Background The New Inchcolm Hotel and Suites is a heritage-listed, distinctly boutique hotel of clandestine character, influenced in every way by its incredibly rich history. A distinctive place to stay for people of discernment, with truly unique offerings. In the 1880s, leading army surgeon and Colonel Dr John Thomson built his home on the site where The New Inchcolm Hotel and Suites stands today. He named his residence Inchcolm after Scotland’s Inchcolm Island. Dr Thomson served his community well. He was an accomplished doctor, scientist, astronomer, psychologist, pioneering photographer and Masonic Chairman. He was also one of the founders of the University of Queensland and a founder of St John’s Ambulance.

His wife, Mrs John Thomson, was quite the socialite and Dr Thomson, very much a ‘socialite husband’. The building that is home to The New Inchcolm Hotel and Suites was built during the glamorous 1920s era. It replaced Dr Thomson’s home and private medical practice and was originally built to house the rooms of a number of medical specialists. It became part of the prestigious Spring Hill medical district. In 1997, the building was purchased by local real estate personality Peter Flynn who was actually born in the building. His vision to create a New York style boutique hotel saw The Inchcolm Hotel open its doors in 1998. Rekindling this vision in 2014, The New Inchcolm Hotel and Suites undertook a major refurbishment and expansion.

Inspired by the 1920s glamour and sophistication reflected in the neo-Georgian building frontage, and the socialite lifestyle of the famous Dr Thomson and his wife, this eclectic glamour has been brought to life once again. The original building was built at an enchanting time in our history, the heyday of Art Deco, and early interior design which featured exotic touches from the Orient, Africa and Egypt. These influences are seen in the geometric and angular shapes, silky oak, chrome, glass, shiny fabrics, mirrors and mirror tiles. A style to suit lavish cocktail parties and royal patrons.

The New Inchcolm Hotel and Suites offers guests a memorable hotel with stories to tell. One that is warm, comfortable and intimate and where the service is welcoming and personalised. It has also earned the prestige of becoming Brisbane’s first MGallery property. This worldwide collection of unique hotels invites travellers to enjoy stays full of discovery, history, design and character. See for yourself the revitalised and re-imagined luxury of the hotel you thought you knew.

The building’s neo-Georgian features have been carefully protected and modern touches have been introduced. The end result is the perfect blend of modern elegance and thoughtful luxury.
