Master Builders Warns Builders About Risk Master Builders Acting Director, Graeme Dix, has urged commercial builders to be acutely aware of the commercial risks they accept in the current tough economic environment being experienced in the Western Australian building and construction industry. “Market conditions in the commercial sector are the most difficult they have been for many years,” Mr Dix said. “The current difficult circumstances faced by Cooper & Oxley, one of the state’s most highly respected and trusted commercial builders in the WA construction sector, highlights how one difficult construction project can overturn years of hard work and potentially cause extremely serious consequences for a builder, subcontractors and suppliers.” Mr Dix said Master Builders has been raising the issue of clients, including the WA Government, pushing down construction project costs and unreasonably shifting the commercial risk of building onto builders under onerous contract conditions. “Cooper & Oxley has established an excellent reputation – earned over six decades – for promptly paying their subcontractors for work done,” Mr Dix said. “The current difficulties being experienced by the builder and consequently the subcontractors, provide a sobering reminder of what can happen when unrealistic and onerous contract terms are imposed on a builder.” “There are no easy answers to solve this situation. Builders need to push back against clients who seek to shift all the risk onto the contractor in what are commercial ventures.” Mr Dix said that, for the sake of all stakeholders, and the wider construction industry, Master Builders hoped Cooper & Oxley would be able to work through its difficulties in order to continue trading. “Cooper & Oxley has been around for almost 60 years and is an award-winning builder,” he said. “Historically, the company represents what is good about the WA building industry and has employed thousands of WA subcontractors and workers over that time.” For more information please contact: Graeme Dix, Acting Director- w: 9476 9800 m: 0407 788 001
