FACT SHEET & BOILER PLATE WHO: The Everglades Foundation is a 501(c)3 based in south Florida, founded in 1993 by a group of local outdoor enthusiasts after an algae bloom broke out in Florida Bay. Currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, The Everglades Foundation is one of Florida’s most influential environmental organizations, spearheading Everglades restoration efforts. WHAT: The Everglades Foundation makes strides towards restoration through Science, Education, Advocacy and Innovation. The Foundation has 8 Ph.D’s on staff, conducting world-class research in water quality, economic, hydrology, wetland ecology and engineering. Their research drives the policy and advocacy efforts of the foundation, while inspiring the education nd innovation program. WHERE: The Everglades Foundation is located in Palmetto Bay, just south of Miami, and within short driving distance to Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. Since its founding in 1993 by a group of local outdoor enthusiasts, the Foundation has become a respected and important advocate for the sustainability of one of the world’s most unique ecosystems.

THE FOUNDATION’S PROGRAMS KEY INITIATIVES The Everglades Literacy Program A comprehensive K-12 Framework that offers students the opportunity to explore, experiment and enjoy learning about the world that surrounds them. The Literacy Program has the curriculum implemented in 20 Florida School districts and trained over 2,300 teachers throughout the state. The George Barley Water Prize The Barley Prize is a global initiative, tapping into science and innovation around the world. Offering $10 million to the person or team that can cost-effectively extract phosphorus from freshwater bodies around the globe, the Barley Prize has attracted over 104 teams from 13 different countries, and narrowed down the competition to 9 final teams. Advocacy The Everglades Foundation brings together consituents and legislative officials to create an open discussion on the importance of Evergaldes restoration. Through legislative strategy, the Foundation stands as a leading influence in Florida’s environmental community.
