Merging 3-D Virtual Technology and Live Dance Theatre, Melanie Stewart and Da·Da·Dance Project Present STICKY at Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center, October 6-8, 2016 A Mexican Man...A Korean Woman...It’s an Election Year...It’s STICKY. NEW YORK, NY — Critically acclaimed choreographer and director Melanie Stewart in collaboration with performers Eun Jung Choi and Guillermo Ortega Tanus of Da·Da·Dance Project (Philadelphia) present the New York City premiere of STICKY at Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center (280 Broadway), ThursdaySaturday, October 6-8, 2016 at 8pm as part of Gibney Dance’s POP: Performance Opportunity Project. A work of visual theatre crafted by Melanie Stewart, STICKY integrates dance, language, film animation, and choreographed 3-D virtual imaging created in Rowan University’s Virtual Reality Center to explore the nature of bonding and “sticky” situations that arise in long-term romantic relationships. Set to a score by Alban Bailly, STICKY’s underlying currents of attraction, repulsion, frustration, and compulsion drive escapism in a world where a couple’s negotiation for power and struggle for identity are contextualized in the current political climate. Projections designed in the immersive 3-D environment describe the imagined lives of the pair, portrayed by Eun Jung Choi and Guillermo Ortega Tanus. STICKY first premiered in Mexico City in 2012 at the Centro Cultural del Bosque complex. For 2016, the piece has been reimagined, redefined, and reshot in the Virtual Reality Center. ARTISTS Melanie Stewart (Direction and Choreography) creates darkly absurd movement-driven theatre focusing on the nuanced, weird, and vulnerable side of American culture. From 1983-2015 she was the Artistic Director of Melanie Stewart Dance Theatre, producing over 40 original works of dance and theatre both nationally and abroad. Through the integration of movement, text, and image, she investigates the ability of the body to carry meaning in original narratives.
