London and Ford cleaning up their act ELECTRIC VEHICLES DELIVER CLEANER AIR IN MAJOR CITIES WORDS CHRISTINA WEDGWOOD PHOTOGRAPHY SOURCED

Big cities, with their concentrated populations and traffic congestion, are a source of significant air pollution, but we’re loving seeing companies like Ford Motor Company take initiatives to alleviate or improve the problem. According to the latest research, commercial vehicles make 280,000 trips a day in London, covering a total of 8 million miles. In fact, vans make up 75% of the peak commercial traffic, with more than 7,000 vehicles an hour on the road in the city centre alone. Joining forces with Transport for London, Ford are launching a project that will see select London businesses

trial 20 new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Ford Transit Custom vans over 12 months. Running solely on electric power for the majority of city trips, the vans will reduce local emissions and offer enhanced productivity. Ideal for urban deliveries and maintenance work, the plug-in hybrid Transit Custom vans will be provided to a range of commercial fleets across different industries in central London to explore how these vehicles can contribute to cleaner air targets, while boosting productivity in busy urban working environments. The vans will be charged with electricity for zero emission trips, and will be fitted with an efficient on-board combustion engine for extended range when longer trips are necessary. An accompanying telematics system will collect data on the financial, operational and environmental performance of the vehicles, enabling


the benefits of electrified vehicles to be further optimised. The initiative forms an important part of Ford’s commitment to working with major cities to tackle their local transportation challenges and help people and goods move more freely. Ford have been vocal in their mission to lead the market in building electrified vehicles and are focusing on their areas of strength first, by electrifying their most popular, high volume commercial vehicles, trucks, SUVs and performance vehicles. Ford have plans in place to release 13 new global electrified models in the next five years, including a fully electric SUV, and a hybrid version of the iconic Ford Mustang. The Transit Custom plug-in hybrid is planned for commercial production in 2019 and is set to be the first plug-in hybrid technology in this segment of the market.

Legrand (HPM) - A brief history GETTING TO KNOW ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S FAVOURITE BRANDS WORDS HAYDIN MARTIN PHOTOGRAPHY SOURCED Established in the 1930s, HPM grew from a dynamic husband and wife duo into one of Australasia’s largest innovators of electrical supplies. An industry pioneer, HPM was integral to the development of the Australian and New Zealand electrical industries and the safe accessibility of electricity in millions of homes across both nations. In February 2007, HPM was acquired by the Legrand Group for the second and final time, setting a new course in the history of the brand.

Now a part of Legrand’s extensive global network, HPM and Legrand products are an everday item in many electricians’ toolkits and are trusted by the trade, having been installed in Kiwi homes for decades. With such a rich history of innovation and achievement we, at Ideal, thought it would be interesting to see how the brand we all know came to be in 2017. Here’s a quick snapshot of HPM and Legrand’s history.

HPM wins a contract to make plugs and inlets for Sunbeam. This was the first time HPM made electrical plugs as we know them today. Jean Vespieren and Edouard Decoster takeover management of Legrand and 400 employees, focusing exclusively on the production of electrical installation wiring devices.

1868

1930s

Frederic Legrand and Mr Betoulle buy a porcelain factory. They call their company Legrand.


1940s HPM was formed in Sydney by Doris and Berthold Herrman. After founding a successful button moulding company in the 20s, the entrepreneurial couple bought a cantankerous, old plastic moulding machine, striking market success with knobs for radio sets. Legrand starts manufacturing switches in addition to tableware.

FEATURE

HPM experiments with new and exciting advertising campaigns designed to relate to the Australian culture and the swinging sixties, cementing HPM as an iconic Australian brand. Legrand set-up first subsidiary outside of France: Belgium.

1950s

1960s HPM starts making plugs and sockets under the HPM brand for the first time. The first catalogue contained 6 items, and All-way Rockers switches were all the rage. Legrand introduces the Mistral and Chambord ranges. At this time catalogue numbers were only 3 digits in length.

1970s Peter Simon, a German immigrant, electrical engineer, and Doris and Berthold Herrman’s son-in-law, becomes Managing Director of HPM. He leads the company to the forefront of the industry.

The Legrand Group acquires HPM, with more than 130,000 catalogue items, a commercial presence in more than 70 countries, sales in over 180 countries, and more than 33,000 employees.

owned Legrand Group for the first time. However, the then foreign minister, Paul Keating, vetoes the sale. He declares it is in Australia’s best interest to keep HPM Australian. Legrand purchases BTicino – Italy’s number one manufacturer of electrical accessories. Growth by acquisition is one of Legrand’s key strategies.

