From the President

Can you believe that Midland College is 35 years old? Yes, it was that long ago that the first Board of Trustees selected Dr. Al G. Langford to be president of this new college. He hired the first administrators and faculty to launch this bold venture. For a decade he saw it grow and prosper. Dr. Jess H. Parrish followed in his footsteps in providing the college with the expertise gained as president of a community college in Tennessee. Again, this president served for a decade, leading the college in pertinent areas that were common in those young institutions called community colleges. It was my good fortune to follow these educational giants and to have been a part of our continued growth and development during the past 16-plus years. The Board of Trustees of Midland College has always consisted of intelligent and dedicated men and women who have directed this community college into relevant areas of service. They are to be congratulated for their vision and constant support! So, here we are with 35 years of successful operation, continuing to grow and serve. Happy 35th Birthday, Midland College!!!

35th Anniversary Commemorative Artwork What better way to acknowledge an anniversary than with art? That’s what Art Professor Warren Taylor thought. In his collaboration with Publications Lab Instructor Karen Lanier, they arrived together at an ingenious concept. What began as the design of two minds, ultimately became the united effort of over 25 MC art students. Karen Lanier first designed the artwork using Adobe Photoshop software. Then a grid was superimposed upon the image, increased in scale, and each student was given a 4 x 4 inch square to paint.

The students’ squares were then brought together to form what has ultimately become The Chaparrals. The cumulative effect is similar to that of a mosaic, of many smaller, discrete parts coming together to form a united whole; and students were able to experience the satisfaction of seeing how their individual squares fit into that gorgeous aggregate. The Chaparrals will hang on permanent display in the Scharbauer Student Center.

Our Midland College Ambassadors The Ambassadors are the faces of MC, serving as hosts and guides to visitors and new students. Whether ushering at a Phyllis & Bob Cowan Performing Art Series or Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series event, or assisting at an athletic event, the Ambassadors exemplify the best in hospitality and service that MC has to offer. This group of 30 MC students was founded in 2001 under the leadership of Student Life Director Julia Vickery. Ms. Vickery saw the need for assistance with campus events — there were plenty of activities, but few students available to help.

A scholarship program, funded by the Midland College Foundation, accompanies membership in the Ambassadors. The Ambassadors complete 40 hours of community service each semester and live in the MC residence halls, where their rent is paid because of their service to Midland College. Ambassadors make it a point to go out of their way to help others. Most recently, the Ambassadors were honored to assist the many WWII veterans who attended the Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series appearance of Ken Burns at the Chaparral Center in October. 3

Impacting the future of thousands . . . The Midland College Foundation has benefited from the very generous donations of many community citizens, but there are some gifts that stand out from the rest as Legacy Gifts. These gifts were planned in the individual estates and upon the deaths of the four donors who are featured on this and the following page, the Midland College Foundation became heir to gifts that have forever changed the face of the College and impacted the lives of thousands of MC students.

Leaving a Legacy

J. Robert Jones Since he began his generous funding of the Marian L. and Jan K. Jones Scholarship in 2002, over 340 students have attended Midland College with his help, students who otherwise might not have been able to pursue higher education, were it not for J. Robert Jones.

Mr. Jones passed away on April 11, 2007 but his gift to the Midland College Foundation will live on for a very long time. “Education was very important to him,” said Mary Ann Dzubinski, executor of Mr. Jones’ estate, “and he really wanted to help kids become successful in life. He knew education was their road to success.” Mr. Jones set up the Marian L. and Jan K. Jones Scholarship in honor of his two late wives. “He was such a very, very gentle man, very proper and he disliked notoriety,” Ms. Dzubinski said, “so, he thought the best way to give, would be in memory of his wives.” Over the next 10 years the financial gift from Mr. Jones will total roughly $9 million, the largest single gift ever given to the Midland College Foundation. “Midland was his favorite city and he wanted to do something to help the people of Midland,” says Ms. Dzubinski. Mr. Jones certainly did help the people of Midland, and so much more: he has secured an education for countless students for many generations to come.

