WEST MIDLANDS

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF REPRESENTING THE REGION'S HEALTHCARE & TECHNOLOGY SECTOR IN THIS ISSUE:

• BREXIT: TAKE PART IN OUR SURVEY

• GET IN TOUCH: WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU: IS THERE SOMETHING AFFECTING YOUR BUSINESS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS?

WELCOME TO MEDILINK 15 years and still growing ...

A

s we move forwards following the vote to leave the European Union, I am struck by the various commentaries that speak either of the dire consequences we shall all face or of the golden opportunities we will all soon embrace. For my part, I am neither clever enough nor stupid enough to state which future will come to pass; however, one thing I am sure of is that the small businesses we support have always had to face significant challenges in order to survive, thrive and prosper and so for me, whether the ultimate outcome of Brexit is generally seen to be positive or negative, it will, by and large be simply business as usual for our companies, who will tackle any crisis with the same bravery, diligence and sheer bloody-mindedness as they always have, and will embrace each opportunity with the same responsive, innovative and open-minded approach as they always have. And Medilink WM will continue to support them all – just as we always have ... well, for the last 15 years at least.

But what lies behind these and many other of our quantitative statistics? What are the qualitative achievements that came from each one of these statistics? Truth is we don’t really know – not all of it anyway. We can only track so much because our engagement, our input, is simply absorbed into the ongoing business activity of the companies we help. We can tell you how many jobs we know we have helped to create under a given programme of work, or how many companies the programme helped to start, but we know these are not the measures by which businesses value us. What our businesses value most is that we understand them and their needs and so they know that any and all engagements and interactions with us are relevant to them specifically. They value the knowledge that we only act in their best interests and so they listen to us, confident that we only provide information worthy of their attention. They value the fact that we bridge the gap and translate the business benefits of the plethora of support initiatives extant from time to time.

We are 15 years old this year and the infographic on the following pages details some of our quantitative achievements during those 15 years of operation. I am biased of course, but I can’t help but be both impressed and immensely proud of key statistics such as:

And they know that whatever consequences or opportunities should befall them post Brexit, Medilink WM will continue to do our utmost to expertly support them.

Almost 18,000 businesses engaged with, encompassing over a million interactions with them. Over 700 topical, sector-specific events held welcoming over 7,000 attendees. Over 6,000 link ups made – that’s 6,000 organisations introduced directly to each other because we became aware of a commercial reason for them to engage.

Richard Stone, Chief Executive

What our businesses value most is that we understand them and their needs and so they know that any and all engagements and interactions with us are relevant to them specifically.

How has Brexit affected your business? On Thursday 23 June, in a referendum which saw the turnout of more than 30 million people, the UK voted to leave the EU. Since then, Britain has got a new Prime Minister, who has assured us that the result of the referendum will be respected, and that "Brexit means Brexit". As a representative body for industry, we want to know how this decision has affected your business and trade so that we can support your views and interests.

POLYFLON TECH

Polyflon Technology Ltd

NEW STARTER TO DRIVE MEDICAL BUSINESS

Polyflon Technology Ltd was incorporated as a family enterprise in January 1990 by Mr Francis Pedley (Managing Director) whose experience in the processing and marketing of luoropolymers both in the UK, Germany and United States spans some 45 years. The company is still owned and directed by the Pedley family together with a close team of professional administrators, technically driven sales engineers and dedicated production technicians.

Medilink member Polyflon Technology Ltd, a Staffordshire based high performance polymer company, has announced a new addition to their growing team.

LIZ OXLEY – MARKETING COORDINATOR It’s fantastic to work so closely with such a specialist team and I’m looking forward to delivering campaigns that go the heart of Polyflon’s key message: in-depth material knowledge, first rate production environment, state-of-the-art processing equipment, rigorous attention to quality and components that meet or exceed customer expectation”.

