KEYNOTE SPEAKER Staff Sgt. Louis Hanson

Louis Hanson, age 97, was born in Jud, N.D. Louis was raised on a family farm and attended Jud public schools. At age 17, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in Sequoia National Park, California and Middle River, Minn. Louis volunteered for the U.S. Army on April 25, 1941 and became a member of the original 164th Infantry Regiment, Americal Division. Louis served more than four years on active duty and is credited with over 600 days of combat operations during WWII. He served at Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Leyte, Cebu, Negros and the Philippines. Louis was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1945. Louis married Kathlene Wilmart in 1947 and farmed for three years in Adrian and Montpelier. After graduation with a four-year Louis Hanson vocational agricultural degree, Louis purchased a farm in Winfield Township and farmed there for 34 years. Louis was simultaneously employed by the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center near Jamestown for 16 years. Louis’s wife Kathlene died in 1997 and his son Robert, a Vietnam Veteran, passed away in 2015. Both are interred at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Louis is a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, AMVETS, 164th Infantry Association, Civilian Conservation Corps Legacy and National Active and the Retired Federal Employees Association. Louis enjoys golf, rodeos, fishing, wildlife and traveling. Any time spent with family, friends and a worn-out deck of cards, makes his day complete.

Colonel Britt Hatley is the commander of the 119th Wing, N.D. Air National Guard, Fargo. Comprised of more than 1100 personnel, the 119th Wing provides combatant commanders trained and ready Airmen executing world class MQ-9 Reaper precision attack and reconnaissance, kinetic and non-kinetic target intelligence production as well as expeditionary support capabilities for the nation and state. Colonel Hatley is a 1995 distinguished graduate of the Reserve Officer Training Corps from Louisiana Tech University. He has served in various flying and staff assignments, to include the Joint Staff as the Department of Defense Liaison to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. His experience in the Col. Britt Hatley, B-2 includes tours in Air Combat Command, Pacific Air Forces, and Air Force Emcee Global Strike Command where he led the 110th Bomb Squadron to a historic first as the first Air National Guard bomb squadron certified in both nuclear and conventional operations. Colonel Hatley is a graduate of the United States Air Force Weapons School, the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, and the National War College. Prior to his current assignment, Colonel Hatley served as Vice Commander for the 119th Wing. His military decorations and awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with 2 oak leaf clusters), Air Medal (with 1 oak leaf cluster), Air Force Commendation Medal (with 1 oak leaf cluster), Air Force Achievement Medal and Meritorious Unit Award.