Todd Aaron For a decade, Midlander Todd Aaron planned to leave the majority of his estate to the Midland College Foundation. When he died in February of 2006, his will — which assured that future generations of Midland College students would continue to benefit from his love of the college — left more than $3 million to the College. That original gift in September 2006, plus subsequent estate disbursements, were designated for the Chaparral Circle Endowment Fund (CCEF) of the Midland College Foundation, and have now grown to $3,084,195. The Dorothy and Todd Aaron Medical Science Building was dedicated and named in honor of the couple in September 2001. With the $1 million gift to that project, and additional gifts to the Fox Science Building, Nadine and Tom Craddick Hall, the Court of Honor and various scholarships, the Aarons’ contributions to the College total over $4.6 million. “Through his 10 years of giving to the Midland College Foundation, Todd Aaron enjoyed the fruits of his gifts and saw the return on his investment, meeting many of the students and faculty who benefited from his generosity,” said Dr. Eileen Piwetz, Midland College Foundation Executive Director. “I want to give back where I made my money,” Mr. Aaron always said. Through his estate plan, he remembered the Midland College Foundation in his will and contributed to the college in a meaningful way — rewarding the institution he had grown to love.

. . . for generations to come Dollye Neal Ballenger “A woman of faith ... focused, determined, persistent; she knows exactly what she wants and why” — that is the way Midland College President David Daniel characterized benefactor Dollye Neal Ballenger when the Dollye Neal Chapel was dedicated on January 20, 2004 on the campus of Midland College. Mrs. Ballenger intended the Chapel to be “a place apart” — for students, staff, faculty, friends and the community. As a setting for weddings, memorial services, meetings and a place where hundreds of Midlanders have engaged in private meditation and reflection, the Dollye Neal Chapel has become very much a part of campus and community life. When Mrs. Ballenger died in January of 2007, the Dollye Neal Chapel had already become a living tribute to her faith and determination. The Chapel was the fulfillment of the vision she had in 2003, when she gave a gift to the Midland College Foundation that funded the construction and continuing maintenance of the Chapel.

Mrs. Ballenger gave the money for the Chapel specifying that she did not intend the Chapel to promote any particular religious viewpoint or affiliation, and her gift covered the entire cost of construction. And, an additional gift to cover all maintenance costs assured that no money from Midland College’s operating budget was appropriated for the construction of the Chapel, or will be appropriated for its ongoing maintenance. Mrs. Ballenger also contributed to the following at Midland College: the Advanced Technology Center, the Fox Science Building, Friends of the Series, and the Doctor’s Day Scholarship. In May 2006, the design for the Dollye Neal Chapel, by Parkhill, Smith and Cooper, received an Honor Award, the highest award given by the Lubbock Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Ella Mae Dalious A “planned gift” of $938,000 from the estate of longtime Midlander Ella Mae Dalious, who died November 13, 2005 at the age of 89, went to support three Midland College Foundation funds. Part of the gift doubled the size of the Dr. Gregory Bartha Health Sciences Scholarship to more than $700,000. As Mrs. Dalious wished, the donation honors Dr. Bartha, a longtime Midland physician who continues to draw praise from his patients. She also established the Jack A. Dalious Memorial Golf Scholarship and the Jack A. Dalious Professional Development Fund to honor her husband, Jack Dalious, who died in 1996. “The significance of the gift from the Dalious estate cannot be overstated,” Midland College President Dr. David Daniel said. “Supporting the education of our students is our primary mission, and these gifts will benefit generations of students to come.” Ella Mae and Jack Dalious moved to Midland in 1961 where he served as an attorney for Exxon.

Women Sharing the Dream Molly Fox Parsley By Fall 2005, hundreds of students who were studying science at Midland College each semester began using state-of-the-art facilities in the new Leona G. and John E. Fox Science Building, replacing MC’s 30-year-old science laboratories. The new facilities were particularly important to Midland College’s students who take anatomy and physiology, microbiology and general biology — “feeder” courses into all of Midland College’s Health Sciences programs, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s Physician Assistant Program on the MC campus and other universities’ programs. The primary donor for the building was Midlander Molly Parsley, who named the building for her parents, Leona G. and John E. Fox. “As an only child, I was very close to my parents. By naming the building for them, I felt that I could honor both of them and their chosen professions — both based on strong science backgrounds,” Mrs. Parsley said. John Fox was a pharmacist who graduated from the University of Texas School of Pharmacy. Leona Fox was a registered nurse who graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. The Leona G. and John E. Fox Science Building was dedicated on June 21, 2005.

