rainer Ian Wilkes believes he knows where McCraken's wheelhouse lies. He knows what race conditions are needed to get the best out of the multiple graded stakes-winning son of Ghostzapper, and he has identified the areas the 4-yearold needs to improve upon if the endgame is a Breeders' Cup victory beneath the Twin Spires this November. What Wilkes hasn't been able to do in recent weeks is find a spot in a condition book he thinks is most suited to the bay colt's top attributes. So in the name of keeping a path to progress in motion, he's calling upon some of McCraken's back class this week. When Whitham Thoroughbreds homebred McCraken made his seasonal bow in May, Wilkes said the main 2018 objective for the colt would be the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Churchill Downs with a mix of races around eight furlongs on the path to November. With time ticking on the second half of the year, however, and only two seasonal starts under McCraken's belt, Wilkes is going back to stretching McCraken out in the 1 1/8-mile, $300,000 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3) July 6 at Prairie Meadows. "The deal is, he's only had two races this year. We got started late this year and there are no other races right now," Wilkes said of BLOODHORSE DAILY

"My horse needs racing. He needs to get a little better, he needs to improve, and I think he will. I think he is improving." McCraken actually is well-versed at handling a route. Irish Freedom won going 1 1/8-miles in an allowance test at Churchill June 2 and was second in last year's Native Diver Stakes (G3). The Cornhusker is joined on the Friday card by the $250,000 Iowa Derby and $100,000 Iowa Sprint Handicap, and Wilkes will be represented in those tests as well. Fort Peck, who broke his maiden at Churchill May 12, takes on the likes of graded stakes winner The Tabulator and Cox-trained stakes winner High North in the Iowa Derby going 1 1/16-miles, while his stablemate Done Deal will head into the Iowa Sprint Handicap having dead-heated for the win going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Churchill May 18, his first start following nearly a two-year layoff. "Done Deal, how can you not be happy with this horse coming off a two-year layoff?" Wilkes said. "He's a fast horse and we're stepping up in class, but he's a fun horse. He works like a nice horse. I'm happy with all three of them." BH

COACHING CLUB AMERICAN OAKS NEXT FOR MONOMOY GIRL By Bob Ehalt

ack in May, Sol Kumin became the first owner since Calumet Farm in 1952 to win the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) and the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) in the same year. Now, in the coming weeks, Kumin could become the first owner to win the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), Alabama Stakes (G1) and Travers Stakes (G1) with three different horses during the same Saratoga Race Course meet. The 43-year-old founder of Folger Hill Asset Management said the nation's top-ranked 3-yearold filly, Monomoy Girl, is expected to run July 22 in the 1 1/8-mile Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga, but added that the Kentucky Oaks winner will most likely bypass the 1 1/4-mile Alabama Aug. 18 at the Spa. "She'll run in the Oaks, but we'll probably skip the Alabama because of the distance," said Kumin, who owns the daughter of Tapizar under the banner of Monomoy Stables in a partnership with Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group, and Bethlehem Stables. Trained by Brad Cox, Monomoy Girl is undefeated in 2018 after reeling off victories in the Acorn Stakes (G1), Kentucky Oaks, Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1), and Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2). In her absence, Midnight Bisou will be pointed toward the $600,000 Alabama. Kumin's Madaket Stables acquired a share of Midnight Bisou from Allen Racing and Bloom

