The note, published by BuzzFeed News, indicated that 250 of the cuts will take place at the company's San Francisco headquarters. "This isn't how any CEO would choose to spend his first week on the job," Fulcher wrote, "but I strongly believe these difficult decisions are essential in setting Zenefits up for success." This marks the third round of layoffs since founding CEO Parker Conrad resigned amid controversy early last year when an internal investigation found the company was skirting California regulations to 1

According to a new report by the DC-based Pew Research Center and Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center, 37% of more than 1,300 technologists, futurists and scholars surveyed believe the negatives of algorithms will outweigh the positives, while another 25% believe the effects will be about 50-50. Among the negatives cited by experts were fears that a reliance on data and predictive modeling could lead to a loss in human judgment, that algorithms reflect the biases of programmers and that the spread of artificial intelligence could create significant unemployment. "These experts are excited about the future potential of advances in AI and the Internet of Things, but they are also deeply concerned about keeping global good and basic human values at the forefront," said co-author Janna Anderson. "They believe humans must act now to create and implement mechanisms to accentuate the positives and reduce the likely negatives of algorithm-based everything."
