MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH MAY 2015

Up Front

In the Spring of 2012, as we were preparing for the retirement of our Senior Pastor and making plans for that transition. Dave Law came on as our “part time” Business Administrator. There was no one functioning in that position at the time. Dave dove in and took on many financial and property related functions as Josh and I took on the other aspects of ministry. Since then Dave has taken many concerns off our plate and handled them with efficiency and excellence and has been an incredible blessing to both Josh and I as well as the entire church. When Dave had been on the job for a few months he was explaining something to me, I have long forgotten the subject, but his reply well describes how Dave has blessed the church as our Business Administrator.

When Dave had been on the job for a few months he was explaining something to me, I have long forgotten the subject, but his reply well describes how Dave has blessed the church as our Business Administrator. As I recall he had resolved a property problem and I asked him how he had figured that out. He told me he loved to figure out systems, what made them work and how to make them work better. It did not matter much to him whether it was a financial system, a personnel system, a mechanical system or technology system. I would have to say that has described his time with us well. He has learned about many of the systems that make this church work and brought order to all of them. • He guided us through the upgrade of our HVAC system in the fall of 2014. •

He has kept an eye on building temperature and made adjustments to keep it comfortable.

He has discovered economies in several places, resulting in reduced expenses, making more resources available for ministry.

Eve by William Paul Young From the author of the twenty-fivemillion-copy bestseller The Shack comes a captivating new novel.. Eve is a bold, unprecedented exploration of the Creation narrative, true to the original texts and centuries of scholarship—yet with breathtaking discoveries that challenge traditional beliefs about who we are and how we’re made. Eve opens a refreshing conversation about the equality of men and women within the context of our beginnings, helping us see each other as our Creator does—complete, unique, and not constrained by cultural rules or limitations.

As The Shack awakened readers to a personal, non-religious understanding of God, Eve will free us from faulty interpretations that have corrupted human relationships since the Garden of Eden.

When a shipping container washes ashore on an island between our world and the next, John the Collector finds a young woman inside—broken, frozen, and barely alive. With the aid of Healers and Scholars, John oversees her recovery and soon discovers that her genetic code connects her to every known race. No one would guess what her survival will mean…

This book may be found on the New Book Rack in the Library. (2015, 320 pages, 4.0 out of 5 Amazon rating)

No one but Eve, Mother of the Living, who calls her “daughter” and invites her to witness the truth about her own story—indeed, the truth about us all.

He has interacted with vendors and volunteers, fire marshals and health inspectors and promptly seen their concerns were addressed.

He has projected budgeted income with amazing accuracy and managed expenses very well.

He has been the one we turn to when “There is a leak in the women’s restroom” “There is a funny noise coming from the equipment room” “The stove is clicking again”

Thoroughly researched and exquisitely written, Eve is a masterpiece that will inspire readers for generations to come. This book received mixed reviews on Amazon, let me know your thoughts after reading Eve.

“the parking lot lights are not coming on at night” “my computer is not working right” and hundreds of similar concerns over the course of the last four years.

we understand and support this decision. And we will still enjoy being able to worship together with him on Sunday morning and serve with him in the areas that God leads him to serve.

He has discovered many things about the building: timers for lights, how to lower the sanctuary chandeliers, the drain in the belfry that gets clogged and the switch that must be on to hear the night buzzer, to name just a few. I don’t think there is a square inch of the building Dave has not touched or at least seen with his eyes.

Thank you Dave, for serving with excellence, for always looking out for the best interests of this body of Christ and the building we gather in for worship, and for serving beside us as we love God, love people and serve the world. May God bless your years ahead with joy and rich times together with your family.

Dave has worked tirelessly but the time has come now for him to invest his energies more fully in his family. While we hate to see him leave this position,

We will take a few moments during the worship services on May 22 to thank Dave for his contributions.

May is here. Happy Mother’s Day! What rituals do you practice with your children, your family, your partner, and yourself? Research shows that rituals are an important part of increasing our performance, stopping procrastination, overcoming grief, and making us happier. Rituals help set us at ease, focus our attention, savor the moment, and steel our resolve. Rituals such as family dinners lead to healthier children, more engagement with families, better grades, and a stronger sense of self. Family rituals and sharing in the joy of positive accomplishments also lead to happier marriages. Rituals such as writing about our troubles help us overcome grief. Did you know that procrastination can be linked to a bad mood? A starting ritual that is fun will help put you in a good mood and overcome procrastination. Peak performance rituals that help us feel lucky will increase performance. Are you curious to find out how to add more ritual to your life? Click here to read more, and be sure to follow the links in the article for more detailed tips on each ritual category. Are you wondering if your relationship might need a tune up? We are sure hoping that April showers will bring us May flowers. Last month we were back on the playground and loving it. We also were able to celebrate early childhood through week of the young child. We hosted a “ work together” family night. Families were able to explore different areas of development through hand on activities. We finished the week with an ice cream social with our families. This month we will celebrating our talented teachers during teacher appreciate week. The theme for the week will be Celebrating Our Stars - Hollywood Week. Each day will host something fun in honor of the teachers. Spotlight Staff: Miss Rachael will celebrating her 15th year here at Children’s House. Miss Rachael joined our team in 2001, where she taught in the summer program. In the fall of 2001 she became the full time floater. In the summer of 2002 she joined the Rainbow room, where she continues to help preschoolers prepare for Kindergarten. We are so grateful for Miss Rachael and her years here at Children’s House. On-call sub, Miss Sandy, joined our team in 2003, after retiring from the state. Miss Sandy helps in every classroom, the lunch room and even the office. She is no stranger to the classes and receives many hugs from our little friends. It is very nice to have a familiar and friendly face in the classrooms when the teachers are out. We are very grateful to have Miss Sandy as apart or our team! In 2010 Miss Tian joined the toddlers in the Busy Bee room. For the past 6 years she has supported the growth and development of toddlers. Miss Tian is often known for her love of music and her dancing moves. Prior to coming to Children’s House, Miss Tian taught preschool for three years in China. We are so blessed she found us and joined our team! Judy Vlach Children’s House Director

