New Active House Chairman Tad Putyra - Looking Forward Since the Active House Alliance announced in 2010 its vision of buildings that create comfortable and healthier lives for occupants without negatively impacting the climate, many other programs have now borrowed the same underlying principles. For example, the importance of daylight to circadian rhythms or the impact of fresh air on comfort and health of the homeowner. The news of third-party adoption of the Active House principles is the greatest recognition of our efforts. After all, the Active House Alliance is all about networking and knowledge sharing. The Alliance is a living platform which does not only codify rules and parameters, but above all works to inspire the design of healthy and environmentally responsible spaces. The certification of buildings serves as a confirmation of performance and the intangible but critical Active House values and principles as well. The building industry has been assessed recently by a number of think tanks as technologically and productivity antiquated lagging behind in the modern industrial world. As a part of this industry for decades and in different countries I regretfully have to admit that there is merit to this thinking. This is true for a number reasons such as fragmentation of the building process, very localized conditions and the fact that most groundbreaking ideas relate just to individual projects and are not subject to implementation on a wider scale, in direct contrast to other industries such as the automotive industry. This state of the industry affords a great opportunity for organizations like the Active House Alliance. The recent trend of joint collaboration among technologically advanced industries, designers and builders is creating a strong business case for the total modern industrialization of construction. We are finding like-minded and creative potential partners from every corner of the world. Just from my own personal experience, I’ve been impressed by Silicon Valley manufacturers of electronics, European manufacturers of robotic construction equipment, European and Asian manufacturers of building modules, and strong academic research from universities in Milan, Toronto and Copenhagen. The list continues to grow every day.

It is clear that an evolution in the construction industry is coming and the Alliance is very well positioned to fit. Our members bring unique perspectives from the worlds of academia, design and manufacturing but are unified by a clearly defined mission of delivering healthy and affordable living through technology that is both environmentally and commercially sustainable. The race is on to modernize the construction industry. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Copenhagen International School is an Active House! In the framework of the Nordic Clean Energy Week we had the pleasure to grant to the Copenhagen International School (CIS) the Active House label. Other than complying with the Active House criteria, the CIS has a unique feature which is that all its facades are equipped with PV panels covering 50% of the yearly electricity use of the school.

Active House present at the Nordic Clean Energy Week Active House took part to the Nordic Clean Energy Week, which took place in Malmo and Copenhagen from 21 to 25 May. On 23 May, Active House organized an event on smart approach to energy efficiency in buildings. The event consisted in two site visits and a panel debate on ‘smart energy efficiency’. The visits included: Guided tour to Copenhagen International School (CIS), where Cenergia & Kuben handed over the Active House label to the school for its smart use of PV panels

Visit to BLOXHUB and presentation of Research Cluster on Smart Buildings & Cities

The panel debate on Smart Energy Efficiency provided great food for thoughts and attendees heard inspiring presentations from: o Green building certifications in overview – new guide book by 3XN/GXN, presented by Lasse Lind o Active House Live – energy efficiency real-time, the smart approach by LeapCraft, Vinay Venkatramen o Business models in smart buildings & cities by Copenhagen Business School, Lara Anne Hale o Connectivity platform for smart buildings by Wandrille Henrotte, SOMFY o Challenges and facts of physics, Carsten Rode, Danish Technical University

Ukraine will host its first edition of the Active House Days

On the 23-24 June, Kiev will organise its first Active House Days, with the support of the Active House Alliance. The event will gather architects, designers, builders, developers and realtors from across the globe for an exchange of experience in implementing building projects which create optimal conditions for comfort, energy and environment. Active House Alliance joins the MOBISTYLE Consumers Advisory Board

Following the invitation of the MOBISTYLE Coordinator, Active House Alliance joined the MOBISTYLE Consumers Advisory Board (MCAB). Through its participation, Active House shall facilitate that energy conscious and healthy behaviour in buildings becomes a way of life and not only a one-time service. MOBISTYLE (MOtivating end-users Behavioural change by combined ICT based modular Information on energy use, indoor environment, health and lifeSTYLE) is a Horizon 2020 project which aims to motivate behavioural change by raising consumer awareness through the provision of attractive personalized information on user’s energy use, indoor environment and health, all enabled by an integrated information and communication technology (ICT) service. Behaviour change is achieved through awareness campaigns, which encourage users to be pro-active about their energy consumption and to simultaneously improve health and well-being.
