Message from the Principal Dear Parents, We are reaching the homestretch of the 20162017 school year with the end of the third marking period; there are only nine weeks of learning remaining in this school year. Our students, with the exception of our seniors, will return from Spring Break and will be involved in testing during the week of April 10th. Please refer to the schedule on page four of this newsletter for more information regarding the upcoming state testing. Our counseling staff has been busy verifying student course requests for the 2017-2018 school year. Parents and students often like to make specific requests for teachers, but it is not possible to honor requests for specific teachers. However, parents can submit a written request if they would like their child NOT to be scheduled with a specific teacher. We will only honor those requests from parents if their student, or a sibling of the student, already had that teacher and had a less-thanpositive experience with that teacher. All requests are to be submitted to me in writing or via email at [email protected] no later than Friday, May 5, 2017. If a request is sent via email, parents will receive email verification that their email has been received. With the end of the school year in sight, some teens may begin to mentally check out. It is important that students remain focused on their studies and finish the school year as strongly as they began the year. A key component is for students to continue to effectively manage their time. Students should remember to: develop a weekly schedule; create a study plan; make good use of extra time; limit the

amount of time lost on social media, video games, etc.; and, most importantly, make the most of their time in school. By following these suggestions on appropriate time management, students should be able to remain focused and finish the year in a positive fashion. Our students continue to excel in many aspects, including academic competitions, athletics, music, and other related school events. We do our best to publicize these successes on our school’s FaceBook and Twitter pages. Be sure to “Like” Flushing High School on FaceBook. We have exceeded over 2,000 who have “liked” Flushing High School and follow Flushing High School on Twitter @FlushingMIHS. By being connected on social media, students and parents can be up-to-date on Flushing High School information. I would like to wish everyone a successful completion of the 2016-2017 school year. It is our hope that the school year will end in a productive, smooth and safe fashion.

Sincerely,

Jason Melynchek Principal

Individual student schedules will be posted in the Attendance Office window starting Monday, April 24th. The $315 registration fee deadline was Thursday, March 24th. This fee includes both Segment I and Segment II, taken later during the school year.

TESTING OUT: Under the State of Michigan’s Michigan Curriculum Law, testing out is an option available to any student who can demonstrate that he/she meets or exceeds the content expectations associated with a specific course. By earning a qualifying score of 78% or higher on a course’s assessment(s), a student can test out of the course and receive credit for that course. This credit, while counting toward graduation, does not impact a student’s grade point average; the student will receive credit but not a grade for the course. Parents of students wishing to test out must submit a request in writing or via email to deborah.goldstein@flushingschool s.org by Monday, April 17. Please be sure to include the student’s name and the name of the course(s) the student wishes to attempt to test out of. In early May, students will receive information regarding what they should know and any work they must complete in advance of the testout process. Testouts will occur in June. Specific dates and times for testouts will be included in the information students receive in May.

“Bad Auditions by Bad Bad Actors” It’s the last play of the year! The Flushing High School students proudly present Ian McWethhy's comedy, “Bad Auditions by Bad Actors.” What happens when a new director has one day to find the leads for a community theater production of Romeo and Juliet? Chaos! Especially when the audition pool includes extreme method actors, performers who can't control their emotions and one woman who may or may not think she's a cat just to name a few! This hilarious comedy will bring you to the last place you'd ever want to be...behind the doors of a casting session.

Come see "Bad Auditions by Bad Actors" at Flushing High School for only $5.00 on Friday, May 12th at 7:30 P.M., A matinee performance at 12 P.M. on Saturday, May 13th and Sunday, May 14 at 2:30 P.M. at the Auditorium. th

DROP-OFF/PICK-UP When dropping your child off in the morning or picking up your child in the afternoon at the main entrance of the high school, please keep the following in mind: Drop-off and pick-up should be done in the lefthand lane of the parking lot. Please keep the right-hand lane clear to accommodate through traffic. This is also a safety concern as we do not want students walking in front of cars that are in the left-hand lane, especially in the morning when it is still dark. Thank you for helping us with this issue and keeping our students safe.

YEARBOOK If you haven’t ordered the 2016-17 yearbook yet, you can still do so. Please have your child bring in a check for $80 made out to Flushing High School and drop it off to Mr. Daniels in room 500, or order online at www.jostensyearbooks.com. The deadline for ordering is May 24th, so reserve your copy today. Senior parents, we have a few spots open for our Proud Parent Ads. If interested, please go to www.flushingyearbook.com for details. Space is on a first-come, first-served basis.

TRANSPORTATION VARIANCES 2017-2018 If you require your child to ride a different bus than their home bus route for 2017-2018 school year, you must complete a Request for Transportation Variance form. The 2017-18 variances will be available in early May, 2017. Please watch for more info to come. REMINDER: You must complete a new Transportation Variance each year. Variances are not carried over year to year.

TOP STUDENTS FOR 2017: When the students in the Class of 2017 completed their seventh semester at Flushing High School in January, 51 percent had earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above.
