Making Toms River Safer: Addressing Concerns at Brown’s Woods (Toms River, NJ) The Toms River governing body and the Toms River Police Department have pledged to continue to work to make the Township a safer place for residents to live, work and play. With that in mind, over the last few years, the Toms River Police Department has seen an increase in the amount of criminal activity at Brown’s Woods, a forty acre stretch of preserved land on the Toms River at Washington Street and Whittier Avenue. Past incidents have included a suicide in the park, drug overdoses, underage drinking, fights and campfires. Township Clean Communities workers conducted

more cleanups at the property due to juveniles leaving behind glass bottles, remnants of campfires and drug paraphernalia. In response, the Toms River Police Department has taken several steps to address these issues. The Department has added extra police and sanitation patrols at the property. In addition, the Township passed an ordinance enforcing no parking from Dusk to 8 a.m. along Cedar Drive. Furthermore, the Township is adding new security lighting see WOODS page 7

TREATMENT DEVICES TO HELP PROTECT BARNEGAT BAY TOMS RIVER - Ocean County plans to install three treatment devices in Toms River Township that help stop floatables and sediments from entering the Toms River and ultimately Barnegat Bay. “The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders made a commitment to protect Barnegat Bay and these treatment devices are among the ways we are preserving this waterway,” said Ocean County Freeholder Director John P. Kelly, who serves as liaison to the Ocean County Engineering Department. “We have installed several of these devices around Ocean County and know they are a help in keeping pollutants out of our bay and its tributaries.” The Board of Freeholders expects to award a contract to Underground Utilities Corp., Linden, in the amount of $508,421 to perform the work which is scheduled to begin this summer. The Manufactured Treatment Devices will be installed at existing drainage outfalls on East Water Street, Caldwell Lane and Lakehurst Road. The concrete device works to force particles or sediment to drop to the bottom of it. The Ocean County Road Department’s stormwater management crews can easily remove the sediment from the treatment device and properly dispose of it. “These projects are very important because we are treating areas that have not been treated before,” said Kelly, who also serves as Director of Law and Public Safety. “In the 1970s, basins were designed for flood control. In the 1990s, we began addressing water quality like removing trash and sediments from stormwater. Now we continue to remove sediment and also nutrients.” The focus of the installation of the manufactured treatment devices has been the Toms River watershed. “The Toms River watershed feeds into the bay,” Kelly said. “By stopping sediments from entering the river we are curtailing floatables from entering the bay.” Ocean County’s commitment to protecting and preserving one of its most treasured resources – Barnegat Bay – stems back decades to the creation of the Ocean County Utilities Authority in 1976. “The creation of the OCUA brought a halt to discharging sewage into the bay and

Drug Distribution Arrests On May 6th, 2016, the Toms River Police Departments Special Enforcement Team concluded a several week investigation into drug distribution from the Rodeway Inn located on Route 37 East. Following the execution of a court authorized search warrant at the hotel Alicia Zalewski, 29 of Toms River, and Glenworth Guiste, 38 of South Toms River were arrested. Officers seized 274 wax folds of heroin marked “focused”, a small amount of crack cocaine and confiscated over $1,000.00 in U.S. currency. Zalewski is charged with possession of heroin and possession of heroin with the intent to distribute. Her bail was set at $15,000.00 no ten percent. Guiste is charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with the intent to distribute and possession of crack cocaine. His bail was set at $25,000.00 no ten percent.

implemented a state of the art treatment system in order to protect the environment,” said Freeholder John C. Bartlett Jr., who serves as liaison to the OCUA. “Over the years, the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders has implemented a series of steps to keep pollution from entering local waterways and today it continues to expand its scope of managing stormwater and runoff.” Funding from the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust will be used to pay for a portion of the construction cost. “We have been working in partnership with the state to help protect the bay,” Kelly said. “The trust has helped to fund the installation of many of these treatment devices.”

