In a landmark decision, Southern California water leaders leaned in last month to invest in modernizing the state’s aging water delivery system — providing critical support to California’s backbone supply of water. The action by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) was a defining moment for our state — one we all can be proud of — and it represents the groundswell of support for this project. On behalf of millions of Southern Californians — employers, employees, union members, residents and interested customers — we embrace this truth: Our state desperately needs California WaterFix. Each and every day, more than 25 million California residents and countless businesses depend on Sierra Nevada snowmelt traveling through the SacramentoSan Joaquin Delta for 60 percent of their water supply, which is captured, delivered and stored through the State Water Project. And, increasingly, our state’s water supply is threatened by climate change and the realities of boom or bust cycles. California WaterFix will upgrade a key section of the state’s water infrastructure and delivery system by constructing two tunnels to move water supplies underneath the fragile Delta ecosystem rather than through it. Developed over nearly a decade of extensive review and study by a wide range of experts, California WaterFix has long been held up as the best alternative for ensuring a reliable, high-quality water supply. It’s an obvious win for all Californians, our economy and the environment.

A recent poll by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) found that 78 percent of Californians think California WaterFix is important for the future quality of life and economic vitality of the state. The poll yielded strong results from regions throughout the state, including in Los Angeles, where 86 percent of residents said California WaterFix is somewhat/very important. With such overwhelming public support, we think the path forward should be plain and clear. Let’s build California WaterFix and secure our water future. We stand behind California WaterFix, collectively representing vastly diverse and prominent interests, from labor and business to public agencies, nonprofits and agriculture. For more than a decade, we have rallied behind efforts to find a cost-effective, long-term solution that addresses the state’s water supply and delivery challenges. California WaterFix is the best and most affordable long-term solution for securing a reliable and efficient water delivery system. We support a diverse portfolio of water supplies in our local communities and region. But without California WaterFix, we’re abandoning our most affordable water supply and sticking ratepayers with an uncertain and costly future. To be sure, California WaterFix represents a game changer in ensuring the quality of life for Californians, as well as a thriving economy. We must continue to forge ahead in our pursuits with all of the knowledge and confidence that we have today, knowing that we are making California’s future brighter and more secure. Sincerely,
