Making Headlines! The Arc San Diego Foundation held its 14th Annual Meeting & Recognition Luncheon on June 26, 2013 at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. Each year, the Foundation celebrates and honors people and businesses who have committed significant resources to assist in the continued success of The Arc of San Diego. The Circle of Light Bronze Award, recognizing supporters who contribute $25,000-$100,000, was presented to San Diego County Supervisors Greg Cox and Ron Roberts. Through the San Diego Neighborhood Reinvestment Program, Supervisors Cox and Roberts awarded grants to benefit The Arc of San Diego. This support funded capital needs at the Sulpizio Family Center including furniture and equipment for classrooms and computer labs. Additionally, they provided funds for a new passenger van that meets the transportation needs of consumers employed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Food Services Program. Circle of Light members were acknowledged for contributions exceeding $1,000 and presented with a gift of consumer art. A highlight of the Recognition Luncheon was a special video tribute to longtime supporter and Foundation Board Member, Ron Blair, first recipient of the prestigious Cherrie Sevick Lifetime Achievement Award. Chairman Jim Reynolds spoke of Ron’s 30-year involvement, his generous spirit, outstanding leadership, and lifetime contributions to The Arc of San Diego and Arc San Diego Foundation. To recognize Ron Blair’s extraordinary service and role in shaping The Arc, the Foundation Future Needs Fund was renamed the Ron Blair Future Needs Fund with an immediate $25,000 contribution to the Fund. Following the presentation of awards, the new slate of officers and directors for 2013‑14 were installed. To see a news clip from the Annual Meeting & Recognition Luncheon, visit our YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/ arcsandiego.

A Nice Guy! Ron Blair began his relationship with The Arc of San Diego in 1979 when business partner and friend, Joe Swedelius, who had a son with a disability, asked for his help in raising funds to support The Arc of San Diego. In board leadership roles since 1981 at The Arc of San Diego’s Board of Directors (Chair, 1987-89) and Board of Trustees (Vice-Chair, 1983-94), as well as Arc San Diego Foundation (Chair, 1996-2000), he has provided expertise, perspective, and guidance. In 1992, Ron was instrumental in creating the Arc San Diego Foundation and helped increase philanthropic support and steward private gifts to the Foundation. A decade later, the Foundation honored him as the first recipient of the Circle of Light Platinum Award for his efforts in raising more than $1,000,000 for The Arc of San Diego. At The Arc of San Diego, we applaud Ron Blair’s personal loyalty and unbridled enthusiasm for our work. He is a member of the Arc San Diego Foundation Board of Directors and The Arc of San Diego Legacy Society.

President’s

Message

The Arc of San Diego has a long tradition of outstanding volunteers who have generously given their time, energy, and resources. Through service on our boards, committees, auxiliaries, and parent groups; volunteers help with special events, camp, recreational activities, specialty classes; and hands-on projects at our facilities. We are grateful for hundreds of hours of service volunteers provide to support our agency. It is with great respect that I offer my sincerest thanks to everyone for their tremendous talents and unselfish dedication. We continue to depend on you into the future to build a stronger organization. Every year, since 1964, The Arc has provided consumers with an unforgettable summer experience - Camp! Many of our consumers will not have the opportunity to participate in this joyous summer ritual because the state has eliminated all funding for camp programs. Can I ask you, once again, for your support...Would you please consider sponsoring a child or adult to enjoy a week at our Camp-A-Little/Camp-ALot program? Even a small gift can be a big help in funding activities such as arts and crafts workshops, purchasing supplies and athletic equipment, or providing transportation to and from camp. As always, we thank you for your valued support. Have a safe and happy summer!

David W. Schneider

William “Bill” Chase was one of the original teens attending Starlight Center or the Teenage Recreation Program as it was known. He worked for many years in the Starlight workshop before transitioning to Arc’s Community Employment Services Program. On retiring, Bill returned to Starlight Center. Bill truly enjoyed coming each day and always had the most positive attitude. In 2011, Bill was named Consumer of the Year for his outstanding performance and exceptional commitment to The Arc of San Diego. He was also a member of the Starlight Photography Club and took many wonderful photos. A joy to be around, Bill lived life to the fullest. He is survived by his brothers, Palmer and Robert and sisters-in-law, Madie and Sharon.

