UMDNJ-University Hospital among Top Hospitals for Cardiology, Orthopedic and Urology Outcomes Ranks Among Top 10 Academic Medical Centers in the U.S.

atients treated at UMDNJ-University Hospital for conditions related to cardiology, orthopedics and urology receive some of the best care in the nation as measured by the likelihood that they will survive their illnesses, according to newly released rankings. The data, from the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), place the hospital among the top 10 academic medical centers in the nation in each of these areas. UHC is an association of 106 academic medical centers in the U.S. and assists hospitals with enhancing their quality improvement methods. “We are proud to have several of our clinical programs ranked among the top 10 academic medical centers in the United States,” said Vincent Barba, MD, FACP, FHM, Medical Director for Quality Improvement at UMDNJ-University Hospital and UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS).

Barba is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine. He adds, “It exemplifies our commitment to obtaining the best possible outcomes for our patients.” According to the ratings, UMDNJ-University

A. The facility is a wellness center located on the campus of UMDNJ and operated by the YMCA of Newark and Vicinity (Downtown YMCA). Q. Where is the Center located?

A. On the campus of UMDNJ, on the second floor of the Doctors’ Office Center (DOC), 90 Bergen Street, Newark. Q. Is parking available?

A. Parking is available on the street and in campus parking garages for a fee. Q. What is the facility layout?

A. The 7,400 square feet facility includes men’s and women’s locker/shower rooms, spinning room, strength and cardio equipment, aerobics area with spring loaded floor, and lounge area. Q. What type of equipment will be available?

A. State-of-the-art equipment from Life Fitness, Concept II and Intex Strength will include approximately 60 strength and cardiovascular machines, plus a spinning room with Startrac Spin Pro bikes. Q. What programs will be offered?

A. The Center will offer group classes including Yoga, Zumba, Step, Boot Camp, kick-boxing and Spin, as well as group exercise classes, i.e. aerobic, stretch, body sculpt and abs. Fitness testing and initial evaluations will be available at no additional fee. Q. What are the operating hours of the facility?

Specifically, the hospital’s cardiology survival rates (expected compared to actual) ranked number two for the period July 2008-June 2009. This achievement was led by Marc Klapholz, MD, FACC, Chief of Cardiology at UMDNJ-University Hospital and Professor of Medicine at UMDNJ-NJMS. UMDNJ-University Hospital’s orthopedics program, which specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, was ranked fifth in terms of actual survival outcomes. This program is headed by Joseph Benevenia, M.D., Chief of Orthopedics at UMDNJ-University Hospital and Professor and Chief of Orthopedics at UMDNJ-NJMS. In addition, the urology program at UMDNJ-University Hospital garnered the hospital a

sixth place ranking when compared to the nation’s more than 100 academic medical centers’ urology programs. Mark L. Jordan, M.D., FACS, Chief of Urology at UMDNJ-University Hospital, and Harris L. Willits Professor and Chief, Division of Urology, UMDNJNJMS, championed this achievement. “These are achievements that we are certainly proud of,” concluded Barba. “We are committed to providing the best care for our patients at UMDNJ-University Hospital.”