Gray skies turned blue, and New York Opera star and former Midlander Edward Pleasant sang “It’s a Wonderful World,” with words composed especially for the event, as the April 19, 2004 dedication ceremony for the long-awaited Hall’s Way began. Hall’s Way, named for donor F. Marie Hall, is the pedestrian bridge that now links Midland College and Midland Community Theatre.

“She cares a lot ... she’s full of wisdom ... she’s joyful ... she always seeks the truth ... she never gives up on mankind, and she’s a beautiful spirit,” Midland College President David Daniel said of Ms. Hall in a ceremony that included both Midland College and Midland Community Theatre administrators and officials. A Big Spring native, Hall’s philanthropy embraces education, allied health sciences, sports, law, medicine, nursing, research, the arts, rural health care, and scholarships throughout the state. In November 2003, Hall was named “Outstanding Philanthropist” by the Permian Basin Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The Midland College Foundation is proud to present two free community series that entertain and enlighten Midlanders four times each year at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center. Over 83,600 West Texans have attended the Phyllis & Bob Cowan Performing Arts Series and the Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series, which bring renowned performers and speakers to the campus for free community concerts and lectures. These series are also supplemented by Midland College’s Friends of the Series.

Phyllis & Bob Cowan Performing Arts Series Since September of 1999, the Phyllis & Bob Cowan Performing Arts Series endowment has brought at least two of the finest available professional performing arts events to Midland College each year.

The most recent Cowan Performing Arts event was this past September, when The Ten Tenors, Australia’s musical sensation, performed for an audience of close to 4,000 at Chaparral Center. This debonair musical group has amassed an amazing repertoire, from Abba to arias, from which they perform to rave reviews.

The Cowans acknowledged, “We wanted to support Midland’s performing arts in a significant way. Midland has been very good to us, and we wanted to do something meaningful for the community in return.” Mr. Cowan added, “We acknowledge that we are stewards of God’s property, and it is only by His blessing that these funds are available to make this gift.” Events over the last five years include the Flying Karamazov Brothers, Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez, the Eroica Trio, the Moscow Boys Choir, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Laurence Luckinbill in “Teddy Tonight,” Smokey Joe’s Cafe, The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble, Ruthie Foster, the Golden Dragon Acrobats, and Dave Barry.

Dr. Jess H. Parrish Foyer Dedication On Thursday, June 7, 2007, the Midland College Board of Trustees hosted a Foyer Dedication Ceremony to recognize the contributions made by former MC President Dr. Jess H. Parrish, who served from 1981 - 1991. The ceremony included a dedication of the foyer of the Davidson Family Health Sciences Building to Dr. Dr. Parrish (left) and MC Board of Trustees President Ralph Way Parrish, with the unveiling of a plaque and pose in front of the plaque portrait, which will hang permanently in the and portrait. foyer of the building.

An anonymous patient, who felt Bartha saved his life, started the Dr. Gregory Bartha Health Sciences Scholarship with an initial gift of $4,000 in 1997. Since then, the Dr. Gregory Bartha Health Sciences Scholarship has grown tremendously.

It was Dr. Parrish’s forward thinking that enabled MC to address the community’s critical health care needs. He established the Associate Degree Nursing program in 1981 and the Respiratory Care program in 1982. Then, in 1984, Parrish created the Health Sciences Division. He continued to encourage vigorous expansion of the Division, and ultimately established five more new programs: Child Care, 1984; Radiography, 1985; Emergency Medical Services, 1986; Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling, 1988; and Veterinary Technology in 1989. “Each of these programs is a favorite,” Dr. Parrish said at the dedication ceremony, “it’s hard to say just how proud I am right now.”

In November of 2001, a gift of $100,000 was bequeathed by the Frances Metcalfe Estate to the scholarship. Dr. Bartha had been Mrs. Metcalfe’s physician for many years and she wanted to honor him with that very generous gift.

MC President Dr. David Daniel, who has been friends with Dr. Parrish for thirty years, said that Dr. Parrish’s 10-year tenure at Midland College was “a decade of service that will never be forgotten.”

Dr. Gregory Bartha Health Sciences Scholarship Dr. Gregory Bartha, a member of the MC Foundation Board and native Midlander who returned here to practice medicine, continues to draw praise from his patients.

