FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 5, 2015 MFM ANNOUNCES NOMFA 2015 MUSIC NOMINEES Sudbury– On the evening of May 30th, Music and Film in Motion will celebrate our talent at the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards by presenting 11 artists with awards for excellence in music and film. NOMFA 2015 is proud to announce the nominees in its six exciting Music Award categories. These nominees represent the music industry’s best and brightest from all over Northern Ontario.

BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE ON A RECORDING Lia – “No Good for Me” Lia is a 22-year-old singer/songwriter/pianist from Sudbury. She was the winner of the 2013 Sudbury Jazz Festival’s Emerging Artist Showcase, and has been playing in numerous venues around Sudbury for the past eight years. Lia recently released a self-titled album which features her performance of “No Good for Me.” Mike Charette – “Revolving Door” Mike Charette is a singer/songwriter from Sudbury. His first solo EP “What Would You Do?” was released in December of 2014. Mike previously shared the stage with Juno award winner Serena Ryder and local Trille Or winner Stef Paquette. His powerful vocals and unique style are showcased in “Revolving Door.” Rose-Erin Stokes – “Break” Hailing from Northern Ontario, Rose-Erin Stokes' music is raw, honest and tells stories of love lost and silver linings. Her debut EP Not Alone, is full of lyrics that give the listener a window into this songstress' heart. Her melodies range from ethereal pop to playful soul to toe tapping folk.

BEST ENGINEER Ben Leggett for Faraway Neighbours’ “I May Never Find Home” Ben Leggett is a JUNO Nominated Producer, Engineer and Mixer working out of North Bay, Ontario. He has experience in genres from Country & Folk to Rock & Metal. Dave Angell & Chris Dorota for Shy-Anne Hovorka’s “Bones” Long time friends and business partners Chris Dorota and David Angell have been working together at Dining Room Studios in Thunder Bay for the past eight years. Though they often work separately, it isn’t uncommon for the two to collaborate, as they did on “Bones”. Rusty McCarthy for Britta Wolfert’s “Moonstone” Rusty McCarthy is a singer, songwriter, producer, engineer, and one of the finest Blues and Jazz guitarists on the scene today. Rusty has shared the stage with Alannah Myles, Tom Cochrane, Barenaked Ladies and played Blues with Jeff Healey.

BEST SONGWRITER Kalle Mattson – “A Love Song to the City” Kalle Mattson is a Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario born singer/songwriter. His most recent album Someday, The Moon Will Be Gold was nominated for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize & recieved rave reviews from Pitchfork, Exclaim, PopMatters. Mimi O'Bonsawin – “Brave” Mimi was born in Sudbury, Ontario to Native Canadian/French Canadian parents. Mimi’s songs are not what you’d expect from a 20 year old, but come from a place deep inside that truly reflects Mimi’s values and maturity.

Murder Murder – “Diana” Murder Murder is a Bloodgrass band (Bluegrass + Outlaw Country + exclusively murder ballads) hailing from the frozen forests of the Ontario Northland. Their tales of death are filled with life by the kick of the suitcase, saw of the fiddle, and roll of the banjo.

BEST MUSIC VIDEO BY A NORTHERN ONTARIO ARTIST Clarian feat. Jessica Cardinal – “Mirror of the Sun” (Dir: John Alden Milne) Jessica Cardinal is known mostly as a solo artist, but her career has taken an exciting turn with her much anticipated EDM project 'nova' being released in August. Taking a break from live performances for two years, Cardinal studied Sound Design at the Trebas Institute in Montreal. "Mirror of the Sun," her collaboration with electronic musician Clarian, well-known globally in underground EDM communities, was the first ever release on Seth Troxler's new label "Soft Touch". Kalle Mattson – “A Love Song to the City” (Dir: Justin Colautti) See “Best Songwriter” category for bio. Matt Foy – “Outlaw” (Dir: John Alden Milne) Matt’s musical journey began at age 11 when he received a brand new acoustic guitar. He is a multitalented vocalist, musician and composer; playing guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolin and percussion. Matt has composed music for elleQ dance factory and soundtracks for several movies.

BEST ALBUM BY A SOLO ARTIST The Blazing Elwoods –Don't Sell the Car The Blazing Elwoods is the brainchild of Brent Wohlberg, a singer/songwriter from Sudbury. Five years ago, Wohlberg found country music and realized that he had to write a country album. BEST ALBUM BY A DUO OR GROUP Canucky Bluegrass Boys – Dirty Ol’ Job The Canucky Bluegrass Boys is a widely popular veteran bluegrass band from Northern Ontario that has been entertaining fans with their captivating brand of traditional, contemporary and original bluegrass music for many years. Frank Deresti and the Lake Effect – Frank Deresti and the Lake Effect CBC’s Amanda Putz describes their sound as “folk-pop awesomeness.” Frank Deresti and the Lake Effect are a hard-working and adventurous group of musicians from Sault Ste. Marie, with an infectious love of performing and a unique take on the singer-songwriter genre. Quatuor Philip May Quartet – Sudbury Drummer Philip May played his first professional gig at the age of 14 and by 16, he had attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. At 18, he was the leader of a jazz trio that featured guitarist Reg Schwager. They were the first group to record and broadcast from CBC and Radio Canada stations in Sudbury.
