MENTORING PROGRAMME For PhD students in life sciences What For ? •In life sciences (biology, health science), the proportion of female students is quite high. This field is considered « accessible » to young women who are not « afraid » of their ability. •However, over the years leading to a PhD, young women tend to develop a lack of self-confidence with respect to their professional ability and question their professional future considerably •There is an overall lack of support to encourage young women to progress and value their professional capacity – to discuss personal and professional issues •Overall there are few female role models in science •There is a real need for programmes to encourage, support and guide

MENTORING PROGRAMME Why and How? Mentoring programmes are meant to advise mentees with respect to their career path, to think about perspectives and choices together with experienced mentors, which can serve as guides to exchange, question, counsel, guide and encourage. •The mentor can explain « how the system functions », the « know-how » •The mentor can provide the mentee with useful and essential information for her formal training •The mentor can advise on strategies which are important for her career path and professional development. Strategies include « formal rules » and more personal suggestions, based on the mentor’s experience •The mentor can introduce the mentee into scientific and academic networks and explain the importance of establishing professional contact networks •The mentor can discuss issues at the interface between personal and professional spheres – how the balance personal life and career

MENTORING PROGRAMME Objectives and Rules Mentoring can only be developed on a sound basis of trust and respect •The mentor and mentee have to get to know each other and define their needs and objectives together. •Individual meetings between mentor and mentee can be scheduled to discuss specific issues or more general strategies. Based on his/her experience, the mentor will be able to counsel, guide, support and encourage the mentee. •The mentor will be able to help the mentee think about choices and perspectives so as to balance personal life with professional development. •Workshops can be organized to coach a group of mentees

INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS Mentors and mentees can meet and discuss in an informal fashion concerning specific issues.

The mentor will provide advice based on his/her own experience and know-how of the system.

GROUP MEETINGS « Lunch Meetings » allow a group of mentees and mentors to meet regularly, to get to know one another and exchange in a climate of trust and commun interest
