EDITOR’S LETTER May and its Holidays Have you ever tried to work in May with people located in Europe? Well that’s an experience I invite you to try if you ever get the chance. While we – and believe me when I say I proudly gloat when I am included in the US “we” - are working day and night at full speed towards WantedDesign and NYCxDESIGN (the official celebration of design in New York City), in Europe it’s a different story. They’re juggling between no less than four holidays in two weeks. Unfair isn’t it? Not really… truth be told, we’re the lucky ones: in the span of three weeks, we get to go from Milan to New York, switching out gelato and spritz for happy hours in NYC. What do they drink out there but coffee? No clue, I’m all mineral water and tea. Now here’s one thing you should all know: WantedDesign is finally here, and it’s that special time of the year where international brands and designers meet up in New York and create connections, plan projects and benefit from this amazing platform we’re so proud to be a part of. So please stop by, talk about it, and spread the word because with what’s cooking in Manhattan and in Brooklyn this year, you want to sit front row so you don’t miss a single part of it. Keep this newsletter in your pocket, because it’s your official survival guide to the crazy week coming up. Also make sure to visit Laufen at ICFF and check out Maison Sarah Lavoine’s first showroom in New York at the D&D Building. By the time we reach the end of the month, “we” will finally indulge in our Memorial Day weekend, probably on a beach in Miami. See European friends? No grudge at all.

KEEP AN EYE ON ...

Couleur As part of Oui Design, WantedDesign co-founders Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat present the vision of three emerging French designers: Julie Richoz, Ionna Vautrin, Pernelle Poyet and the role of color in their work. This exhibition will display a selection of pieces by these three designers, all based around an original and inspiring color palette while giving visitors an opportunity to discover three French rising talents and their sensible exploration of color, its role in the creative process and how it connects with its perception when applied to different materials and textures. The Camille Walala mural is part of Oui Design, a program initiated by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and its partner the FACE Foundation. Camille Walala Camille Walala is a purveyor of positivity, expressed through vibrant color and bold pattern. Commissioned by WantedDesign and sponsored by Industry City, French artist Walala will create a permanent six-story monolithic mural wrapping the facade of a Industry City Building 1 facing 2nd Avenue. Drawing on influences including the Memphis Movement, the Ndebele tribe and op-art master Victor Vasarely, Walala has an irrepressible enthusiasm for playful, graphic patterns that invoke a smile in all who view them. Design Schools Workshop Every May, WantedDesign brings a group of students from International design schools together to participate in the WantedDesign Design Schools Workshop. Conceived as a collaborative activity rather than a competition, teams are composed of students from different schools and backgrounds. The 2018 edition is the largest one to date with seven participating schools from around the world. The program is an important part of WantedDesign, and has been very successful in promoting the schools, fostering the creation of an international network of young designers, as well as in initiating partnerships between schools and manufacturers. The final selected designs will present their concepts to a jury of prominent design professionals at WantedDesign Manhattan on May 22nd.
