Sri Lanka is one of the world’s top destinations for watching cetaceans with 28 recorded species and this itinerary is particularly designed to attract whale and dolphin watching enthusiasts to see the best of what the Indian Ocean has to offer. The highlight is undoubtedly an encounter with the largest animal to have ever lived, the Blue Whale. Spinner Dolphins are also seen regularly on most days especially off Kalpitiya in super pods numbering over a thousand individuals. Large armadas of migrating Sperm Whales may also be seen especially around March to April. Not known to many, these waters are also frequented by transient Killer Whales which come in from time to time to prey on young whales and dolphins. Bryde’s Whale, pods of Short-finned Pilot Whales, Bottlenose Dolphin, Risso’s Dolphin, Striped Dolphin are some of the other marine mammals that are infrequently encountered. For birders, heading out to see, provides opportunities for observing sea birds including rare pelagics such as the Pomarine Skua, Long-tailed Skua, Sooty Tern, White-tailed Tropic Bird, Wilson’s Storm Petrels along with the Lesser Noddy and Brown Noddy. Day 1: Airport / Kalpitiya Upon arrival you will be met by your naturalist guide at the airport and transferred to your hotel where you will relax for the remainder of the day. Overnight: Dolphin Beach, Kalpitiya Day 2: Kalpitiya Early morning go dolphin watching off Kalpitiya, where you can witness large pods of acrobatic Spinner Dolphins. Their acrobatic aerial displays are sure to amaze and put a smile to anyone’s face. Sperm Whales may also be occasionally encountered especially around March to April. Afternoon at leisure. You have the option to go snorkeling at the Bar Reef Marine sanctuary. Overnight: Dolphin Beach, Kalpitiya

Day 3: Kalpitiya / Ahangama After a morning at sea in search of Spinner Dolphins, travel to Ahangama in the south coast and spend the evening at leisure by the beach. Overnight: Mosvold Villa, Ahangama Days 4-6: Mirissa Early morning, head out to see from Mirissa Fisheries Harbour in search of Blue Whales and other marine wildlife. Afternoon at leisure. Optional excursions include a boat safari along the Nilwala River in Matara can be arranged where you can encounter Saltwater Crocodiles at close-range or a guided visit to the 17th century Dutch built Galle Fort. Overnight: Mosvold Villa, Ahangama

Day 7: Departure Today, you will be dropped off at the Bandaranaike International Airport.