Senior Prom Big Band Dance On April 25th, Central Baptist Church welcomed the Lincoln Land Community College Big Band for a memorable evening of music, dancing, and fun. The event was attended both by members of Central as well many from the community. The band performed many favorites including “In The Mood,” “L-O-V-E,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “Jump, Jive, And Wail.” The response to the event, the first of its kind at CBC, was overwhelmingly positive and we are likely to see the band return sometime in the near future.

Who Stole My Church Workshop

Meals for Shelters This Summer

The Worship Discernment Team invites you to join us for a discussion about the book Who Stole My Church? on Wednesday, May 25th at 5:45 PM. We will have some copies of the book available in the Serve the World Center on Tuesday, May 3rd though you can order the book on your own if you would prefer. This book has been a helpful resource and discussion starter for the Worship Discernment Team and we highly recommend you check it out and join us!

Each Wednesday Night that we meet for dinner, meals are provided to the Contact Ministries Transitional Shelter, a shelter that helps women with children develop needed skills to thrive on their own and escape the cycle of homelessness. When a month has five Wednesdays, on the fifth Wednesday, additional meals are prepared for the adult men and women's shelter, Helping Hands.

Toxic Charity Conference On April 8th and 9th, several staff and members of CBC attended the Toxic Charity Conference at Southside Christian Church. Author, Robert Lupton, was the keynote speaker and the event included several breakout sessions where attendees could network with others to discuss long term solutions to poverty in our community.

When we do not have a Wednesday Night Dinner, meals still need to provided to the shelters. We will not be serving Wednesday night meals during the months of June, July and August and need your help for those Wednesday nights. Will you, your family, your Sunday School class, or small group help feed the hungry? If you would like to help but find yourself financially challenged at this time, the benevolence budget has sufficient financial resources for this ministry. Your family or group can be reimbursed if you could prepare and deliver the meals to the shelter.  If you need more information or can help with this ministry, please contact Carol Volle (787-3192).

Liturgical Arts Festival Central Baptist Church will host two events as part of the Liturgical Arts Festival in Springfield during the first week of May. An organ concert will take place on Tuesday, May 3rd and a choral performance with full orchestra of Bach’s Mass In B Minor will take place on Saturday, May 7th. The organ concert is a free event. Choral performance tickets are $15 at the door. For more information, please call 217-787-4868 or visit springfieldchoralsociety.org.

Higher Education Scholarships

Kumler Food Pantry Thank you all for your continual and generous contributions to the Kumler Food Pantry. Food insecurity is a problem for many in our society and places like the Kumler Food Pantry do much to alleviate this problem. For the month of May we are asking you to pick up an extra can or two of fruit or vegetables when you go to the grocery or convenience store and bring them to the Serve the World Center. A can or two may not seem like much but if each of us brings a can or two it adds up!!

Over the years generous people have contributed to the higher education investment fund. Interest from those investments is then distributed to those who apply for a scholarship as they pursue a higher education degree. Additionally gifts are made by individuals or groups to provide additional resources or fund a scholarship for a specific area of study. If you are an active member of the church, we invite you to apply for a Higher Education Scholarship. Forms are available in the Welcome Center or you may contact [email protected] for an electronic copy. Completed forms are due no later than June 1, 2016 and should be returned to the church office. Due to a number of years of low returns on investments, our funds are more limited this year.

Undie Sunday The James Project is based on James I:27 and their mission is to help foster care children and foster families. A part of this is to encourage and help people become foster parents, provide homes for some of these families, provide weekly meals, etc. Closet 127 is another facet of the James Project. Closet 127 collects and distributes essential items such as clothing and bedding for foster children throughout Sangmon County. When a child enters foster care it is usually under traumatic circumstances and they often come with only the clothes on their back. For the last four years we have held an Undie Sunday in May to collect new children’s underwear for Closet 127. Our donations are needed and appreciated. This year Undie Sunday will be May 8. Please help by bringing new children’s underwear and socks for boys and girls to the Serve the World Center in early May as we continue to support the James

Summer Schedule Change May 25th will be the last Wednesday Night Dinner for this season and will suspend throughout the Summer. Please see the article “Meals For Summer Shelters” for information how you can help to serve our community during this time.

Our Condolences Our hearts and prayers go out to the following families who lost loved ones during the month of April. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers following this difficult time. • Family of Betty Pruden, Sheila Hodel’s mother.

Community Garden The garden season at the 3C Community Garden we partner with at the intersection of 3rd and Canedy has begun! Join us on Mondays and Thursdays at 5:00 PM if you would like to join in on the fun. Let Josh or Emily Sabo know if you are interested and they will get you connected.

But we do not want you to be uninformed about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve, as others do who have no hope. 1st Thessalonians 4:13