1990s

2010 Arteor is launched: the single largest range of its kind in Australia and New Zealand.

2007

HPM wins multiple design awards for new products developed by its Sydney based engineering team: the fanlight, an exhaust fan and ceiling light combined in one unit; the Cat 90 plug, a re-wireable plug top, and the super dimmer. Legrand purchases Australian emergency lighting manufacturer, Minitronics

2011 The next generation of the iconic HPM range, Excel Life, is launched under the Legrand brand, becoming an instant success. 2012 The new HPM Legrand 23,000m2 super site in Prestons, south western Sydney, is opened by Premier Barry O’Farrell, including a manufacturing facility. 2014 The HPM and Legrand USB charging modules make the prestigious list of Good Design Award finalists. We’re often asked what the best lamp is for different uses and spaces, especially with the popularity of LEDs, which offer more variations of colour temperature. The most popular options are Warm White, Cool White and Daylight, which are defined by their measure of Kelvins; the higher the number, the whiter the light. They all add a different mood to a space, so let’s take a look at what you might best recommend each lamp for. WARM WHITE Offers between 2700-3500 Kelvins and is perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere in those places where you want to chill out. Its yellow (or sometimes slightly orangey) tone is similar to the colour temperature of traditional incandescent bulbs. Best used in: •

Meet Danielle Morris: designer, creator and lighting lover DANIELLE IN THE SPOTLIGHT WORDS CHRISTINA WEDGWOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BRETT LEES

Exclusive to Ideal, Irish brand Robus Lighting has become somewhat of a household name, representing quality and attention to detail with their range of commercial, residential, and retail light fittings.

Their focus on high performance LEDs, and the integration of new technologies for energy savings and functionality, make the brand a popular choice with Ideal customers. Also somewhat of a household name in the industry is Danielle Morris, Ideal’s National Sales Manager for Robus Lighting. Part of the Ideal family since earlier this year, Danielle has more than 15 years of experience in the industry, and a reputation that precedes her. From studying Art Design and Spatial Design, Danielle developed a passion for lighting and the way that it allows her to be a mix of both creative and technical. Danielle’s career has spanned both the architectural and wholesale sides of the industry, and both the low and high ends of the market. Danielle took her initial foundation in lighting design and built upon that. She’d always wanted to do her own thing, so teamed up with a number of other designers and started doing fitouts. Operating predominantly in the hospitality space, Danielle loved the clients who 42 LIVEWIRE 4TH SEPT - 30TH OCT 2017

wanted to stand out and be a bit different, so she started designing and creating a range of locally-built, custom fittings. One of them – the ‘whisk’ – was exceptionally popular and can still be seen in a number of spaces around town. Describing herself as very tactile, Danielle was self-taught, and hands-on throughout the entire design process. “I was always experimenting with materials – mostly timber veneer, acrylic and small amounts of metal,” Danielle explains. “I built lots at home, but I always made sure that I was in the factory at each stage of the manufacturing process too, learning how things happened. It was important to me that I know the limitations of different materials, so that I could talk to clients and design things that were realistic and able to be built.” While Danielle has largely put her own venture aside so that she can throw her energy into her role with Ideal, and a jewellery range she’s working on with her teenage daughter, she loves that she’s able to bring all the best aspects of her experiences together.

Help floods in COMMUNITY SPIRIT AND KIWI KINDNESS COMES TO THE RESCUE WORDS JO BAILEY PHOTOGRAPHY STEVEN BAKER

Following the disaterous floods that hit the town of Edgecumbe in April, when floodwaters broke through a Rangtitaki River stopbank, Ideal was on the ground to offer support.

When kiwifruit packhouse and coolstore operation EastPack held a Fun Day at its Edgecumbe site to raise money for staff badly affected by the floodwaters that swamped the town in April, Ideal was happy to do its bit to help. EastPack site manager, Calum Spankie says his staff and others at the Fun Day were delighted to see Ideal’s Mount Maunganui representative Steve Grunsell turn up with a barbecue trailer in tow along with a mountain of sausages and bread to raise some funds. “With over 200 people on site there were a few mouths to feed. We really appreciated Steve’s time behind the barbecue and all the food provided by Ideal. It was great for staff to see that our suppliers are willing to help out their cause.” EastPack’s Edgecumbe packhouse narrowly escaped the flooding, however around 25 of the 260 staff members working for the firm at the peak of the kiwifruit harvest were badly impacted on a personal level.

“We are still providing emotional support to several staff who will be affected for quite some time. It will be several months before their homes are repaired or rebuilt,” says Calum. Following EastPack’s initial disaster response (ensuring displaced staff were safe and had places to stay) the firm’s eight sites in Northland and Bay of Plenty pulled together to start a company-wide fundraising initiative. All of the $33,000 raised has gone directly to helping affected staff members get back on their feet. Around $600 of this was obtained through the barbecue and a raffle for a remote control helicopter that was also donated by Ideal. EastPack’s EDI Supervisor, Hine Araroa was the lucky winner. Ideal’s Mount Maunganui branch manager, Steve Baker says his team was pleased to help. “It was the least we could do for a very good customer based in a town struck by disaster.”
