FESTIVAL AMBASSADOR Karen Zeccola We are delighted to welcome Karen Zeccola as the ambassador for this year’s Apia Young at Heart Film Festival. Having been part of the Palace Cinemas world for more than 40 years, Karen has dedicated her life to the cinema business from early on. Learning about the industry from scratch, Karen started her career in the ’70s at the stunning but now lost Padua Theatre in Brunswick, Victoria. Back then, she was the one standing behind the counter,

selling movie tickets. Together with her husband Antonio (founder and Executive Chairman of Palace Cinemas) she travels annually to Cannes and Venice to source films and find hidden gems for Palace’s knowledgeable audience. Her great passion for design and architecture also led Karen to play a pivotal role in the design and refurbishment of various cinemas including Palace Centro and Barracks Cinemas in Brisbane and the new art deco style auditoria at Palace Balwyn Cinema in Melbourne. “I am really excited about our program and think our senior patrons will love it. One of my favourite picks for this year is Chappaquiddick!” – Karen Zeccola 4

Mortimer portrays Florence Green, a widow who sets her grief aside to open the first bookshop in Hardborough. By exposing the sheltered local townsfolk to the best literature of the day, Florence opens their eyes and brings about a cultural awakening to the town. She finds an unlikely ally in Mr Brundish (Nighy), but this mini revolution also brings her fierce enemies, including Mrs Gamart (Clarkson), a self-interested civic leader. AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE DIRECTOR: JOHN CURRAN CAST: JASON CLARKE, KATE MARA, ED HELMS, BRUCE DERN 2017 | 107 MIN | USA, SWEDEN | DRAMA | M

CHAPPAQUIDDICK Director John Curran paints a vivid picture of the first few hours following the infamous 1969 incident when Senator Ted Kennedy accidentally drove off a bridge, resulting in the death of campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne. Among the most morally murky episodes in the late 20thcentury US politics was Kopechne’s death in what would become known as the Chappaquiddick Incident. The Kennedy dynasty had lost three heirs apparent by 1969, leaving Ted the family’s last hope to carry their name into the upper echelons of US politics. After the tragedy, the more profound malfeasance begins, when a battalion of spin-doctors gets to work on the cover-up, using the Apollo 11 moon landing as a distraction. DIRECTOR: PAUL DAMIEN WILLIAMS 2017 | 97 MIN | AUSTRALIA | DOCUMENTARY ENGLISH, GUMATJ & GäLPU (ENG SUBS) | PG

GURRUMUL A soaring, evocative audio-visual journey into the life, culture and landscapes of one of Australia’s most beloved singers – Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. Blind from birth, he found his identity through song and the haunting voice that has already become legend. His debut album introduced Australia to the songlines and culture of his Elcho Island community, but he found himself increasingly torn between city and country, present and past, self and the community to which he owed so much. Co-produced by Gurrumul himself, the film uses the tools of his music – chord, melody, song – and the sounds of the land to craft an audio-first cinematic experience of beauty and power. DIRECTOR: RICHARD LINKLATER CAST: STEVE CARELL, BRYAN CRANSTON, LAURENCE FISHBURNE 2017 | 125 MIN | USA | COMEDY/DRAMA | M

LAST FLAG FLYING From Oscar nominated director Richard Linklater (Boyhood) comes this funny yet heartbreaking buddy road movie, in which three aging Vietnam War veterans—soft-spoken Doc (Steve Carell), fast-talking Sal (Bryan Cranston), and sober Mueller (Laurence Fishburne)—reunite for a different kind of mission: the burial of Doc’s only child, who has been killed in the Iraq War. As this trio of old friends makes its way up the East coast, Linklater gives us a rich rendering of friendship, a grand mosaic of common life in the USA, and a striking meditation on the passage of time and the nature of truth. A great movie from one of America’s finest filmmakers. WINNER: Audience Award, Virginia Film Festival 2017 OFFICIAL SELECTION: Headline Gala, BFI London Film Festival 2017 11

LBJ Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men) directs a magnificent Woody Harrelson as the legendary and controversial Texas politician Lyndon B. Johnson, who succeeded the assassinated John F. Kennedy as President of the United States and unexpectedly helped usher in a new era of civil rights. LBJ shows Johnson confronting the challenge of leading a nation still grieving its beloved JFK, even as he grapples with urgent calls for social justice led by Martin Luther King Jr. At the same time, Senator Robert Kennedy pushes Johnson to prove he is worthy of his new role. Lacking President Kennedy's charm and his elected mandate, Johnson must prove himself through sheer force of will.

