, ‘Scouting has led the way in activities and adventure for over 100 years now, with pocket knives being synonymous with Scouting skills right from the start. We’re passionate about working with organisations that share our ethos around discovering the outdoors in a safe way, which is why we are particularly excited to launch this brand-new partnership with Victorinox.’ February/March 2015

Using the small knife blade, trim off any small bits of twig. Use the saw on your pen knife to remove rough ends and make them the same length. Trim with scissors if necessary. Shave off 2mm all the way round one end, away from the body, angling the blade slightly and using your thumb to do a controlled cut. Repeat on the other twig.

You will need

• A suitable knife, such as a Victorinox Ranger • S traight lengths of hazel (or other nontoxic wood) about the width of a pencil

At the other end, score through the bark all the way around about 3cm from the end. Do this by carefully turning the length and scoring the bark as you go. Once done, carefully shave off the bark from the score to the end using a shallow cut to remove bark but minimise wood removal. Try to get it as level as possible both in depth and length. You can also place the blade at 90˚ to the bark and carefully scrape backwards and forwards to remove the bark. The bark needs removing because it can taint food and harbour dirt and bacteria. Halfway down the shaved area take some slices of wood off, again at a slight angle, to thin the end slightly, then shave off 2mm from the end like before. Repeat with the other length.
