Robert Key has competed in more than 200 races ranging from 5K to ultra marathons. Join this popular motivation speaker as he covers mental strategies for race day and last minute preparation for all athletes, ranging from first timers to beginners to intermediate level runners who may be running their first race at a particular distance or one of the races here in Houston for the first time.

Tendon Pain: Evidence-Based Strategies for Race Day & Beyond Brian Duncan PT, DPT | Memorial Hermann

Brian Duncan is a sports physical therapist at the IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute where he also serves as Director of Residency Programs & Human Performance. His clinical interests include operative and non-operative rehabilitation of adults and youth athletes, with a particular interest in runners and triathletes. Dr. Duncan is board certified in both sports and orthopedic physical therapy and fellowship trained in manual therapy. He is active in the American Physical Therapy Association serving in the House of Delegates and Residency Accreditation Committee and has received awards locally and nationally for excellence in clinical practice and excellence in clinical teaching. When not practicing in the clinic, he can be found being active and playing sports with his wife and four young children.

Stacy will provide an overview of her journey to write a book honoring the Houston running community and tell the stories of the individuals who exercise at Memorial Park. Along her way, she has gained an even deeper appreciation and love for the people she has met who continue to inspire and encourage countless lives.

A native Houstonian, Dr. Jocelyn Szeto graduated summa cum laude from The University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business. She earned her medical degree at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed her internal medicine residency at Weill Cornell Methodist Hospital in Houston where she served as chief medical resident. She then completed her fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas in Greenville, South Carolina. Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Szeto specializes in internal medicine with an emphasis on sports medicine. Her clinical interests include ultrasound-guided procedures, concussion evaluation and management and care of the female athlete. She focuses on care for the active person, ranging from a cold and preventive medicine to non-operative management of musculoskeletal injuries and injury prevention.

Last Minute Tips for the Houston Marathon and Half Marathon Ashley Benson | runcoach

Ashley is the Head of Product at Runcoach. Runcoach uses a dynamic algorithm to coach beginner runners to elites to their best performances though a website and mobile app. On average, runners improve their race times by 7% when they train with Runcoach for 6 months or more. Runcoach has provided training to Houston Marathon, Half and 5K participants since 2009. Prior to Runcoach, Ashley was the Head Cross Country and Track and Field coach at California State University, Bakersfield and the Assistant Cross Country and Track & Field coach at the University of Redlands. As a collegiate runner, Ashley competed for the University of Wisconsin.

“Which one (marathon) was your favorite?” is a question Bickley is frequently asked. As a partial answer to this, the presentation includes several past and present favorite runs and races with stories from them. Ed will take the audience on a walk through some of the major factors which lead to success in completing distance races, based on sports research and personal experience, for either the novice or experienced competitive runner.

Runner Injury Prevention: How to Avoid Common Foot & Ankle Injuries Jamie Aparicio, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS, USATF-1 | Memorial Hermann

Jaime Aparicio is a sports physical therapist at the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute’s Human Performance Lab at Shepherd Square. Dr. Aparicio is a board certified Sports Clinical Specialist and Strength and Conditioning Specialist whose clinical specialties include the rehabilitation of endurance athletes, including runners and triathletes. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Aparicio is a professor of Biomechanics in the Kinesiology Department at Rice University and serves as Medical Director for Trail Racing Over Texas. He is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association and American College of Sports Medicine where he has presented locally and nationally. Outside of practice, he can be found enjoying the outdoors and reading.

Taylor Barros | Memorial Hermann Taylor Barros graduated with her degree in dietetic science from Florida State University in 2016. After graduation Taylor applied for a fellowship through Gatorade. The Gatorade fellowship is an opportunity for 10 new sports dietitians to work alongside 10 seasoned sports dietitians to gain hands-on learning experience with athletes and sports teams. Taylor currently works one-on-one with clients at Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institutes; is doing research at the Medical Center; and with the football, women's basketball, and softball teams at Houston Baptist University.

In 2016, two weeks after running 2:23 at the Houston Marathon, Calum Neff broke the Guinness World Record for Fastest Half Marathon at the Katy Half with his youngest daughter Holland in 1 hour 11 minutes and 27 seconds. Later in the year at the Toronto Marathon with his four year old, Alessandra, they ran 2 hours and 31 minutes and 22 seconds to break the previous record by over 10 minutes. Come and hear Neff's stories of the records and his tips for training, racing, and balancing running with life. Calum has run the past four Houston Marathon's with his fastest in 2:22 and last year pacing Becky Wade to a podium finish and Mary Davies to 6th place - he truly knows this course so come and hear his tips for race day.

Come join Chevron Houston Marathon Ambassador Lindsay for yoga for runners after the ABB 5K! Lindsay is a digital marketing professional, yoga teacher, former collegiate swimmer, marathon runner and fitness blogger. Her running adventures have taken her to 13 marathons (and more half marathons than she can count!), including a recent Boston Qualifying time (BQ). Lindsay is a four time race ambassador for the Chevron Houston Marathon. She teaches yoga at Revolution Studio and loves when runners come to her classes! Lindsay catalogues her fitness adventures and stories from the road on her blog, Loving Life on the Run.

Blaine Schmidt, a former Division II collegiate, student-athlete, is from Gettysburg, South Dakota. Blaine graduated with Honors from Northern State University with a degree in Human Performance and Fitness and minor in Coaching. While there, he spent some time working as an intern with the Athletic Trainers. Blaine was also awarded the NSIC All Academic Team all 4 years at NSU. Prior to joining the Athlete Training and Health and Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute staff, Blaine developed a Summer Strength and Conditioning program for athletes in grades 7-12 at three high schools located in South Dakota.

Brett Singer is a registered and licensed dietitian who holds a master’s in nutrition. He is also board certified in sports dietetics. As a sports dietitian, Brett has worked with high school, college, and professional athletes with a focus on improving performance through proper nutrition. Singer also enjoys working with endurance athletes ranging from first time runners to experienced IRONMAN athletes.

Dennis Rogers gained instant notoriety as a strongman in 1993, after withstanding the pull of two U.S. Air Force T-34 aircraft. By 1998, the Association of Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen named him Pound-for-Pound the World’s Strongest Man for the feats he performs. Today, he is a Grandmaster Strongman and he travels the world performing incredible feats of strength.

Meet the Athletes With Disabilities Field Bernie Tretta | Houston Marathon Committee, Inc.

An introduction to the 2018 Athletes With Disabilities field including an athlete from each ability type. Bernie Tretta has managed the Athletes With Disabilities program at the Houston Marathon since its inception in 2014. Through this program over 450 runners, guides and volunteers have participated in the race weekend events.
