From knowledge to market, from bench to bedside: making innovation work in the Health sector As part of the programme of the XXVII ISPIM Innovation Conference, HCP – Health Cluster Portugal, and I3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, will promote a Forum to debate the role and impact of innovation in the Health sector. The initiative will take place on the 22nd June 2016, between 15:00 and 17:30, in I3S (Porto, Portugal). The recent history of success of the Portuguese health innovation ecosystem will be reviewed by HCP, and I3S will be presented as a case of this success. A period of debate will follow, involving panellists and conference attendees in a discussion about the following topics: 1) When innovation can mean the difference between life and death – or why innovation in health care must be seen differently. 2) The health industries struggle with a major condition of high costs and low productivity in R&D. Can translational research and open innovation be a cure for this? 3) How many helixes are needed to make a health cluster work? The roles of patients and carers in health innovation. The event will end with a guided tour to the I3S building and laboratories. Please join us for a lively discussion and for networking opportunities! About HCP The Health Cluster Portugal (HCP) is a private non-profit association, founded in 2008, that currently brings together about 160 members, including R&D institutions, universities, hospitals, organisations from civil society, and companies in the areas of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical technologies and services. Together, HCP and its members develop innovative projects in areas such as translational and clinical research, active and healthy ageing, health tourism, and eHealth, with the purpose of turning knowledge into new solutions that contribute to the improvement of human health and wellbeing. And, also together, work to make Portugal the right place to invest and build partnerships in Health. About I3S The I3S consortium, headed by the University of Porto, results from the long-term collaboration between the institutes IBMC, INEB and IPATIMUP, encompassing joint projects, co-supervision of PhD students, sharing of large equipment and employment of research staff under coordinated policies. Six schools of the University of Porto (FMUP, ICBAS, FMDUP, FCUP, FEUP and FFUP) and three hospitals (CH S João, CH Porto and IPO) also contribute to the activities of I3S. This wide participation of schools, research institutions and hospitals in a research institute is unique in Portugal and is a valuable asset for science and technology development. This combination creates an environment favourable for real breakthrough research and translation of discoveries into the clinic. In a new building the I3S will provide a vibrant environment for new scientific discoveries and translation into improvements in health care. The I3S focuses on three Integrative Programs: Cancer, Host Response and Interaction, and Neurobiology and Neurologic Disease. To learn more about I3S, please visit www.i3s.up.pt.
