Message of the Director Dear

Colleagues

and

Partners,

Last week we had a successful Regional Technical Workshop on Advancing Policies of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Eastern Africa, from 8 to 10 May 2018, in Nairobi Kenya. The workshop gathered thirteen countries in Eastern Africa to share experiences and best practices in ESD Policies. The aim for each country was to develop their own national policies and to mainstream ESD in their educational systems. It is expected that the national policy will become the guiding instrument for the national strategy for sustainable development (SDGs) and UNESCO is committed to helping ministries of education to design

and implement policies on ESD to integrate ESD into curricula and national quality standards and

outcomes.

Furthermore, the Workshop on creating an inventory of intangible heritage in Juba, South Sudan came to an end on 12 May 2018. The process of inventorying intangible cultural heritage and making those inventories accessible to the public can also encourage creativity and self-respect in the communities and individuals where expressions and practices of intangible cultural heritage originate. The inventory provides a basis for formulating concrete plans

to

safeguard

the

intangible

cultural

heritage.

On 11 May 2018, we also celebrated the UN Open Day in the Kenya UN Compound in Nairobi, gathering UN staff and their families to appreciate the work of the UN, showcasing the projects and initiatives of UN agencies and programmes, with music and games for children and UN tours available for all! UNESCO was present with an exhibition booth, highlighting the work UNESCO is doing in the East Africa Region. I wish to congratulate all of you, in all offices in East Africa for all the efforts and the extra miles of your tasks and responsibilities! In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Global Education Monitoring Report 2017/2018 was launched on 13 May 2018. The report addresses accountability in education and the shared responsibilities of all actors and stakeholders of education to ensuring quality and inclusive education I

Regional

Meeting

to

address

Early

Unintended Pregnancy in Eastern and Southern

Africa

A regional meeting to develop messages to address Early Unintended Pregnancy in Eastern and Southern Africa region was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 8 May 2018. Kenya was represented by Ms. Jane Kamau, Programme Officer HIV and Health Education. The message development process was

informed

by

thesituational

analysis undertaken in 10 countries including Kenya. Early and unintended pregnancy (EUP) is a global public health concern, with particularlyhigh prevalence rates in SubSaharan Africa. EUP is driven by multiple factors

that

include poverty,

lack

of

information and access to reproductive health services, cultural norms, peer pressure and sexual coercion/abuse. EUP jeopardizes educational attainment for girls through school drop-out and decreased school completion. Preventing EUP is therefore an important component of a wider response to ensuring the right to education for all girls. Achieving this requires an effective response from the education sector, in collaboration with other sectors. UN

UNESCO joined forces with the UN System in Kenya to explain the work of the United Nations n the Eastern Africa region, on 11 May 2018. UN programmes and funds exhibited their work through stands, welcoming UN staff and their families in the world of the UN, offering free UN tours and UN bike tours, playing Jazz music and involving children in face-painting and games activities. Drummers from Burundi performed in front of an estimate of 4000 participants, among UN staff, families and embassy representatives. A refugee market, with young women from refugee camps in Kenya, showcased their handcrafts and their artisans work, as a way of unleashing their creative potentials into an economic-activity that can empower them socially and economically. The aim of the UN Open Day was to build solidarity and team work among UN agencies, as well as opening the world of the UN to build it closer to the people. To view photos of the event, click here
