Triteq

Travis Wentworth: the Triteq Young Entrepreneur Award-Winner 2017 Member’s News Triteq Ever thought about learning a language but couldn’t find a teacher or a class near you? Well, you can with new online platform, Langu, set up by Travis Wentworth, who won our Young Entrepreneur Award 2017. Langu is a virtual language learning platform that simply and easily connects those wanting to learn a language with independent language teachers for live, one-to-one lessons in their own virtual classroom.

What language would you like to learn? Do a simple search and Langu connects you with the very best language teachers from around the world. As Travis says, “the beauty of the site is that you can find a teacher to suit your individual needs – whether it’s learning a language for university, travelling, or for your career. What’s more, Langu means you can learn a language anywhere – in your local café, at home, or on the train to and from work – with a good internet connection”. Research shows that if you study the same material, whether it’s French verbs or Spanish grammar, in a different place each day it makes you remember information better: our brain is forced to create new associations with the same material and then it becomes a stronger memory! Travis came to Oxford to do a master’s degree in migration studies. While there he met Agnieszka Nowicka, who was doing a degree in Applied

Linguistics. They later moved to London and when he was going to meet her family for the first time and wanted to learn a bit of Polish to impress the in-laws. He looked online but drew a blank and it was then that he came up with the idea for Langu. He founded Langu with Agnieszka (see photo with CTO, Patryk Zajdler, right) as a better, more accessible way to teach and learn languages. Travis says: “There are so many great teachers out there but students struggle to find them. Our idea was to create a market place where students can type in the language they want to learn and choose the right teacher for them, based on criteria like background, price, availability and reviews.“ He adds: “It took a while to pull it all together but investment in the technical build and money to pay a salary was the trigger for us to work full-time on developing Langu.”

Travis’ aim is to make education more accessible to everyone and he hopes Langu will help him achieve that goal. Setting up your own startup can be a lonely road and Travis says it is the support of organisations like The Oxford Trust that have given him access to networks that have helped him on his journey. Winning the Young Entrepreneur Award this year has given him the boost he needed and Langu is now part of Ignite – the UK’s leading accelerator supporting tech businesses.

One of these knowledge providers is the Thoracic Surgery Team at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham, who flagged a particular issue with assessing chest wall motion in CF Patients. “It wasn’t a solution we came up with and then tried to find a problem for,” explains Dr Christopher Golby (Managing Director at Evolyst). “We knew there was a problem and we went away to try to find technology that could solve the problem, and then came up with this solution.” Evolyst worked closely with the Heartlands team to develop a low-cost portable imaging system which CF patients can use in their own home.

Clinicians usually measure respiratory function in CF Patients with spirometry tools, which don’t provide information about the movement of the chest. As CF patients, in particular, tend to breathe from their diaphragm rather than their chest wall, this missing data could give healthcare providers important information about the quality of the patient’s breathing, which can be improved through physiotherapy. In order to track the progress of this physiotherapy, CF Patients are monitored in-hospital every six months, which is particularly burdensome as they must, due to the nature of the condition, be kept in isolation from other CF Patients.

Clinicians usually measure

What next? Travis says:“I want to grow the business steadily over the next few months, especially in the UK and Polish markets where we have good connections. Then it’s another round of investment to scale-up and market Langu all round Europe.” The world is his oyster and the Trust is happy to have played a part in cracking it open. Good luck, Travis! Find out more here.

Evolyst Using the same camera technology as Xbox, where each pixel also gives a depth measurement, our imaging tool can produce a 3D model of the patient’s torso, allowing healthcare providers to monitor respiratory motion over time. Our solution is extremely low-cost: only £5,000 per patient - a stark contrast to the current £45,000 per year, per patient, cost to the NHS. Furthermore, the improvement to the patient’s quality of life is significant. The life expectancy of CF patients is increasing exponentially - by a whopping thirty years in the last forty. Over time, our one-off solution could save the patient hundreds of hospital visits, not to mention the significant savings to the NHS. Evolyst’s founding principle is a desire to take solutions from research to reality.

When we initially announced the development of their Chest Wall Motion Assessment tool, it drew quite a bit of attention from people who wanted to test and to validate the system. Unfortunately, we were faced with an old problem - a lack of the necessary funding to give the project the dedicated attention required to bring the prototype to a state in which it can be tested, validated, and eventually rolled out to patients across Europe. And while the CWMA system is initially offered as a solution for CF patients, it could provide clinical insight on a wide range of respiratory diseases, improving countless patients’ lives. The winners of this year’s EIT Health European Health Catapult will be decided at the December 2017 EIT Health Summit in London, where we will be pitching our solution to the panel. www.eithealth.eu

Medilink UK have partnered with foreign exchange and payment solutions experts, moneycorp, to offer our members special terms and great foreign exchange rates customised in-line with their requirements. Exclusive offering for Medilink UK members Ten tips for managing foreign exchange risk For companies trading internationally, fluctuating exchange rates can be difficult to manage and hard to budget for. If the markets move against you it can erode or even eliminate profits and in a time of tighter margins and increasing raw materials costs it is ever more important to protect yourself from exchange rate risk and make savings wherever possible. Our partner moneycorp put in place some proactive steps towards managing foreign exchange risk for your business, whilst leaving the market analysis and interpretation to the experts.

1. Plan for risk Planning is the first step to managing your FX risk. Agreeing on a budgeted exchange rate for the year will guide your transactions. Your budgeted rate should take into account the volume and timing of your expected transactions as well as a realistic assumption of current and future rates. An FX specialist can help to define this rate by analysing past trends. Planning ahead will help protect your business from foreign exchange risk and enable you to benefit from any exchange rate movements which are in your favour. This could make a huge difference to your bottom line. 2. Understand your business objectives

Develop a foreign exchange policy and review it regularly It is important that your policy complies with and works towards overall strategy and objectives. Once agreed, a policy should be reviewed regularly and be flexible enough to reflect the constantly changing nature of the markets. 4. The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) is one of the largest acute and community, specialist service providers in the West Midlands, providing its services from New Cross Hospital, West Park Hospital, Cannock Chase Hospital and more than 20 community sites. Trajan Scientific and Medical (Trajan) has been working closely with the pathology department at New Cross Hospital to improve performance of bone marrow trephine (BMT) biopsy testing.

Bone marrow diagnostic tests are usually undertaken for cancers that are most likely to affect the bone marrow, such as lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma, anemia, amyloidosis, and pancytopenia. Glyn Woodward, Quality Lead at RWT’s New Cross Hospital, has been working in histopathology for more than 40 years, and is familiar with the challenges associated with processing BMT biopsy specimens. An ongoing challenge for New Cross Hospital has been a higher than normal test repeat rate on BMT cases, due to tissue lifting off microscope slides during processing.

Trajan supplied specialized adhesive microscope slides for review in BMT cases by New Cross Hospital. The initial verification and validation exercise as part of the laboratory’s ISO 15189 compliance showed Trajan Series 3 adhesive microscope slides dramatically increased the retention of BMT tissue sections on test slides. With minimal failure and repeat rates, using Trajan slides provide fast turnaround time for patient results. For further details please read the full testimonial.