source: anne-elisabeth.com.au ARIES: 21st March & 20th April If you feel you need to discuss taking something in a new direction with somebody else, now is the time to do so, as they are more likely to be receptive. You need to be well prepared when it comes to longterm outcomes because they will likely question you on details or how this might affect matters on a daily basis. TAURUS: 21st April & 20th May Whatever you have been pondering or attempting to make a definite decision on since early April can now become crystal clear, particularly what can be expected as time goes on. You have got through to mid June to follow through and make any decisions necessary. Maintaining a careful, conservative approach suits you best. GEMINI: 21st May & 20th June The New Moon, which occurs in your sign this week will be exceptionally busy. This is your time to consider changes or new directions that would be in your best interests on a personal level. Pressure could be coming from others for you to take on more responsibility. It may not be in your best interests to ignore this entirely. CANCER: 21st June & 22nd July There are new directions developing behind the scenes, which are not likely to result in an outcome for another month. You need to be conscious of those around you that you may not be able to trust. Don’t give them too much information. Those you can trust you will know without a doubt and will be able to rely on their support. LEO: 23rd July & 22nd August Now is a good time to review whether your priorities are in good order, most especially if you feel you are not properly committing yourself. You are under influences that tend to encourage a wandering or easily distracted attitude. You can be mentally focused to greater commitment to stricter daily patterns of behavior. VIRGO: 23rd August & 22nd September If a situation arises that increases your obligations, don’t automatically be too generous of yourself, especially if this can lead to greater restrictions with home and family or the way you have things structured at the moment. You need to question exactly who would benefit most from this and it is very likely not you. LIBRA: 23rd September & 22nd October You can begin to sense that new long-term opportunities are a real possibility. This may arise from realizing that certain things need or are coming to an end. Some sort of practical application needs to be made when it comes to either gathering the right information or getting into discussions that will make your ideas clearer. SCORPIO: 23rd October & 21st November There can be forthright discussion between yourself and somebody else on matters that have been floating around since early April. Feeling uncertain of exactly where they stand can be a problem for you. It is not unreasonable that you feel this way because they might have an issue with your priorities. All this will unfold slowly. SAGITTARIUS: 22nd November & 21st December New directions can take shape in your dealings with other people. Their approach will be most charming but not necessarily reliable. When it comes to the underlying security of the situation, it can be most unclear. You need to keep an eye out for the way in which any changes can increase your obligations while benefiting them. CAPRICORN: 22nd December & 19th January It might be time you focused on your health and took a new approach to your daily patterns when it comes diet and exercise as well as getting proper rest and sleep. This does not have to interfere with certain things you enjoy but even those have to be better planned rather than just going with the flow with a distracting result. AQUARIUS: 20th January & 18th February You need to focus on new opportunities that can provide greater pleasure and enjoyment in your life. To do this successfully you must apply definite focus to the way you want to structure things. You cannot let the desires of others to put pressure on you, which can include financially. Take responsibility for your own priorities. PISCES: 19th February & 20th March Anything new you want to put into place when it comes to home and family matters should be pursued. You could find ideas you have been toying with for a while will become more definite or you start to realize dreams can be accomplished. Even so, there will be no escape from the need to commit. You have to rely on yourself here.

OCEAN COUNTYRUN GOLF COURSES ARE UP TO PAR

TOMS RIVER – Golfers are coming back to the two courses operated by Ocean County. “We have been seeing our numbers increase substantially based on a three-year average,” said Ocean County Freeholder John C. Bartlett Jr., who serves as liaison to the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation. “These courses are wellmaintained and are once again growing in popularity.” Ocean County operates two golf courses – the Ocean County Golf Course at Atlantis in Little Egg Harbor Township and the Ocean County Golf Course at Forge Pond in Brick Township. Attendance at the two courses had been negatively affected by the recession and Superstorm Sandy. “I am pleased to see people in large numbers are again using our courses,” Bartlett said. “Each course offers our residents a different golf experience.” Ocean County Golf Course at Atlantis, located on Country Club Boulevard, is an exceptional par-72 championship course designed by George Fazio. It is meticulously maintained and has many challenging holes, such as the scenic but tricky par-three sixth hole, where the golfer must negotiate a pond in the middle of the fairway in order to reach the green. Ocean County Golf Course at Forge Pond, located in the Northeastern region of Ocean County is a well-manicured par-60 executive course tucked into a 300-acre conservation area. The fairways offer a challenge to even the most experienced golfer, yet allow the novice to perfect their game. Here too, rates are very reasonable, especially for resident senior citizens. Freeholder Director John P. Kelly said the county-run golf courses fill a niche in the County. “They can be used by everyone,” he said. “And, they are affordable.” Bartlett noted that rounds played at the Forge Pond Golf Course are up more than 43 percent with more than 4,000 rounds played this year and year to date deposits have increased about 11 percent. The numbers at Atlantis are even stronger as rounds played have increased almost 70 percent to more than 5,000 rounds in 2016 and deposits are up almost 17 see PAR page 5

LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS AND NEW HANGARS COMING TO OCEAN COUNTY AIRPORT

TOMS RIVER – Improvements to the main runway’s lighting system and the construction of an additional t-hangar to house planes already on a waiting list are planned for the Ocean County Airport off Route 530 in Berkeley Township.

building is expected in December.