The Dr. Gregory Bartha Health Sciences Scholarship was remembered in another bequest, that of longtime Midlander Ella Mae Dalious, who died November 13, 2005, at the age of 89. The distribution to the Midland College Foundation from the Ella Mae Dalious estate started in November of 2006 with a gift of $938,000, a sum to be divided among three funds — including the Dr. Gregory Bartha Health Sciences Scholarship. As of last July, the gift from the Dalious estate towards the Bartha Scholarship totaled $351,747. Her gift has doubled the size of the Bartha Scholarship, which now stands at $728,747, thanks to Mrs. Metcalfe, Mrs. Dalious and many other generous donors. Hundreds of students in seven MC Health Sciences programs — Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Emergency Medical Services, Health Information Technology, Associate Degree Nursing, Radiography, Respiratory Care, and Vocational Nursing — are eligible to apply for the Bartha Scholarship.

Federal Grants

C o m m u n i t y

Multiple Midland College teams have worked diligently over the last five years to develop federal grant requests which have resulted in over $6.5 million in awards for the institution.

Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions Program Midland College has been notified that the college will receive its third Hispanic Serving Institutions grant from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). This $2.8 million award will allow MC to bridge the educational gap through a redesigning of developmental education and focused outreach services. Previous grants include a partnership with Sul Ross State University (2002-2007) to develop and strengthen science curricula for distance learning delivery and create a 2+2 science transfer program, as well as an individual grant (2000-2005) to transform instructional programs and student services focusing on at-risk, low-income students.

Community Based Job Training Initiative In October of 2005, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) awarded MC a $617,291 grant to provide a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to Registered Nurse (RN) Transition Program at the Williams Regional Technical Training Center (WRTTC) in Ft. Stockton. MC’s award over three years addresses the workforce needs of the health care industry, particularly the nursing shortage, by funding this distance learning program to provide a clear path for LVNs to upgrade their skills and certifications, and subsequently serve the health care needs of rural West Texas.

Upward Bound This past May, the DOE announced that Midland College will receive its third $1 million TRIO grant for its Upward Bound program which will be disbursed in annual installments of $250,000 for the next four years. “We are so pleased to be able to continue this valuable program,” said MC President David Daniel. “It is crucial that Midland College continues to serve disadvantaged and first-generation college students. Upward Bound is critical to our mission in serving this community.” The program serves motivated high school students from low-income families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. MC’s Upward Bound program is currently serving 50 students from 9th through 12th grades and, to date, 144 students have completed the program.

Student Support Services Student Support Services received their original funding in 2001 for their four-year grant cycle. In the fall of 2005, the DOE re-funded Midland College’s program with a $900,000 TRIO grant. This program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements and serves to motivate students towards the successful completion of their post-secondary education. The program has served 371 students since its inception.

Hispanic-Serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) This past August, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the Midland College Business and Economic Development Center (BEDC) a three-year $600,000 grant to establish the first ever Individual Development Account (IDA) program in Midland, Texas. The IDA program will assist at least 75 individuals to purchase a first home or establish/expand a business. In addition, the project will provide financial literacy services to at least 500 individuals. In 2003, a $600,000 HSIAC grant, Juntos Si Podemos (“Together We Can”), from HUD, implemented two initiatives. The Building Sciences Technology initiative assisted with the construction of four Midland Community Development Corporation affordable homes. Midland College Building Sciences Technology students, recruited through the Texas Workforce Network, increased their construction industry skills while assisting with the construction of affordable homes. The initiative also constructed a 7,200 square foot Building Technology Center east of MC’s Cogdell Learning Center on Florida street. The second initiative of the grant was expanding services provided by the Business and Economic Development Center, which resulted in a Business Survival Skills certificate program. The program is a series of classes that provides entrepreneurs the skills they need to succeed in business. In total, 142 individuals have participated in the program and 30 individuals have earned a certificate. Midland College received its first HSIAC grant for $400,000 in 2000. These funds were used to purchase equipment for business and industry classes at the ATC.

Frances Brown Endowed Scholarship

Scholarships

Honoring his wife’s wish to provide scholarship opportunities so that students who struggle financially have an equal opportunity to pursue higher education, Midlander Jack E. Brown began generously funding the Frances Brown Endowed Scholarship in 2006.

