Message of the Director Dear

Colleagues

and

Partners,

This week has been an exciting week as we are celebrating International Women’s Day. The UNESCO Office for Eastern Africa celebrated the day at the University of Nairobi and at the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa. At the University of Nairobi during the

Innovation Week, UNESCO propagated the important role of women in technology and innovation, and praised young girls for their extraordinary work in Mobile App Development, under the UNESCO Youth Mobile Initiative, through a workshop and a hackathon organized by UNESCO during the Nairobi Innovation week, from 26 February to 5 March I Nairobi. Hands-on work, learning, determined and hardworking, Women in Tech were the protagonists of

this

year

International

Women’s

Day.

According to a recent report, the inequalities in access to digital media are diminishing globally, for all populations across the world. However, this general trend conceals another, which is worrying to say the least: an increasing gap between the number of men and women with an online presence. In 2016, there were 250 million more men than women online. If women are more connected, they can use digital technologies for the advancement of society, we can have a pluralistic, more diverse and inclusive media environment, where every voice

is

heard.

At the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, we celebrated women and their contribution to society but also at the workplace. We reflected on action at the office to join international gender champions and committed to gender parity of panelists in all events organized by the office. We committed to gender equality and empowerment in the workplace and no sexual harassment and exploitation at the workplace. UNESCO should be at the forefront of the fight against gender discrimination, deconstructing the stereotypes. In parallel, UNESCO, in collaboration with Media INK and UN Women, under the initiativeWomen Make the News, breaking gender stereotypes of women in media outlets, produced a series of videos portraying somali women and their courage to make a difference in society by advocating and raising awareness about world happenings and the important place of

women

in

newsrooms.

The Time is Now to make a Change, and Bring about Innovation and Leadership in People’s Lives. Women can lead the visionary and transformational process. We start today! Happy International Women’s Day to all, and may Women be role models for the generations to

come.

Next week, I will be in the Seychelles and take part in a joint scoping mission for education policies

in

the

Seychelles.

What happened this week Stars in Africa for Youth and Entrepreneurship in Nairobi 6 to 7 March 2018 Nairobi, Kenya Stars in Africa is a unique market place. Its goal is to connect and accelerate the actors and networks that bring proven solutions for youth training,

employment

entrepreneurship

in

and Africa

while doing business. This private-sector

led

dynamic

brings an outstanding view on entrepreneurship and youth by federating renown in-the-field actors and networks. It is a world cup of ‘doers’ championing business and societal actions together. In 2050, Africa is expected to host nearly 1/4 of the global urban population. The dynamic of demography in Africa is either seen a chance or a risk. Whatever stance observers take, infrastructures will have to be created and adapted to the new realities. In the next 35 years, Africa will need to accommodate almost 900 million new urban dwellers. Schools, universities, housing, transportation, hospitals will have to be crafted to face the increasing demand and urban centers will have to manage an exponential population while offering additional services and qualitative life for the population. UNESCO participated, on 6 March 2018, on a panel session discussing the new economic leadership of Africa and the role of Youth and Women to become the pillars of this first global network marketplace. Entrepreneurs will be also the pillars of this ongoing transformation, and Education is key to building the culture of entrepreneurship.
