*Baroque period composer

Johann Sebastian Bach was born the youngest child to Johann Ambrosius Bach and Elisabeth Lammerhirt, in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. By the age of ten both his parents had died and he was sent to live with his older brother, Johann Christoph, who was a church organist in Ohrdruf. J.S. Bach came from a long line of musicians that stretched back several generations. Johann Christoph continued his younger brothers musical training and education by enrolling him in a local school. Bach lived with his brother's family until he was 15 years old. Bach had a beautiful soprano voice, which helped him gain a position at a school in Lüneburg. However, sometime after his arrival, his voiced changed and Bach switched to violin and the harpsichord. Local organist George Böhm, greatly influenced Bach. He landed his first job in 1703, as a musician at the court of Duke Johann Ernst in Weimar. There he was a jack-of-all-trades, serving as a violinst at times, he filled in for the official organist. In1706, Bach married his cousin, Maria Barbara, who bore him seven children. Bach began to gain a reputation as a great performer, but it was his great technical skill that landed him the position of organist at the New Church in Arnstadt. In his position, he was responsible for providing music for religious services and special events as well as giving music instruction. However, Bach was a free spirit and often got in to trouble by the church officials for not rehearsing his students frequently enough. It also didn't help that he extended his stay in Lübeck by a few extra months without informing anyone. In 1717, Bach accepted a position with Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen. The prince has a passion for music, played the violin and often bought musical scores while traveling abroad. While there, Bach composed concertos for orchestras, dance suites and sonatoas for multiple instruments. He also wrote pieces for solo instruments, including some of his finest violin works. Even his secular works reflected his deep commitment to his faith with Bach often writing the initials I.N.J. for the Latin, In Nomine Jesu, meaning “In the Name of Jesus,” on his sheet music. His wife, Maria Barbara died suddenly in 1720. Bach remarried within a year and in 1721, he composed a series of concertos in tribute of the Duke of Brandenberg, which later became known as the “Brandenburg Concertos.” His new wife, Anna Magdalena, bore thirteen children. Of Bach's 20 children, ten died in infancy and four became well-known composers. Towards the end of 1749, Bach's failing eyesight was operated on by a traveling English surgeon, which ended with catastrophic results – complete blindness. Despite his failing health, but Bach continued to dictate his work to a pupil. He suffered a stroke on July 28, 1750, which resulted in death. He was buried in an unmarked grave.