12

The scholarship reflects the interests of both Frances and Jack Brown, major philanthropists who enjoy contributing to causes close to their hearts, including the pursuit of higher education and the improvement and beautification of educational institutions. Mrs. Brown, who has a long commitment to the

educational and economic health of the community, reaffirmed her belief in the benefits of the scholarship named in her honor. “I am pleased that this gift will help Midland College students, who would otherwise struggle with college costs, get a college education,” she said. “The financial support of Frances and Jack Brown will change the lives not only of these students but also those of their children and future generations,” said MC President David Daniel.

Midland Medical Alliance Doctor’s Day Health Sciences Scholarship What originally began as an organized “thank you” to the doctors of Midland by the Midland Medical Alliance ultimately became a huge gift for Midland College’s Health Sciences students in 2001 … and still continues today! Doctor’s Day Observance is the brainchild of Edna Hibbitts, who suggested that patients could show their appreciation for their doctors by making donations of $10 or more in their physicians’ names to the Midland College Foundation. So, the Midland Medical Alliance Doctor’s Day Health Sciences Scholarship was established and funded by these contributions from the community. The scholarship is available to all full-time Health Sciences students who maintain a 3.0 GPA, or above. In 2007, there were 842 gifts totaling $19,999. Since its inception, the program has raised a total of $87,060 to assist MC’s Health Sciences students.

Mary Anne Lindley Endowed Art Scholarship Mary Anne Johnson Lindley had a love of the arts—both as an artist and a supporter of art-related endeavors. Midland College, and our community, lost a great friend when she passed away July 24, 2005. During her many years in Midland, she supported and was active in a number of organizations, including Midland College, where she was both a donor and a student. Because of her interest in MC, her family honored her by endowing an art scholarship in the Midland College Foundation. The Mary Anne Lindley Endowed Art Scholarship was established by the Willard & Ruth Johnson Charitable Foundation in December of 2005 with a corpus of $150,000! The scholarship is reserved for art students, and will pay for their tuition, fees, books and art supplies.

Enduring Student/Faculty Connections

Mike Mahoney In high school he “majored in having a good time,” and began from there as a truck driver. Since then, this former MC student has visited 33 countries, most recently having spent two years in Kabul as a hospital administrator, and before that, Guam. How could a man who never planned to go to college achieve such success? The answer is simple: Midland College changed Mike Mahoney’s life. He enrolled in the Respiratory Care program in the fall of 1984. “I couldn’t have asked for better people to work with. I really struggled the first semester and, if it had not been for the teachers helping me through, I would not have made it,” said Mike. Not only did he make it, but he graduated in the spring of 1986 with his Associate of Applied Science degree in Respiratory Care and was named the Respiratory Care Student of the Year. He credits his instructor Bob Weidmann for much of his joy and success at MC. “Bob is one of the best teachers I have ever worked

with. He is truly a gifted educator,” Mike said. He later worked with him in Kabul, Afghanistan, because he actually hired Professor Weidmann to train his hospital staff on their first-ever respirators. And thus, this success story comes full-circle as student and teacher helped the citizens of Kabul.

Mike also received a degree in Health Care Administration from St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine, and is now serving as a senior administrator at a teaching hospital in Southern California.

Midland College’s Director of Respiratory Care, Bob Weidmann, took the most important things he had to give to the citizens of Kabul, Afghanistan and left them all behind when he returned. He shared everything he knew about respiratory care, and how the doctors and nurses of the 210-bed Wazir Akbar Khan hospital should use their first-ever ventilators. But, Weidmann brought back home so much more than he ever imagined—an entirely new view of his own country. “We have so much here. We Weidmann (left) with hospital staff in Kabul take so much for granted and don’t realize that we are the exception compared to people around the world,” he said. The discrepancies are apparent in their healthcare as well. Weidmann was in Kabul to train doctors and nurses on how to use the post-operative care equipment we have had in the United States for years. He was hired for this training post by Mike Mahoney, one of his former MC Respiratory Care students. The hospital where Weidmann worked for two weeks was making history, for these were the first four ventilators to be used in a non-military hospital in Afghanistan. When Bob left Kabul, he told the staff to stay in touch with him if they had any questions. He must have done a great job training them, because he hasn’t heard from them yet.

