For the second-consecutive season, Bethlehem Steel FC opens its USL campaign at Goodman Stadium on the campus of Lehigh University. Steel FC has yet to win a home opener and is 1-1 all-time in season openers, with the lone win coming in the club’s inaugural match at FC Montreal in 2016.

FOUR STEEL FC ROOKIES READY FOR DEBUT

Sunday’s contest could see the first professional appearances by the four Steel FC rookies. The club’s 2018 rookie class includes defender AJ Paterson, midfielders Mike Catalano, AJ Paterson and forward Aidan Apodaca. All four were selected in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft with Catalano and Apodaca chosen by the Philadelphia Union while Paterson (NYCFC) and Skundrich (LA Galaxy) were signed in preseason.

FIVE NEWCOMERS JOIN STEEL FC

Bethlehem Steel FC were busy in the offseason, acquiring five players with previous professional experience to join the four returners from last year’s USL Cup Playoff squad. Forward Brandon Allen joined the club from New York Red Bulls II, where he netted 24 goals over the last two seasons. In the midfield, Omar Holness brings USL and MLS experience after spending the past two seasons with Real Salt Lake. The defense was bolstered by the additions of Brandon Aubrey (Toronto FC II), Olivier Mbaizo (Cameroon) and the acquisition of Prosper Chiluya on loan from Kafue Celtic FC in Zambia.

STEEL FC OPENS 2018 AGAINST KICKERS AT GOODMAN STADIUM Bethlehem Steel FC’s 34-match USL campaign begins on Sunday, March 18 when the club hosts the Richmond Kickers. Steel FC is 1-1 in all-time season openers and looking for its first home-opening victory in the club’s history. Last season, Richmond claimed the twomatch season series with a late victory at home.

PREVIOUS MEETING The two clubs met in July, with Kickers snapping Steel FC’s eight-match unbeaten streak with a late goal in the 87th minute. Steel FC tallied goals from Ken Tribbett and a free kick rocket from Aaron Jones but it was Samuel Asante’s goal the proved decisive.

COACH’S CORNER Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke: On the club’s preparation throughout the preseason… “I think a lot of us have spoken throughout preseason so I would just say at this point that we are very excited to get the season started. Six weeks is a long time when you’re just in a training environment, mixing in some preseason games and I know a lot of our more experienced players are really looking forward to getting the league started.” On positions that the staff is focusing in on in regards to Richmond… “I think you have to look at the addition of Mekeil Williams but also Heviel Cordoves up top, Williams across the back line. I would also highlight Giuseppe Gentile. They have added depth but also starting quality depth in three or four positions so I would expect Richmond to be a lot stronger than they were last year. And they beat us last year so a big test right off the bat.” On the importance of starting the season off with a win at home against a quality opponent like Richmond… “One of our focuses in this offseason has been to improve our home form. We were very good on the road last year but we were not as good as we wanted to be at home, not even really close to it. So this presents a great opportunity because it comes right off the bat against a good, solid opponent but one that I think is beatable if we are really on our game. So it’s an excellent opportunity this weekend to start working and start off on the right foot working toward that team goal.”

Bethlehem Steel FC continued its history-making run of play, battling back from a first half deficit to draw with the Richmond Kickers, 1-1.

Bethlehem Steel FC saw its historic eight-match unbeaten streak snapped on a late goal, as the club fell on the road to the Richmond Kickers, 3-2.

After a 92-minute weather delay due to heavy rain and lightning, the two clubs battled with Steel FC pushing its unbeaten streak to six games, the first in the club’s history. Philadelphia Union defender Aaron Jones provided the equalizer for Steel FC, as the goal erased a first-half strike from Richmond. The goal was the English rookie’s first in his professional career.

Goals by Philadelphia Union defenders Aaron Jones and Ken Tribbett provided Steel FC’s offense, while fellow defender Auston Trusty tallied the first professional assist of his career. Jones’ goal was the second of 2017, both coming on free kicks against Richmond.

The hard-fought encounter, demonstrated Steel FC’s defensive prowess as the club finished with only nine players. They battled nearly a half hour with only 10 men after Hugh Roberts was sent off with a red card in the 65th minute but held Richmond scoreless. Jamaican forward Cory Burke was also sent off, picking up a pair of yellow cards.

After both teams fought for a game-winning goal, Richmond snuck the final blow to end the streak as Samuel Asante collected a cleared ball from outside the 18-yard box and fired a shot into the side netting for the winner.

BETHLEHEM STEEL FC VS RICHMOND KICKERS 2018 BETHELEHEM STEEL FC TECHNICAL STAFF Head coach Brendan Burke Burke is in his third season as head coach of Bethlehem Steel FC, coaching the squad to an 18-26-18 regular season record during the club’s first two seasons in the modern era. He was formally introduced as the club’s first head coach on Oct. 29, 2015 and recently signed an extension to remain with Steel FC for the foreseeable future. During his two seasons with Bethlehem Steel FC, he has navigated 60 different starting XI combinations in 62 career matches while guiding three players to first team contracts with Derrick Jones in 2016 and the duo of Cory Burke and Matt Real after the 2017 season. Overall, Burke had coached 58 players including 25 players with ties to the first team and 12 from the Philadelphia Union Academy the past two seasons. Prior to joining Steel FC, Burke served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Union from 2011 through 2014. He was heavily involved in all levels of the U.S. Soccer pyramid, including serving as head coach of the Union’s PDL affiliate Reading United from 2008-13 where he had a record of 71-18-19. During his time with Reading, Burke coached 49 players that signed professional contracts including Ray Gaddis, C.J. Sapong, John McCarthy and Matt Hedges. Burke served as associate head coach at Northeastern University in 2015.

Assistant coach Stephen Hogan Hogan, who formerly served as the head coach of the Philadelphia Union’s PDL affiliate, Reading United, is in his third season with Steel FC. Hogan guided the PDL squad to a 22-5-1 record in his two seasons with Reading United. The club went 10-3-1 and won the Mid-Atlantic Division title along with an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals. Hogan followed up with an even stronger 12-2-0 record in 2017, tying for the most wins in the 72-team league. During the season that saw the club reach the postseason for the ninth time in 10 seasons, Hogan’s squad conceded an Eastern Conference-low 10 goals. As a Reading player under Brendan Burke, he made 52 appearances, second most in club history, while playing from 2007-10. He helped lead the team to the 2009 PDL Regular Season Title and the PDL National Semifinals in 2008 and 2010. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Hogan spent two seasons as head coach at the College of Saint Rose’s men’s soccer program.