The decision to appoint Liz Oxley to head up marketing activities comes alongside a drive to develop Polyflon’s growing medical device tubing component business. Liz, with over 10 years B2B marketing experience, will develop Polyflon’s marketing strategy aimed at the UK and EU medical device sectors. Class 7 Cleanroom Production of Tip-Formed Tubing With a Class 7 cleanroom based production facility focused on the manufacture of precision

thermoformed, micro-moulded and machined medical tube tips for single use minimally invasive devices and surgical instruments, Liz will concentrate on communicating Polyflon’s high quality in-house processing capabilities and finished components. Liz’s appointment precedes the decision to install an additional Class 7 cleanroom, planned for 2017, as a result of increased customer demand and the need to accommodate a broader range of production methods. Further investment in forming/moulding equipment is also envisaged, strengthening Polyflon’s position as a trusted UK sub-contract medical tube component manufacturer.

As a company we pride ourselves on offering finished tubing components produced from the highest quality materials; manufactured using world class processing technologies, all assured by a company-wide culture of intrinsic respect for detailed quality at all stages of product realisation. LIVING WELL TAKING CONTROL – the key to diabetes prevention?

Since March 2013 Birmingham-based social enterprise Health Exchange CIC and Devon-based charity Westbank Community Health and Care have been running an evaluated diabetes education and support programme called Living Well Taking Control. For three years prior to that Health Exchange had been delivering the programme to people both at risk of developing, or recently diagnosed with, Type 2 diabetes, learning from experience and identifying the key elements that could help. With a proven track record in demonstrator sites, the programme has helped to inform the evidence base underpinning the new Healthier You: the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, which has commenced its roll out in England this year. Health Exchange and Westbank have now formed a partnership organisation, also called Living Well Taking Control (LWTC), and won contracts to deliver the programme in six of 27 ‘first wave’ areas participating in the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention

Sue Turton, programme lead for Living Well Taking Control

We are working to improve understanding and increase confidence, which can empower and motivate people to take control of their health. We know it can be difficult, but we have a proven track record of success with supporting those at risk to make healthier choices about how they exercise and what they eat – and ultimately to avoid developing Type 2 diabetes.”

THE E-HEALTH REVOLUTION IS HERE

EXPLORING THE CHANGING FACE

of healthcare and medical device development

Sales of smartphones hit record highs in 2014 and the market continues to grow rapidly. Many have attributed this to the use of health and fitness monitoring apps by both consumers and patients. High profile trials of Apple's HealthKit monitoring platform are already underway in both Stanford and Duke University Hospitals in the US to ascertain the benefits of transparency in patient data. Here, Neil Oliver, technical marketing manager at Accutronics, explores the changing face of healthcare and medical device development.

Neil Oliver, Technical Marketing Manager at Accutronics

The total number of mobile phones sold globally reached 1.8bn in 2014, of which over 1.2bn consisted solely of smartphone sales. This is according to reports by research firm Gartner Inc. which also showed that Apple recently overtook Samsung to become the highest grossing mobile vendor in history.

Advances in medical monitoring are revolutionising healthcare.

... Until now there has been no concerted effort to bring about industry-wide standardisation across disciplines, departments and institutions ...

It's interesting then, to note that the next step in innovation has seen the global electronics giant target the medical sector with its HealthKit platform. Specifically designed to provide better use of patient data, the app ecosystem will tap into the wealth of information generated from health monitoring apps on smartphones, smartwatches and other portable and wearable fitness devices. This is an exciting time for the industry, reminiscent of the early days of aviation or the Internet, during which anything seemed possible.

So what is it that Apple, along with the likes of Google, IBM and Microsoft, all exploring their own health platforms, sees in the medical industry? To understand the reasons behind this trend it's important to look at how we currently approach healthcare. As born survivors, it's human nature to put off going to the doctor. When we do eventually make a trip, the doctor has a finite amount of time available, often with very limited background data at hand, to make an accurate diagnosis and to prescribe effective medication or treatment plans. This reactive approach has been the norm for as long as modern healthcare has existed. Patients with long term chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease are already familiar with regular self-monitoring and treatment. Read more ...