“The lighting improvements for the main runway will improve safety for pilots coming into and leaving the airport,” said Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari, who serves as liaison to the facility. “And, a new eight unit t-hangar building to be constructed by the end of this year will help us reduce the current waiting list allowing more pilots to store their planes at the airport.

“These hangars are very important to the airport,” Vicari said. “Many visitors to Ocean County own second homes here and are looking for a place to keep their private planes. “This helps with our tourism efforts,” Vicari said.

“Whether it’s for public safety or to help our economic efforts, the Ocean County Airport is an important service in Ocean County,” Vicari said. “This new t-hangar will be of no cost to the county and will answer a growing need at this facility.” Ocean Aircraft Storage, a partner with county’s fixed based operator, Ocean Aire, will operate the new t-hangar which will consist of a eight unit building located adjacent to the existing t-hangar buildings. “The county developed a land lease with Ocean Aircraft Storage that will allow for the construction of the new t-hangar building,” Vicari said. “Ocean Aircraft Storage will construct the t-hangar building at its own cost and expense.” A lease agreement for the t-hangar construction was signed May 18 with Ocean Aircraft Storage. Under the agreement, the lease will be for a 10-year term with an option of two additional 10-year terms. In addition, the County will receive annually 15 percent of the gross revenue or $5,000, whichever is higher. “We are working in partnership with the fixed base operator to minimize any cost to the County,” Vicari said. “Ocean Aircraft Storage is paying for the construction and we will derive a revenue as a result of this new building.” The County has four t-hangar buildings consisting of 36 individual units currently located at the airport. “Because of the waiting list we anticipate the new hangar will be filled as soon as work is completed,” Vicari said. Completion of the

Vicari added the new hangar is consistent with the Airport Capital Improvement Program and the Pinelands Memorandum of Agreement.

The County expects to go out to bid on the project in June and the work will take about three months to complete. “This is yet another important safety upgrade to the airport,” said Freeholder Director John P. Kelly, who serves as Director of Law and Public Safety. “We want to make sure the pilots using our facility are accessing an airport that is well-maintained and safe.”

Skippy

This little guy will melt your heart; he’s already a staff fave. He’s about 25 lbs and a year old. He has the markings of a border collie but he has a long body so maybe some Corgi? He’s a Borgi!! Skippy is VERY energetic. He will need lots of mental and physical exercise. He always seems to be smiling. Loves to go for walks and also run around in the agility pen. He does not bring the ball back but will chase it. He really likes being with people and can’t wait to get out and play! Definitely a special little dog with a beautiful coat of fur and gorgeous eyes! Skippy can be a little mouthy (common with these breeds) so we are recommending a home with kids 12+.

Shadow

Shadow is a gorgeous 2 1/2 yr old mix. We do know this boy was adopted out shortly in the previous shelter but was returned because he was not great with the 1 year old child in the home. We are looking for an adult only home or one with older teenagers. Little ones seem to bother Shadow. Other than that he is a great dog looking for his forever home. Please come meet him today!! Kids 15+

Mookie

Mookie was adopted out from us as a kitten. He is now 2 years old and returned because he had a urinary tract infection and the owner did not want to treat it. He had one in the past and was on prescription cat food and was doing great. Then another cat was brought into the home and he started having accidents...stress causes UTI’s......so Mookie was returned. Mookie is happier being the only pet in the home but he does get along with kids. He will need to be on C/D stress dry cat food for life so he remains healthy. This sweet loving boy loves to be brushed and so deserves a home where he won’t be cast out again!

