MEMBER EVENTS ACQUANETTA 

    

Description: Acquanetta is a new opera by Michael Gordon and Deborah Artman that explores the ways the movie camera alters how we see and are seen. The opera is Inspired by the B-movie horror film “Captive Wild Woman”. The film starred Mildred Davenport, an African-American actress who was reinvented by Universal Studios as Acquanetta, the Venezuelan Volcano. The opera’s vivid characters reveal their longings, anxieties, and emotional shadows in a meditation on how cinema shapes identity, stereotypes, and transformation. Produced by Beth Morrison Projects in association with Bang on a Can and Trinity Church Wall Street. Co-presented with Gelsey Kirkland Arts Center. SARAH ROTHENBERG’S A PROUST SONATA 

Description: Marcel Proust's revelatory novel comes to life in 7 musical tableaux scored for tenor, two actors, violin, string quartet and piano. Equal parts concert and theater, A Proust Sonata transforms music, painting and literature into multimedia performance. Pianist and director Sarah Rothenberg, joined by a Tony Award-winning design team and a cast that includes Obie Award-winning actor Henry Stram and tenor Nicholas Phan, interweaves sound collage, image and music to evoke the author's themes of memory, lost childhood, fashionable Parisian salons, and the final reclusive years when he withdrew from society to complete his magnum opus. THE ECHO DRIFT 

    

Description: Convicted murderer Walker Loats is trapped in a timeless prison. Unexpectedly befriended by a moth with an offer of a perceived way to freedom, Walker must choose between paying her dues or taking a shortcut that offers to rig the game in her favor. Oscillating between the confines of a tiny cell and an expansive visual world of animation, The Echo Drift unravels a cycle of deceit, temptation, seduction, and fantastical perception. Featuring a live chamber ensemble, electronics, and a six-channel surround sound system, this world premiere opera explores the freewheeling nature of the mind when it is robbed of external stimuli and questions, when in extreme circumstances, is it possible to act in a way that goes against one’s nature? THE HENDRIX PROJECT 

      

Description: 12 disciples have come to New York City’s Fillmore East Auditorium to listen to the Gospel According to Jimi Hendrix. It’s New Year’s Eve 1969, and Hendrix has assembled an electronic blues trio called Band of Gypsys. They bring the heat of a nation at war to a city frozen in mid-winter chill. Hendrix dedicates their performance to the soldiers fighting at home and abroad, where “bullets fly like rain.” It was his final New Year’s Eve. THE UNDERTAKING 

Description: The Undertaking is a playful and idiosyncratic take on the classical trip to the land of the dead. Drawing on The Civilians' myriad conversations with shamans, morticians, and hospice workers, two actors portray a constellation of quirky characters that dive headlong into the anxieties and mysteries of mortality. A NYTimes Critics' Pick, this "morbidly funny" and "thought-provoking" play takes the idea of the recorded interview and pushes it into surprising (and personal) new places. THUNDERSTORM 2.0 @ UNDER THE RADAR 

Description: North American Premiere of "Thunderstorm 2.0" by China's leading avantgarde theater director Wang Chong and his Beijing-based company. "2.0" retells the Chinese classic "Thunderstorm" from female leads' angles and set the story in 1990’s Beijing. Using real-time filming and video mixing, it incorporates live Pingtan, a traditional musical story-telling form, to perform the dialogue while the actors perform wordlessly.