Racing Stable after the 3-year-old filly finished third in the Kentucky Oaks. Transferred to trainer Steve Asmussen, Midnight Bisou romped by six lengths in the June 30 Mother Goose Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park in her first start for new connections. "She turned in a huge effort in the Mother Goose and she will run next in the Alabama. The distance will be fine for her," Kumin said. Kumin mentioned the Sept. 22 Cotillion Stakes (G1) at Parx Racing as a possible spot for a showdown between his two fillies. As for the final leg of the trifecta, Kumin also owns a share of Triple Crown winner Justify, who is the leading candidate for the Aug. 25 Travers Stakes. In addition, he is a member of the partnerships that own Catholic Boy and My Boy Jack, who might also be Travers candidates, depending on their performances in the July 7 Belmont Derby Invitational (G1T). MARYLAND MOVES RACING SECRETARY HALE TO NEW ROLE (continued from page 10) As Maryland horsemen heard about the change, they expressed concern over what they might mean. Trainer Katy Voss said that with Hale, who galloped horses for Voss in the early 1980s, the Maryland industry has been moving in a direction that is friendlier to those who seek to breed and develop younger horses. "There are a lot of opportunities where you can protect your horse and get your money out," she said. "That's moving the game in the right direction." Trainer Phil Schoenthal praised Hale's ability to adjust on the fly. "She's one of the people around here that lets common sense prevail as opposed to 'that's what it's always been' or 'that's what the book says,'" said trainer Phil Schoenthal, who has been training in Maryland since 2003. "For that reason, I've always enjoyed working with her." Trainer Ferris Allen, who has been based in Maryland for nearly 40 years, called Hale "an iconic member of the Maryland racing community." He added, "I think I speak for my colleagues in saying we hold her in the highest esteem. She is certainly as good as any racing secretary that I've worked with." Hale has also served for three decades as the racing secretary at the Timonium race meet at the Maryland State Fair. That meet is scheduled August 24 through September 3, and sources told The Racing Biz that Hale is expected to continue as racing secretary for the meet. "She is one of the gems of Maryland racing," Schoenthal said. "She has been one of the backbones and the spine of this place for a long time." BH

MACHMER HALL AWARDED BONUS AFTER SO PERFECT'S WIN By Ron Mitchell t @BH_RMitchell

o Perfect's victory in the Grangecon Stud Stakes (G3) at the Curragh in Ireland July 1 yielded a windfall for breeder Machmer Hall Farm. As a result of the 2-year-old Scat Daddy filly's win, Machmer Hall will receive a $5,000 bonus from Keeneland as part of its September Sale Bonus Program initiated in 2017. Under the program, a bonus is awarded the seller of a horse that wins a grade 1, 2, or 3 stakes as a 2- or 3-year-old. So Perfect's bonus was the first to trigger the incentive. Produced from the winning Songandaprayer mare Hopeoverexperience, So Perfect was purchased by M.V. Magnier for $400,000 from Select Sales' consignment last year and has won two of four starts. The filly races for the Coolmore Stud connections of Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier, and Michael Tabor.

"I am thrilled the filly has done so well and getting a bonus is great," said Machmer Hall's Carrie Brogden, adding that it helps offset the increase in Keeneland commissions that began at the same time as the bonus scheme. "It's more money to pay the commissions and entry fees. I really appreciate the bonus, but I am concerned about the hike in commissions." Brogden and her husband Craig and mother Sandy Willwerth operate Machmer Hall and Carrie Brogden is a partner in Select Sales, along with Andrew Cary. “To breed a horse that rises to the top and wins a graded stakes in the U.S. or anywhere in the world is quite an accomplishment,” said Bob Elliston, vice president of racing and sales at Keeneland. “Machmer Hall raises good horses at all levels and it’s an honor for them to be the first out of the gate.” Elliston said any bonus program for this year's September sale would be announced later this week when the sales company details its sales format for the yearling sale and the November Breeding Stock Sale. Thankfully that's been proved right." Appleby is also likely to run his 2016 winner

Hawkbill, who won the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) at Meydan in March and got his career back on track with a respectable third in the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot after a poor run in the Coronation Cup (G1). He said: "He's very much on the radar for the Eclipse and it'll be discussed over the next 48 hours. He's a past winner of the race and coming back to ten furlongs in the Prince of Wales's after that disappointing run in the Coronation Cup didn't worry him too much. "We changed things around and put blinkers on him there, and we were pleased with his run behind two good horses. We felt he should be left in, and he doesn't look out of place." AQUIS FARM ANNOUNCES BREEDING BONUS FOR THE MISSION By Andrew Eddy/racing.com