Harland Millard DeBoer, Jr., Ph.D. February 8, 1926 - April 24, 2013 Dr. DeBoer, a warm and friendly gentleman, began volunteering at The Arc in 1991. He was a member of the North County Chapter Advisory Board, The Arc of San Diego Board of Directors, and Arc San Diego Foundation. Harland served a three-year term as Chair of The Arc of San Diego Board, bringing strategy and leadership skills from his experience as Superintendent with ARAMCO Schools in Saudi Arabia. He was responsible for initiating many pieces of legislation affecting special education programs and we appreciate his service and contributions. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, four children, seven grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

Lee Furstman December 4, 1953 - February 11, 2013 Lee Furstman came to Rex Industries in May 1976, working for almost 29 years before transferring to Arc North County’s Day Program. Lee was a happy person who loved to entertain, sing, and dress up as Elvis at Halloween. He was known for his spot-on impersonations of Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, and Jimmy Durante. We remember his big smile, hearty laughter, and keen sense of humor. Lee enjoyed going to garage sales with his sister and vacationing with family. Lee is survived by sister, Susie, brother-in-law, Rick Stryker, brother, Eddie, and nieces, Dawn, Tracy, Candy, and Darci.

Peter Wrangell January 22, 1937 - December 30, 2012 Peter Wrangell moved into The Arc of San Diego’s Santana Residential Home in Santee in April 1982, where he lived for 30 years. Program Manager, Rebecca Duyo, remembers him as “a gentleman through and through who always went along with the group and was laid back.” Peter greatly enjoyed dinners with his housemates. Peter lived a wonderful life and is survived by his step-sister and stepbrother, Jane and Peter Davis, and half-brother, John Davis.

T

he Jewels of San Diego All That Jazz black-tie affair on May 31, 2013 in the Presidential Ball Room at the U.S. Grant Hotel was a step into the Roaring Twenties!

Surrounded by flapper girl greeters, guests re-lived the jazz age as they sipped cocktails, listened to lively piano, and participated in a smashing silent auction and vendor boutiques. The reception was followed by a spirited live auction boasting high-ticket items such as a stay at the Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa and Charger Girl for a Day. After a decadent culinary showcase with delectable desserts, guests danced the night away to music from Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment. The Arc of San Diego is deeply grateful to the Jewels Committee, Honorary Jewels Chairs, our sponsors, and everyone who played a part in making All That Jazz a huge success!

Salute to Excellence!

Gazing At The Stars....

Congratulations to Our Place founder, Medical Director, and yoga devotee, Dr. Paul Kurtin. Dr. Kurtin recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Association of Neonatologists and State of California for his work in improving care in NICUs (neonatal intensive care units) around the state for many years.

Summer’s here — and to Abby that means one sure thing – Camp!

Dr. Kurtin also served as Chief Quality & Safety Officer and Director of the Sadler Center for Quality at Rady Children’s Hospital. He has spent his career caring for children and adults with chronic conditions. Dr. Kurtin is now founder and Medical Director of Our Place Yoga & Wellness Center at North Shores Vocational Center, where he teaches yoga to consumers. Dr. Kurtin is committed to improving the lives of people with disabilities through yoga classes that focus on the mental, emotional, and physical health and healing benefits of yoga. The Arc of San Diego salutes you, Dr. Kurtin, for your unwavering dedication to helping better the lives of children and adults through your medical knowledge, kindness, and belief that all people deserve to live a happy, healthy life!

Abby looks forward to reconnecting with friends, sitting around the campfire, performing in the talent show, painting, hiking....and simply having just plain, old-fashioned fun! “The Arc’s camp brings out the best in Abby and has positively changed her life for the better,” said her mother, Janeane, “It provides a comfortable and friendly environment where she feels free to be herself.”

Give A Gift

Unfortunately, this year, Abby may not have the chance to laugh, reflect, sing old camp songs, or gaze at the stars. Abby and many of our consumers will not be able to take part in this joyous summer ritual because the state has eliminated all funding for camp programs.

Your generous gift will help cover the cost of camp and provide campers with an unforgettable summer experience.

Today, our campers rely on private donations to help them get to camp. Would you consider sponsoring a child or adult with a disability to enjoy a week at camp?

$60 - Bus transportation to/from camp for one

Your support will give someone like Abby the gift of summer camp — a week full of fun in the sun, building memories with friends in Palomar Mountain.

$150 - Camp-A-Lot memento T-shirts for 15 low-income campers

You can mail your check payable to The Arc of San Diego, 3030 Market Street, San Diego, CA 92102, Attn: Camp Donations. An envelope is included in this Spotlight for your convenience. All donations are tax-deductible. We thank you for your contribution.