MC students serving our community MC students have a history of reaching out to the community and many MC student organizations foster giving, service and awareness-raising activities.

MC’s Volleyball Team Before hosting a match with Western Texas College in October, the MC volleyball team gathered in specially made pink T-shirts to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pink ribbons in their hair not only matched their T-shirts, but matched the ubiquitous pink ribbons we have come to honor as the symbol of this great cause. It wasn’t just their clothes, but the ball itself—made with pink, white and black—which was used in the symbolic first serve for this momentous event. After the game, the ball was presented to the American Cancer Society for their fundraising efforts. The volleyball team also hosted a post-game ice cream social with their fans, MC representatives and guests from the American Cancer Society. What was the flavor of the ice cream? Strawberry, of course.

The MC volleyball team and other supporters of the Breast Cancer Awareness event pose with their pink shirts, along with Pepe, MC’s mascot.

Cosmetology Program No matter what the cause or celebration, MC’s Cosmetology Department will be there “with bells on.” Under the altruistic leadership of Director of Cosmetology Michael Fields, these students have assisted with the cancer fundraiser Locks of Love, the Business and Professional Women’s Camp BPW for MC’s Upward Bound and Talent Search students, Cogdell’s Fall Fair and Midland Community Theatre’s production of CATS. Mr. Fields has instilled in his students the idea of giving back to the community, and it shows. Cosmetology students have been beautifying Midlanders for several years now. And, when not providing their wonderful services free for a worthy cause, the program charges very nominal fees. Since 1986, more than 8,000 students have taken advantage of the original Abell-Hanger Scholarship, which was renamed Midland’s Legacy Scholarship in 2003 when the Helen Greathouse Charitable Trust became a funding partner. The Chaparral Foundation joined the partnership in 2006. Together, the three agencies provide more than $500,000 each year for scholarships, and in exchange, students have contributed more than 260,000 volunteer hours at more than 90 nonprofit agencies. In return for the scholarship, which pays their tuition and fees, students are required to complete at least 40 hours of volunteer service.

Bachelor’s Degrees at Midland College Midland College is now accredited to offer a Bachelor of Applied Technology degree in Organizational Management and offers students other upper-division degree opportunities from six universities — without having to leave Midland.

Bachelor of Applied Technology in Organizational Management It was an evening of cheers and tears, limos and love, pride and prayers, and well-earned awards as Midland College made history on Friday, May 11, 2007. MC’s 34th Commencement marked a major milestone as the college awarded its first Bachelor of Applied Technology degrees. The first eight students—Brad Cline, Amme Cole, Jennifer Conner, Louis Mata, Susan McMinn, Patrick Repman, Ann Saenz and Lisa Torres—to receive the four-year degree deserved a little pomp, and appropriately, arrived at commencement in a long, white limousine. They walked away from the ceremony with diplomas bearing the degree “Bachelor of Applied Technology in Organizational Management.” The four-year degree offers Associate of Applied Science graduates the opportunity to advance their education and pursue careers as supervisors, managers or executives in business, industry, and government. Graduates emerge from this unique program with an understanding of both management and specialized

fields of interest perspectives. This is not just a case of Midland College growing their own, but MC will now become a resource in Texas whereby students from many area junior colleges can continue to build on the educational background that they already began in their associate degree programs. This will give them a career ladder towards upper management and simultaneously serve the needs of businesses “This program has changed and industries in the our lives.” — Amme Cole Midland-Odessa area.

In spring of 2004, the program was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. In December of 2004, the program was approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The first classes were held in the fall of 2005 with an initial enrollment of 20 students. Over 150 students have now been admitted to the program.

Midland College’s University Center MC’s University Center is designed to serve students needing local options for either beginning or completing four-year degrees and beyond. Besides MC’s baccalaureate degree, programs and courses are now offered by six area universities on the Midland College campus: Angelo State University, Howard Payne University, Lubbock Christian University, Sul Ross State University, Texas Tech University, and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. A total of four master’s degrees, 11 bachelor’s degrees and two teacher certification programs are now offered by these six universities on the Midland College campus, using MC’s first class Distance Learning systems.