The no parking enforcement is nothing new to town parks. We are simply adding this park to the overnight restricted activity list.” Mayor Thomas F. Kelaher stated, “Our goal is to protect the natural beauty of Brown’s Woods and make it a safe place for residents to enjoy. To that end, we are enhancing the security of the property with additional lighting, restricted parking on Cedar Drive and increased police patrols. As Mayor, my top priority is the safety of our community and working with our residents to keep our neighborhoods safe. The governing body will continue to work with law enforcement and the Barnegat Bay Partnership to ensure that Toms River is responsive, proactive and efficient when it comes to keeping our parks clean and our residents and community safe.” “With over 40 acres of forest and other habitats, a beautiful beach, and an abundance of wildlife, the Brown’s Woods Preserve is an incredible public resource for the citizens of Toms River,” said Dr. Stan Hales, Director of the Barnegat Bay Partnership, which is located on the property. “We support the Township’s actions to ensure the safety of those who visit the property. As Barnegat Bay Partnership continues to provide educational programs and conduct research at Brown’s Woods, public safety and the protection of natural resources are important to us. We thank the Township for taking steps so the property can be safely enjoyed by all.” About Brown’s Woods The land at Brown’s Woods is owned by Toms River Township, which acquired it through funding from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Acres Program. The house on the property was leased to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office for several years. In 2011, the governing body passed an ordinance that created a lease agreement for the Barnegat Bay Partnership to use the property for $1 a year. The lease agreement is between the Township and Ocean County College, who oversees the non-profit that works to save Barnegat Bay.

Meet RipTide, the Newest Member of the BlueClaws Family Lifeguard to head up BlueClaws Beach Patrol

While the flowers bloom and the temperature rises, in Florida, March also means the start of the baseball season. Out on fields across the Sunshine State, under the bright sun, collections of players work to hone their skills and become teams. Meanwhile, fans come down from the north to avoid the last winter snow watch the baseball season emerge. One of those fans, who made the trip south was Buster. The biggest BlueClaws fan of them all, and one of the biggest baseball fans, makes the annual trip down to Clearwater to watch the Phillies and meet some soon-to-be BlueClaws. This Spring Training morning commenced in a manner no different than most on Buster’s trip - with a pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich and a trip to the beach. Buster brought his wiffle ball bat like always, and after a brief swim, Buster rounded up a group of new friends to play. Buster always wanted to be a centerfielder - some of his favorite BlueClaws were centerfielders like Michael Bourn, Anthony Gose, Jiwan James, Aaron Altherr, and Carlos Tocci - so he lined up in centerfield. The batter hit a long fly ball - a gust of wind sent it over Buster’s head. He chased it a long way back, looked up, reached up and... CRASH!!! Buster was lying on the ground. He looked up and realized he crashed into a large,

green, lifeguard. It really hurt (it might have been that shell). The lifeguard, it turned out, was a turtle. Buster, who was on the ground, heard the whistle, and knew he was in trouble. “You have to be more careful,” said the lifeguard. “Remember - safety is for everybody!” Buster, of course, knew the turtle was right. He introduced himself - “Hi, I’m Buster.” “Be careful, Buster. But nice to meet you. I’m RipTide,” he said. “I’m a big Phillies fan, so I’m familiar with your work.” “That’s certainly good to hear, always happy to meet a fan,” exclaimed an obviously excited Buster. The next day, after his pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich, and morning swim, Buster was back out there playing wiffle ball again. He tracked down a long fly ball, and who did he see getting in his morning run? Sure enough, it was RipTide. Buster waved him over and they started talking. They had a few things in common. RipTide, a Clearwater native, loved the Phillies, like Buster. Of course, they both loved the beach, baseball, and a ballpark frank. The two became fast friends, going to breakfast, the beach, and the ballpark for Phillies Spring Training Games. RipTide, as it turned out, had been a lifeguard on the beaches of Florida for many years, but was

growing tired of the long, hot summers. Once Spring Training ended, so did the spring in RipTide’s step. “Why don’t you come north with me?” asked Buster. “The weather is great. The ballpark is great. And I heard there’s an opening with the BlueClaws Beach Patrol. I’ll even introduce you to the Phillie Phanatic.” RipTide was intrigued. He had always wanted to meet the Phillie Phanatic. But would the offer be good enough to get him up north? RipTide had to think about it. Certainly it was an exciting new opportunity. He had heard the wonderful stories of the people, places, and things to do in New Jersey. One thing was for certain, RipTide loved helping people. He had made a life out of doing just that as not just a lifeguard, but the top lifeguard on the beaches of Clearwater. He spoke at schools about the importance of safety, both on the beach and in the community. It was a true passion of his. But here was a chance to help more people. He’d be in charge of the BlueClaws Beach Patrol - what an opportunity - plus Buster promised him the chance to help educate kids through the BlueClaws and through their community initiatives. His mind was made up. He was heading to New Jersey! You’ll be able to meet RipTide at all future BlueClaws games.

