CVCC Family and Friends, Our summer months are flying by, and we’ve had a lot of excitement! The students have had several fun activities including an ice cream social and a karaoke contest. At the end of June, we were honored to host the Atlanta Braves tryout camp on Howard Lake Field. CVCC also hosted the annual Public Safety Breakfast for the Phenix City Russell County Chamber. It was wonderful to see so many community people from both sides of the river honoring our area public safety professionals. Speaking of community, I’m very excited about the current United Way summer campaign, “Stuff the Bus.” What a wonderful opportunity for us to help support local children through the simple act of donating school supplies. Organizations all over the Chattahoochee Valley have committed to helping collect these basic supplies to give to area schools. Remember, our CVCC donations will benefit schools in Phenix City and Russell County – our primary service areas. You can find a full list of supplies needed on the back page of this publication. Let’s keep serving our students and our community!

Sincerely,

Valerie A. Richardson Dr. Valerie A. Richardson CVCC Interim President

Meet the PIT Crew! George Steiner (left) and Troy Peterson (right) are here to help you solve all your technology problems! Ok, maybe not all of them, but they are the triage center for all of your CVCC tech issues. The PIT Crew work using a ticket system to help identify your technology issue, and then they work to solve the problem. The main issues they help students with include: login issues with Pirate Web, Piratemail, and Blackboard. George and Troy offer the following suggestion to all students, “Write down your passwords and remember the defaults are different for each of the logins. Some people will try to use the same login for Pirate Web and Piratemail, but those defaults are different.” They also remind students that when you contact PIT Crew for help – leave contact information. When you email them from a non-CVCC address, they may not know that BeachGirl91 is actually Jane Smith. The PIT Crew will NEVER ask you for your SSN or your birthdate, so please don’t offer that information, EVER! The PIT Crew not only benefits current students, but also students like George and Troy who are currently studying in the CIS department. PIT Crew works as an internship, and can also be an eligible work study opportunity. Troy plans to finish at CVCC, transfer to CSU and continue working towards becoming a software engineer. George also wants to continue his education beyond CVCC and pursue a career in management with an emphasis in IT system adminisitration.

The PIT Crew is located in IPAC 205 334.214.4804 or email [email protected]

Student Government Association Learn about your 2015-16 SGA leadership!

Chase Woods, President

Homeschooled by his mother from preschool through high school, Chase is a lover of pizza and chocolate chip cookie dough, and he can’t wait to lead his peers as the SGA President. He has attended CVCC for four semesters, and this is his first time ever joining a student organization. His favorite study spot is the CVCC Library, and he said that “SGA gives the students a voice allowing them to express how we should improve the College.” Chase is an avid Auburn fan, and he hopes to transfer to Auburn after CVCC to study animal science, ultimately earn a doctor of veterinary medicine.

Jacob Colquitt, Executive VP Jacob came to CVCC from Smiths Station High School. When he isn’t studying at Starbucks or enjoying his comfort food of spaghetti, he is working hard in one of his many leadership roles. His roles in high school have prepared him to be the next SGA Executive Vice President. Jacob plans to continue his education and earn a MSN degree so that he can become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Jacob joined SGA at CVCC because “it’s a great opportunity for anyone to show or gain leadership qualities.” When asked about his Pirate Pride, Jacob said, “CVCC is a great school with an excellent location. Everyone on campus is super friendly, which makes it altogether distingusihed and special.”

Andrea Boynton, VP of Admin Andrea, also from Smiths Station, has always enjoyed helping others and making them feel welcome. Those traits are exactly why she’ll be a great VP of Administration for SGA. It’s fitting that her favorite song lyric is from the band Fun, “may your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground.” Andrea sees SGA at CVCC as a way “to help everyone to know of and be aware of CVCC and all that it has to offer.” She and Chase share their love for pizza and chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Her favorite study spot on campus is also the CVCC Library. Andrea plans to study horticulture after her time at CVCC.

Tiffany Gibson, VP of Finance Tiffany is our third Smiths Station graduate involved in SGA’s leadership. She plans to transfer to Troy where she will study elementary education. She said, “I joined SGA because I enjoy being part of a community.” She sees the role of SGA as listening to the student body and helping other students to become leaders. Unlike her peers, she goes to hot wings for her comfort. Tiffany enjoys studying in her room, but her guilty pleasure is to rewatch the show Gossip Girl over and over. She has Pirate Pride because, “CVCC is a close-knit family; the faculty is helpful, and the school is all-around great!”

Enrolling Now: On Board Math Prep! “I was placed in MTH 092 and was able to use On Board to help me test out and get into MTH 100. The program was made where you can work at your own pace. There were examples to help you. The tutors in the math lab were outstanding also. I think the program really helped me excel in my course. My final grade was an A in MTH 100.” - Haiven Acker

“I’ve been out of school for more than 20 years, and I was able to hop right back into it through On Board. I was able to directly transition into the MTH 100 class. I’ve made A’s on the first two tests that we’ve taken so far.” - Chris Jenkins

On Board Math Prep is a free program offered through the Math Tutoring Center. It is a component of CVCC’s Quality Enhancement Plan, Factor in Your Future: Making Math a Priority from the Start. On Board Math Prep helps students: • Build confidence in math skills • Improve attitude toward math • Possibly test out and move up a level in math • Excel in math class!
