It should be noted that the seasonally adjusted series are partially based on past data from the quarterly labour force survey, so these series may change in the future after they are fully replaced by series based on the monthly labour force survey.

In June 2017:



Unemployment rate among persons aged 15 and over from the labour force – 4.5% (same as in May 2017).



Participation rate in the labour force among persons aged 15 and over – 64.1% (same as in May 2017).



Employment rate (the percentage of employed persons out of the total population) among persons aged 15 and over – 61.2% (compared with 61.3% in May 2017)

In the 2nd quarter of 2017 (April-June):



Unemployment rate among persons aged 15 and over from the labour force – 4.4% (compared with 4.3% in the 1st quarter of 2017).



Participation rate in the labour force among persons aged 15 and over – 64.1% (compared with 64.0% in the 1st quarter of 2017).



Employment rate among persons aged 15 and over – 61.2% (same as in the 1st quarter of 2017).



Unemployment rate among persons aged 25-64 from the labour force – 3.9% (compared with 3.7 % in the 1st quarter of 2017).



Participation rate in the labour force among persons aged 25-64 – 79.9% (compared with 80.0% in the 1st quarter of 2017).



Employment rate among persons aged 25-64 – 76.8% (compared with 77.0% in the 1st quarter of 2017).



The share of employed persons usually working full time out of total employed persons – 78.6% (compared with 78.4% in the 1st quarter of 2017).

The Labour Force Survey is the main source of information regarding the labour force in Israel, and is conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics on an ongoing basis. In 2017, an average of 20,044 persons aged 15 and over a month has been interviewed on an ongoing basis. The survey population includes the permanent population of Israel, as well as tourists and temporary residents living in Israel continuously for one year or more. The survey follows the development of the labour force in Israel, its size and characteristics, the extent of unemployment, etc.

June 2017 (Seasonally Adjusted Data) In June 2017, the number of persons in the labour force among persons aged 15 and over was 3.994 million. Of these, 3.816 million were employed and 178,000 were unemployed. Among employed persons, 2.023 million were males (compared with 2.019 in May 2017) and 1.793 million were females (compared with 1.794 million in May 2017). The participation rate among persons aged 15 and over in the labour force in June 2017 reached to 64.1% (same as in May 2017). Among males aged 15 and over (see Diagram 3), that rate declined to 69.2% (compared with 69.4% in May 2017), and among females aged 15 and over reached to 59.1% (same as in May 2017). The unemployment rate among persons aged 15 and over from the labour force (see Diagram 1), reached to 4.5% in June (same as in May 2017). The unemployment rate of males aged 15 and over (see Diagram 2) declined to 4.3% (compared with 4.5% in the previous month), whereas among females aged 15 and over it increased to 4.7% (compared with 4.5% in the previous month). The employment rate (calculated as the percentage of employed persons out of the entire population) among persons aged 15 and over declined to 61.2% in June 2017 (compared with 61.3% in May 2017). The employment rate among males aged 15 and over (see Diagram 4) declined to 66.2% (compared with 66.3% in the previous month), and that of females aged 15 and over reached to 56.4% (same as in the previous month).

2nd Quarter Average (April-June) 2017 (Seasonally Adjusted Data) In the 2nd quarter of 2017, the number of persons in the labour force among persons aged 15 and over was 3.944 million. Of these, 3.811 million were employed and 177,000 were unemployed. Among the employed persons, 2.018 million were males (compared with 2.003 million in the 1st quarter of 2017) and 1.793 million were females (compared with 1.791 million in the 1st quarter of 2017). The participation rate among persons aged 15 and over in the labour force in the 2nd quarter of 2017 rose to 64.1% (compared with 64.0% in the 1st quarter of 2017). Among males aged 15 and over, that rate rose to 69.3% (compared with 69.0% in the previous quarter), whereas among females aged 15 and over that rate declined to 59.1% (compared with 59.2% in the previous quarter). The unemployment rate among persons aged 15 and over from the labour force, rose to 4.4% in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (compared with 4.3% in the 1st quarter of 2017). The unemployment rate of males aged 15 and over rose to 4.4% (compared with 4.2% in the previous quarter), whereas that of females aged 15 and over rose to 4.5% (compared with 4.4% in the previous quarter). Among persons aged 25-64 the participation rate in the labour force declined to 79.9% in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (compared with 80.0% in the 1st quarter of 2017). Among males aged 25-64 the rate rose to 85.3% (compared with 85.1% in the previous quarter), whereas among females aged 25-64 the rate declined to 74.7% (compared with 75.0% in the previous quarter). Among persons aged 25-64 the unemployment rate from the labour force rose to 3.9% in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (compared with 3.7% in the 1st quarter of 2017). Among males aged 25-64 the unemployment rate rose to 4.0% (compared with 3.8% in the previous quarter) whereas among females aged 25-64 the unemployment rate rose to 3.8% (compared with 3.7% in the previous quarter). The number of employed persons in the 2nd quarter of 2017 reached 3.811 million (compared with 3.794 million in the 1st quarter of 2017). The number of employed persons who usually worked full time (35 hours and over per week) rose by 0.8% compared with the 1st quarter of 2017 (an increase of approximately 23,000 employed persons), whereas the number of employed persons who usually worked part time (less than 35 hours per week) declined by 0.6% compared with the 1st quarter of 2017 (a decrease of approximately 5,000 employed persons). The share of those usually employed full time of all employed persons rose to 78.6% (compared with 78.4% in the previous quarter). Among males that share rose to 87.4% (compared with 87.3% in the previous quarter) and among females it rose to 68.8% (compared with 68.5% in the previous quarter). The number of persons who worked full time (35 hours and over) in the determinant week declined by 0.2%, compared with the 1st quarter of 2017 (a decrease of approximately 5,000 employed persons), whereas the number of persons who worked part time (less than 35 hours) in the determinant week rose by 3.6%, compared with the 1th quarter of 2017 (an increase of approximately