quis Farm has ensured breeders will keep their freshman stallion The Mission in mind this spring after announcing a range of rich bonuses for progeny conceived in 2018. An AU$1,000,000 (US$735,447) bonus is on offer for sons and daughters of The Mission conceived this spring to win a group 1 2-year-old race or the Magic Millions Classic with a sliding scale of bonuses to be paid for The Mission's progeny during their juvenile season. The Mission, who last year won the Champagne Stakes (G1) at Randwick, has been retired to stud at Aquis' Canungra Stud in Queensland for a fee of AU$13,200 ($9,707). According to the sliding scale, progeny of The Mission conceived in 2018 can earn a AU$500,000 ($367,724) bonus for a group 2 win, and AU$300,000 ($220,634) for a group 3, AU$250,000 ($220,634) for listed race success right down to an AU$25,000 ($18,386) payment for any 2-year-old success during the juvenile season. Aquis chief executive Shane McGrath said the scheme shows Aquis' continued support to the

Australian Thoroughbred racing and breeding industries as it will also donate 10% of all bonus payouts to industry-related charities. "It is important to acknowledge that we in the racing industry are all part of a wider community and we have an obligation to look after those less fortunate than ourselves," McGrath said. "At Aquis we are grateful to be part of a thriving industry that is in a position to give generously to those in need, whether that be improving services within our local community, supporting our farmers in times of drought, helping to improve support networks for stud and stable staff, or ensuring that our much-loved racehorses are given the opportunity to be re-trained and re-homed once they retire from racing." Trained by Al Stall Jr., C Z Rocket didn't race at 2, but has shown promise from the start since winning his career debut by two lengths Sept. 1 at Saratoga Race Course. He followed through his conditions, winning a first-level allowance race at the Keeneland fall meet before taking a second-level allowance race at Churchill in November, when he earned an ESF of 105 for that effort. Off that race, Stall entered C Z Rocket in the Malibu Stakes (G1), where he contended early before fading to sixth. This season C Z Rocket made his 4-yearold debut June 1 when he finished third in an allowance-optional claiming race at Churchill. After that race, in which he also earned a 105 ESF, Stall worked C Z Rocket a halfmile on both June 15 and 23 to have him ready for Saturday's top run. "I have to give credit to Al and his staff for really bringing along this horse," said jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, who has been aboard for both of this year's races. "I think he probably needed his last race and came into (Saturday) in great shape. We sat a great trip behind the speed and really closed strongly late." BH

hile Page McKenney settled for second place in the $100,000 Philip H. Iselin Stakes (G3) June 30 at Monmouth Park, that outcome was good enough to vault the 8-year-old veteran to the top in the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship series. In his MATCH series debut, David Jacobson's Harlan Punch secured a clear lead early in the field of four and rolled to a 5 1/4-length score, completing the 1 1/16-mile test in 1:44.53. While Harlan Punch earned 10 MATCH series points with the win, Page McKenney earned 7 points when he overcame some bumping to finish second. Page McKenney, who picked up 10 points when he won the May 26 Salvator Mile Stakes (G3) at Monmouth, also moved to the top of the 3-Year-Old and Up Long Dirt Division. Mary Eppler, who trains Page McKenney for Adam Staple and Jalin Stable, said the hard-knocking gelding, who won the grade III Salvator Mile to kick off the MATCH Series division, came out of the Iselin in good order. She said the third race in the division July 29, the $150,000 Monmouth Cup (G3), is on the radar. July 7 will mark a busy day for the MATCH series, which will offer three races. Parx Racing will welcome the both the 3-Year-Old and Up Sprint Turf Division, when runners line up for the $200,000 Parx Dash Stakes (G3T); and the 3-Year-Old and Up Fillies and Mares Sprint Turf Division, in the $100,000 Turf Amazon Stakes. Both races will be contested at five furlongs.

