March 7, 1903 Lawrence Welk is Born Lawrence Welk was a well-known American bandleader. He was born in Strasburg, North Dakota on March 11, 1903. Lawrence’s family was German, as were most of the people in the small area where he lived. Since people did not travel as much in the early 1900s, there was no need for him to speak English. He spoke the language he was most used to hearing, which was German. He did not learn to speak English until he was much older.

When Lawrence was young, he had to leave school, but he did not stop learning. He spent much time practicing his music and began playing in local bands. When he was older, he had a television show where he was the host and a band played music that people at the time were used to dancing to. The show was on television for about twenty-seven years.

Music is an interesting subject. There are many different kinds. Some is used to worship and praise God. Some is used to just listen to and relax. Some is used to tell a story, march to, or for dancing. Whatever you use music for, it is all made up of the same notes, just played on different types of instruments and in different ways.

Here is a treble clef. The treble clef starts on the line for the note G. Connect the dots on the second treble clef in the picture. It should look like the last one on the right when you are finished. The line of the staff (the lines that the notes go on) where you start with number 1 is the line for the note G.

Here is a picture of a musical staff. A staff has 5 lines and 4 spaces. This staff has a treble clef on it.

On a staff with a treble clef, each line and space has a letter that goes with it. This tells you what note to play when you are playing an instrument, or what note to sing when you are singing. The notes on this staff have their names written on them, but they are not like that when you are actually reading music. You have to memorize the names.

There are also different kinds of notes. The different kinds of notes tell you how long to hold the note when you play it or sing it. Some kinds are held for a very short time, and others are held for a very long time. The whole note is held for the longest time of the notes we are showing here. The thirty-second note is held for the shortest time of the notes we have here.

whole note

half note

quarter note

eighth note

sixteenth note

thirty-second note

Each of these notes can be placed anywhere on the staff, so it will tell you what note to play or sing and how long to hold it. There is so much to learn to be good at playing or singing when you have to read the music—so much more than we have talked about here. Remember when you hear someone who is really good with music just how much they had to practice and learn to be able to sound the way they do.