DIRECTOR: DOMINIC COOKE CAST: SAOIRSE RONAN, BILLY HOWLE, EMILY WATSON, SAMUEL WEST 2017 | 110 MIN | UK | DRAMA | M

ON CHESIL BEACH Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Billy Howle star as Florence and Edward, a young couple on their honeymoon at the English seaside in this adaptation of Ian McEwan’s (Atonement) acclaimed novel. It is 1962, and overcast. Florence is a disciplined violinist, raised in a cold vice of middle-class repression. Edward offers Florence some promise of freedom. He was raised in the countryside and found liberation in literature and ideas. The two arrive at a Chesil Beach guesthouse in love and ready to begin their life together, but hopelessly ill-equipped for their first night. Adapted for the screen by McEwan himself, this is a beautifully precise anatomy of thwarted desire.

SEA DREAMING GIRLS Funne – le ragazze che sognavano il mare One day, in the tiny Italian mountain village of Daone, a group of gregarious grannies led by chain-smoking, forthright Erminia, quietly and lovely Jolanda, and wry pragmatist Armida begin planning a trip in honour of their Rododendro club’s 20th anniversary. They quickly agree on a trip to the sea, where many of their dearest members have never ventured. But how will they raise enough money so that everyone can wiggle their toes in the surf? Like Calendar Girls (2013) Italian-style, director Katia Bernardi captures this inspiring tale of women on the verge of a grand adventure—underscoring that dreams never age and age must never restrict dreaming. A Star is Born

LEADING LADIES

W

hen six-time Academy Award nominee Dame Maggie Smith was born in 1934, 26-year-old Bette Davis was causing a stir as the vicious Mildred Rogers in Of Human Bondage, a role refused by many actresses who feared playing someone so unsympathetic. When she was overlooked for an Oscar nomination, the scandal led to an overhaul of the Academy’s voting procedure. Meanwhile, 12-year-old vaudeville performer Frances Ethel Gumm had just become Judy Garland and was a mere 4 years away from travelling the immortal yellow brick road to Oz. We are celebrating these trailblazing, great dames whose talent, wit and charisma have set cinema screens alight over the last century. The films selected all earned their stars Academy Award nominations, with Bette Davis chewing the scenery as middle-aged Broadway star Margo Channing in the sharply comedic  All About Eve  (1950), Judy Garland as the mesmerising Vicki Lester in A Star is Born (1954) and Maggie Smith, winning her Oscar for her striking, glacial schoolteacher in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969).

BET T E DAVIS

The grand dame of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Bette Davis commanded attention with her striking visage and powerful performances in films such as What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? But from the get-go, she was blazing trails as one of cinema’s most distinct, eye-expressive actresses.

JU DY GAR L AN D One of the brightest stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Judy Garland dedicated her life to entertaining people. And in that she succeeded as few others have. Across film, radio, television and vaudeville, she amassed a timeless body of work that continues to captivate audiences.

DA ME M AGG IE S MIT H Steely wit and passion for perfection are what define the illustrious career of Dame Maggie Smith. She has won two Oscars and numerous other awards for performances on stage, film and television, and is considered to be one of Britain’s finest and most versatile actors.

A STAR IS BORN The story of a young singer whose rise to stardom is mirrored by her older lover’s inexorable fall, the second version of A Star is Born remains one of the most emotionally compelling films ever produced by Hollywood. Expertly directed by George Cukor who skilfully negotiates every turn in the film’s roller coaster of a narrative, the film is also graced by two of the finest performances ever put on screen. Judy Garland is perfectly cast as the aspiring singer, and James Mason is no less brilliant as the tragic figure of Garland’s fading mentor and husband. A bona-fide classic. Restored to its original 174 min running time, with still images bridging some moments of irretrievable footage. Please note the film screens with a 10 min intermission.

ALL ABOUT EVE A triumph of the American cinema – the quintessential depiction of ruthless ambition in the entertainment industry – it is also a salute to the indomitability of actresses like Bette Davis. Davis shines in her greatest role as veteran actress Margo Channing whose hard-edged personality and experience goes up against the wiles of a younger actress — powerhouse versus ingénue, age versus beauty. Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Oscarwinning drama is one of the greatest films about Hollywood, women, acting, ageing and good old-fashioned rivalry. Now over 60 years old All About Eve hasn't aged a day. Margo Channing would either be very proud or very jealous.

THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE Based on Muriel Spark’s beloved novel, the film stars Maggie Smith in one of her finest performances as a headstrong and unconventional teacher. Jean Brodie is a free-spirited teacher at a Scottish girls' school during the 1930s. She encourages her young pupils to embrace romantic ideals, educating them about love and art rather than hard facts. However, her controversial teaching philosophy draws the ire of the school's headmistress, Miss Mackey, and, as Miss Brodie becomes entangled in a love triangle, her behaviour towards her favourite students becomes increasingly manipulative. When her influence with her young charges indirectly causes a tragic event, Jean begins to unfold, questioning everything she believes in.
