Even with a modest income and assets, a person might still qualify for food and medical assistance. For people age 60 and older, high medical expenses may help you qualify. If your income is approximately $1,800 or less a month, then it is likely you are eligible to receive some help. National Preparedness Month In 2004, September was designated as National Preparedness Month. The purpose of this was to promote awareness about dealing with a natural disaster, blackout or other type of emergency. Getting organized supports this effort quite well! One of the recommendations for National Preparedness Month is to set up a so-called “disaster supply kit.” First of all, you will need to acquire a large-sized container with a lid. The clear types of totes sold by Rubbermaid® or Sterilite® work well. Gather up the following basic sustenance items: one gallon of water per person per day; three days’ supply of food; paper plates, cups, napkins, utensils, plastic food bags, rubber gloves and can opener; and extra food and water for pets. Hygiene necessities such as toilet paper, toothbrush, soap, garbage bags & ties and moist towelettes should also go into this container. In addition, include personal needs such as a change of clothing, comfortable footwear, and one blanket or sleeping bag per person. Don’t forget a fire extinguisher, flashlight with working batteries, phone that does not rely on electricity, battery-powered radio and first aid kit. An extra set of car and house keys is essential, and perhaps a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities. This is also an ideal time to organize our prescriptions and OTC’s. Write down their names and dosages. Be sure to add to the list any specialized medical supplies, including eyeglasses, walkers, oxygen tanks, etc. that might be needed in a hurry. You will want to have this sheet readily available to refer to. That way, you can easily add our medical supplies to the container should the need arise. Finally, all of your important documents should be kept in a well-organized folder and added to the kit in case of emergency. Next month’s newsletter will summarize the list of important documents. Besides making up a disaster supply kit, there are two other aspects of being prepared, namely, becoming informed and having a plan in place. The website www.ready.gov expands on all these topics and is a great source of information. Having an organized system in the unlikely event of a disaster can give you peace of mind and help you feel more in control of our lives. After all, that is what organization always tries to achieve!