POLICE

Manchester Township—The Manchester Township Police Department is proud to announce that six new from page 1 Auxiliary Police Officers took their oaths on May 23, 2016, during a ceremony in the Municipal Complex Civic Center. These Auxiliary Police Officers were sworn in to their volunteer positions before Chief Lisa Parker, other Manchester Township Police Officers, and their friends and family. The graduation marks the completion of training which began on April 17 and concluded on May 22 of this year. The officers completed approximately 50 hours of training and will begin field training by current Auxiliary Police officers. While the State of New Jersey requires only 36 hours of training for Auxiliary Officers, Manchester far exceeded the State minimum requirement. “As an Auxiliary Officer in Manchester Township, you’ll have the opportunity to be surrounded by some of the best Police Officers in the State,” said Chief Lisa Parker, who also commended the recruits for volunteering their time to better their community. “This is a great accomplishment for all of you. Today is a proud day.” Manchester Township Police Officers who served as instructors for the Auxiliary Police Academy included Sgt. Richard Mazza, Ptl. Jason Wiener and Ptl. Patrick Cervenak. The graduation of this class marks the third time the Manchester Township Police Department has conducted an in-house basic Auxiliary Police Academy. This volunteer arm of the police department assists with nonenforcement type activities such as crowd control at events, courtroom security and general uniformed patrols throughout the Township. Additionally, the unit is activated to assist the Manchester Police during severe weather and declared State of Emergencies. The Auxiliary Officers were trained in different subject areas ranging from patrol functions, traffic control, police vehicle operations, crowd control, criminal law, preservation of evidence, court operations, first aid, CPR, police radio communications, use of force, domestic violence, report writing, and police ethics, just to name a few. The process for these six Auxiliary Officers began in December of 2015 when applications were made available to the public. The selection process and standards to become an Auxiliary Officer are similar to that of a regular police officer. The candidates passed a rigorous background check as well. All auxiliary officers are held to the highest standards consistent with that of the Manchester Township Police Department. Congratulations to our incoming Auxiliary Officers: Cirilo Hernandez, Joseph A. Dellavella, Michael R. Kelliher, Richard H. Sargeant, Susana D. Mahecha-Benitez, and Christian A. Hernandez. Gallery I Janet Esposito “ Emotions in Abstract “

What I love about abstract painting is I can have a blank canvas and colors and all of the sudden I start creating a story. I start with a shape and feelings and emotions start coming. I start with no foresight or expectation of what the end painting will look like.

40TH ANNUAL SENIOR CITIZENS ART EXHIBIT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Gallery II Sonia Schories “Two Mediums Equal One Joy” Most of my life, in between raising a family and working as a nurse, I was drawing. Perhaps, once every five or ten years, I would attempt to paint. It was nothing more than a pleasant pastime. Then twelve years ago, I retired. Without knowing what to expect, I joined the Ocean County Artist Guild. I not only joined, but enrolled in multiple workshops and classes. My first formal art class was with Mary Jo Austin. ----------

Community Medical Center - J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center The “Creative Me” Program The expression of oneself through art has been with humankind since the beginning of time. Art, as we know it, is the most primal way we have to share feelings and experiences. Art gives a voice to the self. The “Creative Me” program will support and create a place for those who are in the process of treatment for cancer. The project encourages a philosophy of wellbeing through expression of self. Dr. Norman D. Hungerford to Be Honored at 41st Annual Garden Party

