March 5, 2018 PELHAM STUDENTS HONORED WITH CHARACTER IN ACTION AWARDS We honored four very special Pelham students with Character in Action Awards last week! One student from each school was chosen for their exemplary character and for consistently going above and beyond to set good examples for other students to follow. Congratulations Victoria, Shawn, Jake, and Ethan! The Character in Action Award is made possible through a partnership between the Shelby County Juvenile Court, the Shelby County District Attorney's Office, the Shelby County Drug Free Coalition, and the three school districts in Shelby County. APPROVED CALENDAR FOR 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR The Pelham City Schools 2018-2019 School Calendar was approved at the Board of Education meeting on February 26. SCHOOLS CELEBRATE READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK

In recognition of Dr. Seuss' birthday, students enjoyed themed dress-up days and activities to celebrate books and the joy of reading during Read Across America Week. This year, guest readers from the Pelham Police Department visited the elementary schools and read to several classes. Pelham High students participated in a book tasting, and at Pelham Park Middle, choir and theatre students presented a fun and lively Seussical performance for teachers and classmates.

PHS EXPANDS CAREER TECH OFFERINGS "Pelham High School is expanding its career tech programs for the 2018-19 school year, according to the district's director of curriculum and instruction Shannon Bogert. Bogert said the school system is expanding its biomedical and engineering course offerings and will be implementing an education and training program for aspiring teachers. Bogert said engineering and biomedical were both Career Academy courses, but they are being switched to the school's career tech program.

Bogert said the switch will require the programs to meet certain state and federal guidelines, but the programs will receive federal funds and this will also open the door for more opportunities for students and more specialized training for teachers. EmpowerU at Pelham Park Middle School Tuesday, March 6 at 4 pm The topic of the March meeting is "Study Skills". PHS Pajama/Athletic Wear Week March 19-23 Pelham High School students, teachers, and staff have the opportunity to get comfy the week prior to spring break with this fundraiser. Bring $1 each day for the opportunity to wear either pajamas or athletic wear. Other dress code rules apply. All proceeds benefit PHS. Board of Education Meeting Monday, March 19 at 6:30 pm Pelham Oaks Elementary School Fine Arts Showcase Tuesday, March 20 Doors open at 6 pm. Performances begin at 6:30 pm. Pelham High School Auditorium The system-wide event will showcase the arts programs and talents of students from all schools and will feature performances, art work, culinary samples, and more. Principal Coffee Chat/Green & Gold Initiative Informational Meeting Wednesday, March 21 at 5:30 pm Pelham High School Parents are encouraged to join the conversation about a new student engagement program that promotes accountability and builds skills and experience to prepare high school students for the future. Spring Break March 26-30 Summer Day Camp

Register for a week or the whole summer! Summer Day Camp will run from May 29thAugust 3rd. All Pelham City Schools registered students who will be entering Kindergarten though 6th grade are welcome to attend. Hours are 7:00 am until 6:00 pm Monday-Friday (Closed July 4th).
