Who is Ulf Tölle MPH?

Ulf Tölle MPH is a neuromuscular reeducation specialist with 30+ years’ experi-

ence. After working as a performer and soloist, Ulf has coached world-class athletes and musicians. Since the '90s he has worked in employee health and for the past 9 years he has been working in the office of an orthopaedic specialist in Zurich, specializing in movement rehabilitation after injuries and accidents. He supports people of all ranks, and shows them how to achieve a better quality of life by learning to improve and master their own movement quality.

General Information on the Study Groups GP (control) – normal care, no exercise, analgesics as needed Exercise – prescription for exercise from a doctor with nurse delivering behavioural counselling once a week for 6 weeks Massage – 1 massage per week for 6 weeks 6 AT lessons – 2 lessons per week in the first 2 weeks; thereafter 1 lesson p. w. (Total 4 weeks of AT-lessons) 24 AT lessons – 2 lessons per week in the first 6 weeks; then1 lesson p. w. for 6 weeks; thereafter 1 lesson per fortnight for 8 weeks 1 lesson after 7 months and 1 lesson after 9 months. (Total 20 weeks AT-lessons plus 2 review lessons)

Please note:

1) the graphs are displaying data collected at different measurement points (at start, 3 months after and 12 months after), regardless of the time period and duration of the interventions: i.e. for 4 weeks (such as with the 6 AT–lessons), for 6 weeks (such as with the 6 massage sessions and with the exercise sessions resp.) or for 5 months (such as with the 24 AT–lessons).

2) The study groups who received Alexander-Technique-lessons improved their result throughout the whole course of the study, even though their lessons had ended a long time ago. 4

Health Promotion at Victorinox

In 2002 Victorinox Swiss Knives Implemented the Alexander-Technique to Promote Employee Health Employee absentee hours had skyrocketed in recent years. The reason? Most absentee days taken by the Ibach plant's 967 employees were the result of Repetitive Strain Injuries.

Victorinox implemented their Balance Time® programme, with the aim of supporting their employees to consciously pause for a moment, interrupt building patterns of tension and promoting recovery before employees reach exhaustion.

Since staff participated in this movement workshop and were shown how to use the Alexander Technique, the absentee hours went down from 47000 hours to 22000 hours – a decrease of 53%! Paul Auf der Maur, who is responsible for running Victorinox's health programme, confirmed that the reduced absentee hours began immediately, and has continued ever since.

Ulf Tölle MPH a.k.a. The Motion Master®

is a highly qualified health expert in neuro-muscular re-education, with more than 25 years coaching experience. His professional background is in performance (as a soloist and musician in orchestra) and performance coaching with 30+ years’ experience in the Alexander-Technique. He holds teacher certificates from two different traditions in the Alexander-Technique and a Master’ s Degree in Public Health from the Universities Basel, Bern and Zurich. Between 2006 and 2010 he was chair of the Swiss Society of Alexander-Teachers SVLAT/ASPTA, and from 2011 to 2013 he chaired the Alexander Technique Congress Association ATCA.