RUMSON - Monmouth County Historical Association’s 41st Annual Garden Party will be held from 5-8pm on Sunday, June 26 at a private Rumson residence. It is with pleasure that we announce that Trustee Dr. Norman D. Hungerford will be our honoree this year for his support of historic preservation throughout Monmouth County. Norman has served on the Board of Trustees for the past 8 years and has been an active member, to say the least, of its Buildings and Grounds committee. Norman has not only had vision for each of the properties, but has then gone on to oversee the projects to their completion, often using many of his own resources. Norman’s commitment to assisting charitable organizations in Monmouth County is impressive. He has been involved with each of the Visiting Nurse Association of Central New Jersey’s “Stately Homes By-The-Sea” show house events. The Quaker Meeting House, the Borough of Shrewsbury, the Shrewsbury Garden Club, the Monmouth Reform Temple, Rumson Country Day School and Isles are just a few of the beneficiaries of Norman’s expertise and services over the years. In announcing the honoree, President Linda Bricker stated “we are grateful Dr. Hungerford’s tireless work on behalf of the Association and his support has made our historic properties flourish. His dedication, generosity and commitment to history and historic preservation are truly deserving of this honor.” Tickets start at $125 with additional underwriting and sponsorship available. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.monmouthhistory.org or call 732-462-1466 x.19.

GCU Graduates Urged to Embrace Challenge and Continue Learning Lakewood, N.J., May 24, 2016—GCU graduates should remember that receiving a degree does not mean that they are finished learning. During the Graduate Commencement Ceremony on May 19 and the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on May 20, the nearly 200 graduate students receiving their master’s degrees were reminded that change was inevitable, and that they must continue to grow, simply to keep pace, and that education remains a lifelong process. “Never stop learning. Throughout my career, I’ve never stopped learning, and I’m always eager to learn more,” said John K. Lloyd, FACHE, president and CEO of Meridian Health, who delivered the Commencement address at the graduate ceremony. Mr. Lloyd, who received an honorary Doctor of Health at the ceremony reminded the graduates to adapt in response to change, and to “never accept ‘good enough’ as good enough because the world is going to keep changing, and so should you.” Miriam Felicia Hunte ’16, president of the Student Government Association Executive Board, who spoke on behalf of more than 275 students at the undergraduate ceremony, also encouraged her fellow graduates to continue to learn. As we celebrate today, it is important to understand that life is, in fact, a journey, and not a destination,” said Miriam, who reminded her class that the theme for their GCU Orientation in 2012 was “Make Your Mark!” So I charge each of you—never stop learning, never stop improving, and never stop inspiring others. This is how we will maintain our excellence and make our mark in this world,” added Miriam, who was awarded the Julia Blake Alumni Award as the senior who best displayed outstanding loyalty and service during her GCU years. Embrace Challenge for the Benefit of All Three others were awarded honorary doctoral degrees also epitomized the ceremonies’ running theme of embracing challenge.

May 27th, 2016 The Ocean County Gazette - www.ocgazette.news 37

Rose Martin, RSM, Ph.D., a Sister of Mercy who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Health degree at the graduate ceremony, was noted in her introduction as living “in the poorest zip code in the poorest big city in the country, Philadelphia,” where she co-founded Hope Partnership for Education, a middle school and adult education center that serves the people in her neighborhood. Sister Rose also serves as executive director of the school. Maria Cordis Richey, RSM, Ph.D., Georgian Court’s sixth president and a professor emerita of English, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters 66 years after earning her bachelor’s degree from Georgian Court. It was during her tenure as president that the first graduate program and the first coeducational undergraduate programs were instituted. John R. Garbarino, chairman of OceanFirst Foundation and chairman and former CEO of OceanFirst Bank, received a Doctor of Public Service degree for expanding philanthropic efforts in the Jersey Shore community through the creation of the foundation. Mr. Garbarino, who delivered the Commencement address at the undergraduate ceremony, shared his personal challenge story about fighting stringent banking regulations to create the OceanFirst Foundation. He urged the Class of 2016 “to face the myriad of challenges that confront you and resolve to make a difference in the lives of future generations.” He noted that a “lifetime of challenges” awaited them and encouraged them to “go forward and meet these challenges to provide a better world for all future generations.” His words were echoed by GCU Provost William J. Behre, Ph.D., who noted that embracing challenge doesn’t just affect others. He reminded all in attendance that “we should seek out challenges, specifically because they are difficult—because they can change the world and because they can bring out the best in us.” Dr. Behre advised the graduates to “define what things in the world need changing and how facing these challenges could bring out the best in you.” Paul Nii-Ankamah Addo II ’15, who spoke on behalf of his fellow graduate students, expressed hope that he and his fellow graduates will do their “very best to use the knowledge and skills acquired from our education and from our life experiences to make this world a better place.”
