FL 10 Survey Results

DATE:

October 2, 2012

The results of our survey of likely voters in Florida’s 10th Congressional District put Democrat Val Demings within striking distance of incumbent Republican Congressman Daniel Webster.

  

If the election for Congress was today, 41% of likely voters say they would vote for Val Demings, while 46% would vote for Daniel Webster – putting the incumbent below the critical 50% threshold. In the race for President, Barack Obama is currently tied with Mitt Romney, with support for each at 47%. In the race for the U.S. Senate, Bill Nelson leads Connie Mack by 8 points, 48% to 40%. After voters hear positive profiles of both Demings and Webster, the race tightens to just three points, with Demings at 46% and Webster at 49%. Democrat Val Demings is an independent and tough leader for Central Florida. She spent 27 years as an officer with the Orlando Police Department and in 2007 was named the department’s first female Chief. Her tenure was marked by a dramatic forty percent reduction in violent crime. Having retired as Chief, Demings seeks to continue her commitment to public service by working to end the petty, partisan quarrelling in Washington and keeping the American Dream a reality for middle class families. Demings believes millionaires should pay their fair share of taxes and that we must end corporate welfare in order to balance the budget in a way that protects Social Security and Medicare. Republican Congressman Daniel Webster has a proven record as a fiscal conservative and a reformer who makes government more accountable. As a leader in the Florida Legislature, Webster helped keep state spending in check in order to maintain a balanced budget and is working to do the same since his election to Congress two years ago. Webster has clear priorities: balancing the budget, stopping tax increases, protecting the Social Security Trust Fund, and eliminating wasteful spending. In Congress, he refused to accept a pay raise and cut nearly $500 thousand from his office budget. As a local business owner, he knows that we cannot get our economy moving again and create jobs without reducing the regulatory and tax burdens that Washington liberals place on business.

This memorandum summarizes results from a live telephone poll of 402 randomly selected likely voters in Florida’s 10th Congressional District conducted September 22-25, 2012. The estimation error associated with a sample of 402 is 4.9% at the 95% confidence interval. This means that in 95 of 100 cases, the results of this poll are within plus or minus 4.9 points of the results that would have been obtained if all likely voters had been interviewed. Note that special care was taken to ensure the geographic and demographic divisions of the actual electorate are properly represented.