iven the long-term domination of major European classic distance events by the offspring of Galileo, it's easy to forget that Galileo's sire, Sadler's Wells, had another exceptional stallion son in Montjeu. Born two years earlier than Galileo, Montjeu was, in his best form, the superior runner of the two. Montjeu, who died at the relatively early age of 16, was also an exceptional sire, particularly of middledistance colts. Although they have had their moments. none of his first major sons to stud in Europe— Motivator, Hurricane Run, Authorized, and Pour Moi—have proved to be consistent top-class sires. The weekend, however, brought hope that the Montjeu line may yet have a worthy Northern Hemisphere representative in the shape of Camelot. A foal of 2009, Camelot came closer to capturing the elusive English Triple Crown than any horse since Nijinsky II achieved that feat in 1970. Undefeated in

two starts at 2, the second of which came in the 2011 Racing Post Trophy (G1), Camelot opened his 3-yearold campaign with a neck victory in the 2012 QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (G1). His reputation rose to new heights after a five-length victory over Main Sequence—subsequently the champion turf horse and champion older horse in the United States in 2014—in the second leg, the Investec Epsom Derby (G1). Less impressive on desperately heavy ground in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1), Camelot was still odds-on to complete the Triple Crown sequence in the Ladbrokes St. Leger (G1), but after being denied an opening at a crucial moment, could not produce the same kind of acceleration at an extended 1 3/4 miles as he had at shorter distances, and fell threequarters of a length of catching longshot Encke for the win. Sent out for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) three weeks later, Camelot was dispatched as favorite, but finished a well-beaten seventh behind Solemia, probably unsuited for the heavy going. Although he'd undergone major colic surgery just a few days after the Arc, Camelot returned to the fray at 4. The year started well

enough with a bloodless victory in the High Chaparral European Breeders Fund Mooresbridge Stakes (G3), but in the Tattersalls Gold Cup (G1), he was decisively outfinished by the much-improved 5-year-old Al Kazeem. Given a chance to reverse that form, Camelot finished fourth to Al Kazeem in the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1), after which he was retired. Although he'd lost some of the luster he enjoyed at the height of his racing career, Camelot made considerable steps back towards the limelight when his first runners reached the track last year. Seventy-nine of a first crop of 150 Camelot foals faced the starter at 2, with 20 of them winning. They were headed by the Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte (G2) captor Fighting Irish, and Alounak, a black-type winner in Germany, with three others earning placed black-type, a bright start for a horse not expected to sire precocious juveniles. This year has seen four new group winners in Wait Forever, successful in the Premio Parioli (the group 3 Italian Two Thousand Guineas) and Premio Pisa; Hunting Horn, who took the Hampton Court Stakes (G3) at Royal Ascot; Pollara, successful in the Prix du Royaumont (G3); and Latrobe, who captured the June 30 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1). Camelot also already has Arthur Kitt, winner of the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, in his second crop of 2-year-olds. Latrobe's classic victory was his first stakes score in a five-race career. He'd won a maiden over the Irish Derby course and distance by 6 1/2 lengths on his previous start, and in his other two outings this year, was beaten a neck by Hunting Horn in a maiden, and finished second in the Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes (G3). Latrobe is out of Question Times, a daughter of the Giant's Causeway horse Shamardal, who is now emerging as a very good young broodmare sire. She BLOODHORSE DAILY

was a six-furlong winner who also finished second in the listed European Breeders' Fund Bosra Sham Fillies' Stakes, and also appears as dam of the Fastnet Rock mare Diamond Fields, winner of the Gladness Stakes (G3) in Ireland, and also graded stakes-placed in the U.S. The second dam of Latrobe, Forever Times was a durable sprinter by So Factual who won six of 51 races. In addition to Question Times, she is dam of Sunday Times, a Holy Roman Emperor daughter who took the Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes (G3) and ran second in the Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes (G1). Latrobe's third dam, Simply Times—by Mr. Prospector's son, Dodge—was imported from the U.S. to England, where she ran unplaced in two starts. She did better as a broodmare, as her other offspring included group 2-winning and group 1-placed Welsh Emperor and listed scorer Majestic Times. The family goes back to Marchinha, an Argentine black-type winner and classic placed runner, who was imported to Florida in the late 1960s. Latrobe follows Pollara, whose dam is by Storm Cat himself, as the second group winner for Camelot out of a Storm Cat, and Arthur Kitt has a second dam by Storm Cat son, Tale of the Cat, this trio coming from only eight starters by Camelot out of mares carrying Storm Cat.