Petroleum Professional Development Center Midland College’s Petroleum Professional Development Center (PPDC) is housed in the Jack G. Elam Building in downtown Midland at the corner of Main St. and Illinois Ave. The PPDC was created on July 1, 2004 with the consolidation of the Permian Basin Graduate Center and MC’s Petroleum Geotechnology Training Center. The center is one of only seven mid-career training centers worldwide recognized by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).

Since the program’s inception in 1997, SIP students, led by Program Coordinator Laura McCabe, have reviewed a total of 298 grant applications, resulting in 165 funded grants, for a total of $187,003 in monies raised and awarded to area nonprofits.

The program has a long history of stewardship since 1997, when the Abell-Hanger Foundation first established the organization to provide student leaders the opportunity to improve the quality of life in their communities. In December of 2006, the Helen Greathouse Charitable Trust joined with Abell-Hanger to fund the program.

The consolidation of the two programs created a dynamic and diverse continuing education program expanding Midland College’s ability to offer the latest industry education to area oil and gas personnel. Many of the PPDC’s classes qualify for re-certification credits that Professional Engineers, Professional Geologists, Certified Public Accountants, and Petroleum Landmen use to maintain their certification status.

15 years!

The Cogdell Learning Center is home to Adult Basic Education, GED and English as a Second Language classes offered free to the public. The center also offers several MC developmental studies classes. The Business and Economic Development Center and Midland Need to Read are also housed at Cogdell, along with a range of outreach services to assist south and east Midland residents in accessing MC programs and resources, including the Bill Pace Cogdell Scholarship. A Community Liaison offers college planning and financial aid assistance to first-generation college students and others from the community.

Cogdell Center celebrates its 15th anniversary

Bill Pace Cogdell

Midland College’s dream of establishing a presence in south Midland came true in 1992 with Bill Pace Cogdell’s generous donation of the buildings in the 200 block of W. Florida Street, which now comprise the Cogdell Learning Center. This past October marked the Center’s 15th Anniversary, which was celebrated with a quinceañera-themed Fall Fair. Young women planning a quinceañera within the year participated in an essay contest, answering the question, “Why is it important for a young lady to go to college?” The winner, Mariana Mayoral, an 8th grader at Goddard Junior High received a quinceañera package valued at $950. The fair also included burritos, mariachi music, quinceañera cake and many children’s activities free to the public. Over 15 MC programs were present to discuss their resources and provide activities for participants. A special commemoration was also made to Bill Pace Cogdell, who died in 1997, leaving the generous Bill Pace Cogdell Charitable Trust. This scholarship trust has enabled over 40 students to earn certificates or degrees and continues to provide many MC students access to higher education. “It has been gratifying to see so many students benefit from the services available at Cogdell to access a college education and achieve their personal and career aspirations. The Bill Pace Cogdell Scholarship is truly changing the lives of individuals and families in this community,” said Cogdell Director Liz Zenteno.

Renovations almost complete! Renovation of the Cogdell Learning Center was included in the $41.8 million bond passed in 2005. Upgrades include a new Welcome Center, a public-access computer lab, new classrooms, new courtyards, and multiple interior and exterior enhancements. Completion is scheduled for this December, with an Open House planned soon thereafter.

New Welcome Center

“I congratulate all of the dedicated individuals involved over these past 15 years as they contributed to the success of the Cogdell Learning Center. Mr. Cogdell would be proud of the many Bill Pace Cogdell Scholarship recipients who have diligently pursued an Associate or Bachelor’s degree. Job well done!” — Carol Subia Co-Trustee of the Bill Pace Cogdell Charitable Trust

KIDS’ COLLEGE offers two sessions every summer for students in the first through the sixth grades. Each session is two weeks and offers a tremendous variety of classes during the afternoon.

College Classics is perhaps the most interesting of all Midland College classes to area senior citizens. The program, which was initiated in the spring of 1989, includes a series of courses designed especially for local residents who are 50 and older. Classes are offered through a semi-annual registration fee of just $25 per semester. The fall semester consists of two sessions. Three sessions are offered in the spring. The instructors of College Classics are recruited from among the Midland College faculty, continuing education teachers and community volunteers. With their areas of expertise and years of experience, these teachers truly bring to life such subjects as History, Genealogy, and Computer Basics. Several new classes have been introduced to this constantly growing program, including Handwriting Analysis, Pilates, Yoga, Investing, Identity Theft and Fraud, Classic Greece and Astronomy. Since its inception in 1989, the College Classics program has served over 1,000 senior citizens!