35,000 employed persons). The number of persons temporarily absent from work in the determinant week rose in the 2nd quarter of 2017 by 14.8%, compared with the 1st quarter of 2017 (an increase of approximately 36,000 employed persons). The employment rate (calculated as the percentage of employed persons out of the entire population) among persons aged 15 and over reached to 61.2% in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (same as in the 1st quarter of 2017). The employment rate among males aged 15 and over rose to 66.3% (compared with 66.1% in the previous quarter), whereas the employment rate among females aged 15 and over declined to 56.4% (compared with 56.6% in the previous quarter). Among persons aged 25-64 the employment rate declined to 76.8% (compared with 77.0% in the previous quarter). Among males aged 25-64 the employment rate reached to 81.9% (same as in the previous quarter), and among females aged 25-64 the employment rate declined to 71.9% (compared with 72.3% in the previous quarter). The average weekly number of work hours per employed person declined to 36.1 in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (compared with 36.5 hours in the previous quarter). The number of employees working part time involuntarily (i.e., those who searched for full-time or additional work but did not find it) rose approximately 93,000 in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (an increase of 7.9% compared with the previous quarter), and their share out of all employed persons rose to 2.4% (compared with 2.3% in the previous quarter). The share of males working part time involuntarily, out of all employed males, rose to 1.4% (compared with 1.3% in the previous quarter), and the share of females working part time involuntarily, out of all employed females, rose to 3.6% (compared with 3.4% in the previous quarter). Labour Force Characteristics by District of Residence (Detailed figures can be found in Tables 1.11-1.16 in the "Labour Force Survey Quarterly – Labour Force and Wages Statistics" on the website). The unemployment rate among persons aged 15 and over in the 2nd quarter of 2017 compared with the 1st quarter of 2017 rose in most of the districts : 5.5% in the Jerusalem District (compared with 5.3%), 6.2% in the Northern District (compared with 5.6%), 4.8% in the Haifa District (compared with 4.9%), 3.6% in the Central District (compared with 3.5%), 3.8% in the Tel Aviv District (compared with 3.3%), 4.5% in the Southern District (compared with 4.7%).

The participation rate among persons aged 15 and over in the labour force declined in most of the districts in the 2nd quarter of 2017 compared with the 1st quarter of 2017. The participation rate reached 56.2% in the Jerusalem District (compared with 54.8%), 58.2% in the Northern District (compared with 57.3%), 62.7% in the Haifa District (same as in the previous quarter), 69.6% in the Central District (compared with 70.2%), 68.9% in the Tel Aviv District (compared with 69.5%), and 62.1% in the Southern District (compared with 62.9%). The employment rate among persons aged 15 and over declined in most of the districts in the 2nd quarter of 2017 compared with the 1st quarter of 2017. The employment rate reached 53.1% in the Jerusalem District (compared with 51.9%), 54.5% in the Northern District (compared with 54.1%), 59.7% in the Haifa District (same as in the previous quarter), 67.1% in the Central District (compared with 67.7%), 66.3% in the Tel Aviv District (compared with 67.2%), and 59.3% in the Southern District (compared with 59.9%).

Employed Persons by Industry (By the new classification of All Economic Activities (Updated edition), Technical Publication no. 80) (Detailed figures can be found in Tables 2.1 and 2.5 in the "Labour Force Survey Quarterly – Labour Force and Wages Statistics" on the website). In the 2nd quarter of 2017 the number of employed persons increased by approximately 73,000 compared with the 1st quarter of 2013. The number of employees in the 2nd quarter of 2013 reached 3.351 million (compared with 3.324 million in the 1st quarter of 2017). Table 1 below presents the number of employed persons and employees by industry in the 2nd quarter of 2017 and 1st quarter of 2017. Among employed persons, the greatest increases were in Local, public and defence Administration and social security (approximately 8,000 employed persons), Professional, scientific and technical activities (approximately 7,000 employed persons), Administrative and support service activities and Other service activities (approximately 5,000 employed persons in each industry), and Information and communication (approximately 4,000 employed persons). The greatest decreases were in Manufacturing; Mining and quarrying and Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles (approximately 9,000 employed persons in each industry), Arts, entertainment and recreation (approximately 6,000 employed persons), Real estate activities (approximately 5,000 employed persons), and Human health and social work activities (approximately 4,000 employed persons).

Employed Persons by Occupation (By the new classification of Occupations, Technical Publication no. 81) (Detailed figures can be found in Tables 2.10 and 2.14 in the "Labour Force Survey Quarterly – Labour Force and Wages Statistics" on the website). Table 2 below presents the number of employed persons and employees by occupation in the 2nd quarter of 2017 and in the 1st quarter of 2017. Among employed persons, the greatest increases were among Professionals (approximately 27,000 employed persons), Elementary occupation (11,000 employed persons) and Clerical support workers (approximately 7,000 employed persons). The greatest decreases were in Managers (approximately 11,000 employed persons), Practical engineers,

technicians,

agents

and

associate

professionals

and

Skilled

workers

in

manufacturing and construction, and other skilled workers (approximately 5,000 employed persons in each occupation). Among employees, the greatest increases were in Professionals (approximately 30,000 employees) and Elementary occupation (approximately 11,000 employees) and Clerical support workers (approximately 7,000 employees). The greatest decreases were in Managers and Skilled workers in manufacturing and construction, and other skilled workers (approximately 7,000 employed persons in each occupation).
