Cliff Reeves, Senior Director, Microsoft Microsoft Innovation Centers (MICs) are facilities that provide world-class resources and support for students, entrepreneurs and startups, accelerating the creation of new companies, jobs, and growth of the local software ecosystem (see http://mic.msdeveloper.com.au/). Launched in May 2012, the Brisbane MIC was the first in Australia. It aims to assist in the establishment of 100 start-ups alongside industry partners over three years and builds on Microsoft’s BizSpark program in Australia. The goals of the centre include:  Assisting in the establishment of 100 start-ups over three years.  Working alongside industry partners to develop successful start-ups.  Extending reach into regional Queensland to assist in establishing start-ups and to leverage the National Broadband Network.  Supporting and equipping businesses through commercial success or acquisition.  Positioning Queensland as a flagship state for innovation in productivity. As part of an ecosystem of accelerators, innovation hubs, start-up and entrepreneurial coworking spaces in Brisbane, the MIC is a strategic partner from idea to execution, with a focus on three key areas: skills, business development and connection to industry. When the MIC was launched, Maree Adshead, Queensland chair of the Australian Information Industries Association, commented on innovation as the key in Queensland’s plight to become a global competitor. “Young technology start-ups are the engine room of innovation and are critical to a healthy technology ecosystem…For too long, young Queensland innovation has been the quiet achiever. This initiative will have a real and long-lasting impact.” Maree Adshead The MIC provides access to free software, loan devices and heaps of events for students, developers and start-ups. The visit to the MIC, a short walk from the QUT Gardens Point campus will include a tour of the facilities, a discussion of how the MIC operates and achievements to date.
