The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is a research platform funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF). SAEON is mandated to establish and manage long-term environmental observatories; maintain reliable long-term environmental data sets; promote access to data for research and/or informed decision making; and contribute to capacity building. This position is supported by the DST’s Shallow Marine and Coastal Research Infrastructure (SMCRI) programme. Marine Biology Laboratory Technician Internship (2 Year contract) SAEON, Elwandle Node, based in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, requires the services of a dynamic, self-motivated Intern to provide technical and laboratory support for their marine biological research activities. Key responsibilities will include:  Provide assistance with coastal and estuarine plankton and benthic field sampling with specific reference to the preparation and handling of biological samples and equipment.  Provide assistance with the sorting of biological material and the preparation of specimens for laboratory analysis.  Provide assistance with the analyses of biological samples (phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass; benthic species sorting and preservation)  Provide assistance with record keeping, data capturing and data processing.  Assist with the development of biological identification keys and information guides to coastal plankton and benthic species. Requirements:  Completed BTech or BSc degree in Marine Science or equivalent.  Sea-going experience on small boats.  Sound written and spoken English communication skills.  Experience in preparation and laboratory analyses of marine biological material.  Experience in the analyses, writing-up and publication of popular material.  A valid code B driver’s license.  Independent and willingness to travel to remote locations. Physical requirements:  The appointed person would be required to: bend, stoop, reach or stand for extended periods as well as be able to lift and move heavy objects.  The appointed person should be comfortable on boats (sample collection and processing) and in the water (swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving).
