MEDIA ALERT - Phnom Penh, 16 July 2014 CCHR and OHCHR to host Post-UPR National Consultation and Advocacy Workshop

On 17 – 18 July 2014, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) will jointly host a National Consultation on Cambodia’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) and Advocacy Workshop (the National Consultation), which aims to raise awareness of the UPR process within Cambodian civil society and among other stakeholders. Moreover, the National Consultation aims to ensure systematic advocacy for implementation of the UPR recommendations over the coming years. The means of monitoring Government implementation of these recommendations will also be discussed. The Human Rights Council (the HRC) convened in June 2014 for its 26th session, during which it formally adopted the Outcome Report of Cambodia’s UPR. At the HRC meeting, the Royal Government of Cambodia (the “RGC”) decided to accept 163 recommendations and take note of the 42 remaining recommendations. The National Consultation will take place over two days. The first day will involve brief presentations on the UPR process and on the recommendations submitted by UN Member States to Cambodia. The second day will focus on developing advocacy strategies in order to help civil society organizations (CSOs) play a stronger role in following-up on and monitoring the implementation of the recommendations; finally, CSOs will discuss how to provide necessary assistance to the RGC in this implementation process.
