Attention 7th and 8th Grade Principals and Athletic Administrators You are receiving this memo from a sub-committee of the Ohio High School Athletic Association as part of an effort to send quarterly communication to 7th and 8th grade Principals and Athletic Administrators. These updates will be sent the week of March 1, June 1, August 1 and November 1 throughout the year. It is our hope that this communication will increase your awareness of important items that pertain to 7th and 8th grade athletics and increase overall communication and understanding of OHSAA bylaws, procedures and policies.

OHSAA 7th and 8th Grade Committee

The OHSAA 7th and 8th Grade Committee supports education-based athletics for member schools and focuses on enhancing opportunities for student-athletes to participate in school-sponsored programs within the guidelines set forth by the OHSAA. We believe the values of participation are an integral part of a student’s educational experience and are enriched when they occur under the supervision of school approved personnel.

Ten (10) Reminders for the Winter 2016-17 Season 1.

Student-athletes must receive a passing grade in five subjects during the immediately preceding grading period to remain eligible. The five classes must be indicated on the student’s academic record. 2. All athletes must have a physical on file that meets the requirements of Bylaw 3-4-1 before they can participate in any organized activity. 3. All athletes must have the OHSAA Concussion Form completed and on file with school administration. 4. Make sure that your athletic director is holding an organized Parent/Student-Athlete Meeting before each season and then registers the date on myOHSAA. 5. Check the OHSAA handbook for proper starting dates for winter sports. 6. 7th and 8th grade student-athletes CAN participate in open-gym training sessions outside of the season with students in grades 9-12. However, they CANNOT practice or compete against student athletes in grades 9-12 during the school season. 7. Please double check that ALL coaches meet PAV, Coaching Education, concussion education, and other mandatory requirements. 8. Groups such as the Ohio Athletic Committee (OAC) and The Middle School Athletic Association (MSAA) are NOT affiliated with the OHSAA and are NOT endorsed by the OHSAA. Student-athletes that participate in a non-interscholastic contest sponsored by one of these groups are NOT covered by the OHSAA catastrophic insurance. Please note the district assumes risk when student-athletes compete under your school name in an event sponsored by the OAC or MSAA. 9. The committee also discussed sixth grade students being included in OHSAA middle school athletics. There has been at least one group of schools in the state that has officially asked about this for their conference. At this point in time the committee and the Commissioner’s Office are not in favor of this participation for several reasons, including the increase cost of staff, transportation, catastrophic insurance, etc. 10. We are continuing to encourage the concept of multi-sport athletes for our schools. We want to encourage the benefits of being a well-rounded student-athlete.

The OHSAA Middle School Committee will meet again on January 18, 2017. If you have an item for the agenda, please feel free to submit it to the following committee members: Tom Martin – [email protected] Kevin Katafias – [email protected]
