Part I Total Crime A 12% upturn for Serious crime has been incurred in Cambridge when compared against the first five months of 2014, driven by an additional 119 index crimes registered between January 1st and June 1st of this year. When measured against the five-year average, a modest 5% decrease in Part One crime has been recorded. Further analysis of the crime totals for the first five months of this year indicates that, while violent crimes recorded a 5% decrease with six fewer incidents to start the year, property crimes rose 15% with 125 additional incidents reported when compared with the same time frame in 2014. The majority of this increase can be attributed to an upsurge of 58% in burglary, which is the aggregate total of housebreaks and commercial breaks, from 98 incidents for the first five months of 2014 to 155 in 2015. The upturn in burglary this year should be tempered by the fact that the 2014 totals for this property crime in Cambridge were at their lowest point in over 50 years.

May 2015

Analysis of property crime totals for the first five months of 2015 indicates a 15% increase when measured against the 2014 totals and a 3% decline below the five-year average. One of the more significant statistics for the first five months of the year was the 125% increase in the commercial burglary category. This sudden increase in commercial breaks may be part of a regional trend that emerged early in 2015. Also, there has been a 19% upswing in larceny from motor vehicles through the end of May, with 32 additional thefts from cars reported year-to-date. Notably, this increase comes after the total for this crime type in 2014 registered at 25% below the five-year average.

These are the only reports of their kind so far this year. • Official totals for 2014 put the final number of larcenies from the person at 220 incidents for the year. This was 35% below the 341 incidents reported in 2013. Part of the explanation for the large reduction in this crime type over the past year may be that a number of the more prolific thieves, particularly ones that tend to target the Harvard Square area, are currently incarcerated.

• Through the first five months of 2015, there have been 67 bicycles reported stolen citywide in Cambridge. This is 7 incidents higher than the 60 thefts reported during this time frame in 2014 (+12%) and 5 incidents below the five-year average of 72 (-7%). • Due to the record-breaking snowy and cold winter this year, our numbers were understandably low prior to May. In fact, likely because of the weather, not a single bike theft was reported in February, and only 4 were reported in March. With the turn of the weather, numbers jumped to 14 thefts in April and skyrocketed to 40 in May. In May, East Cambridge saw the most (7 incidents), followed by Peabody, Mid-Cambridge, North Cambridge and West Cambridge (each with 5). Just over 64% (43) of the 67 bicycles stolen year-to-date in 2015 were locked at the time of the thefts. • Breakdown by Neighborhood, year-to-date 2015:

Larceny of Bicycles: 4.1.15 to 6.1.15

May 2015

Bicycle thefts have risen with the warm weather, with 82% of the year’s total having occurred in the past two months. Although many were spread throughout the city, Porter Sq and the Mass Ave corridor experienced a number of thefts, accounting for 25% of the city's total during this time.

In the most recent two months of 2015, there have been 11 bike thefts in East Cambridge, with 4 taking place at the Cambridgeside Galleria. All bikes were locked at the time of the theft. Three juveniles were arrested in May for stealing bikes in two separate incidents in this neighborhood.

Harvard Sq has not reported the numbers that other parts of the city have. However the 5 bike thefts that took place all occurred in the last two weeks of May. All were locked but on the street with no particular day of the week. The few in Cambrigdeport/Riverside have been spread throughout the two months with no notable patterns.

+38% • The projected five–year weighted average for auto thefts through the first five months of 2015 is 43 incidents. With 39 thefts reported year-to-date, we are 9% below the average and 3% below the number reported during this time frame in 2014 (40). • There were eleven auto thefts reported in the past four weeks, which is up three incidents or 38% from the previous four weeks. With temperatures heating up the last few weeks, we have seen scooter and moped thefts begin to emerge and we expect that such activity will continue throughout the summer months. • Since the beginning of the year, the following neighborhoods have reported auto thefts: Cambridgeport (6), West Cambridge (5), Area 4 (4), East Cambridge (4), North Cambridge (4), Inman (4), Peabody (3), Mid Cambridge (3), Riverside (3), Agassiz (2), and Highlands (1). The larger number of auto thefts in West Cambridge is due to an auto rental company reporting vehicles that were rented and not returned in a timely fashion. • Of the 39 cars stolen thus far in 2015, 25 (64%) have been recovered to date.