Corporate Giving Burlington Resources/ConocoPhillips is an excellent example of a corporate benefactor. Burlington Resources had a long history of giving to Midland College, even before being purchased by ConocoPhillips. Their first gift of $45,000 in 1993 went towards the renovation of the newly donated buildings which Bill Pace Cogdell gave to MC so the college could have a presence in south Midland. Since then, Burlington’s gifts total over $161,000 for such projects as the Dorothy & Todd Aaron Medical Science Building, the Fox Science Building and the Petroleum Professional Development Center. ConocoPhillips acquired Burlington Resources in late 2005 and has continued the tradition of supporting Midland College, most recently with a gift of $20,000 in September of this year. Together, ConocoPhillips and Burlington Resources have given $217,000 to MC. Their latest gift is directed to the Petroleum Professional Development Center (PPDC), whose Director, Hoxie Smith, responded, “MC’s Petroleum Professional Development Center sincerely appreciates this generous contribution from ConocoPhillips! The donation will allow MC to significantly expand its much needed computer training capability at the PPDC.”

Thank You Midland! Numerous construction and renovation projects, made possible by the $41.8 million bond overwhelmingly approved by the citizens of Midland in 2005, are well underway. When Midland College was designed in the early 70s, the administration estimated a maximum enrollment of 1,500 students. Typical semester enrollments are now four times that — around 6,000. “These additions and renovations constitute an entire transformation of the campus, while also accommodating the growth of the College,” said MC President David Daniel.

Current Major Bond Projects

Bond Progress

Academic Building:

The new, two-story classroom facility will house a 100-seat lecture hall; 36 classrooms; offices for adjunct University Center faculty; a student lounge on the second floor overlooking the campus; a landscaped plaza with a water feature; faculty offices and a large atrium with a small kitchen for lecture hall functions. It will also add 100 parking spaces to the campus. Construction of this facility is approximately 70 percent complete. Exterior brick and stone are being set. Interior walls are being erected, and electrical, mechanical and plumbing rough-in continues. The completion date for this building is estimated for late March, 2008.

Fox Science Building-Phase II:

The concrete slab was poured recently. Framing and pouring of the footings and foundation beams for the exterior connectors are complete. Steel erection is currently in progress.

Helen L. Greathouse Children’s Center

Currently going through the site preparation phase, the center is being relocated and expanded in order to more than double the amount of children served, as well as increase the age range to include infants.

22

Hydronic Line Replacement and other Heating and Cooling Projects: Trenching and welding for the installation of the new pipe is underway and 80% complete. The new chillers, boilers and expansion tanks have been set in the central plant, and the large pumps are currently being installed. The Central Plant building is currently being remodeled and nearing completion.

Cogdell Learning Center: Remodeling of this facility is complete and offices have been reoccupied. Final furnishings are now being purchased and placed. Both Adult Basic Education and Developmental Studies classes will resume in January 2008.

Master Plan

Vehicle Purchases:

Two pickup trucks, two minivans, two 15-passenger buses, three 24-passenger buses and one 38-passenger bus have been purchased. These vehicles are used to transport students, faculty and athletes on various MC sponsored field trips. All of these vehicles are noted for their high safety ratings. The smaller buses are painted and the large bus is scheduled to be painted.

Pedestrian Safety Measures: A six-foot-wide pedestrian sidewalk has been laid around two-thirds of MC’s Circle Drive for enhanced safety for both students and the community. The sidewalk has ADA access ramps and provides a comfortable and safer path for Midlanders to exercise and enjoy the campus. This project also included extensive landscaping with raised-crossing safety areas that slow traffic in the areas along the north part of Circle Drive, where students cross to go to the residence halls and the Jack E. Brown Dining Hall.

Maintenance Facility: The new building provides greater storage, organization and security for the college’s maintenance vehicles, equipment and supplies. A vehicle maintenance shop and woodworking shop are also part of the new facility, which serves as home to the grounds and maintenance employees. The Grand Opening was held on June 18, 2007.

MC Athletics — Championship programs Midland College is well known for all of its athletic programs: basketball, baseball, golf, softball and volleyball. Two programs, however, had a particularly good year in 2006-2007.

Golf — 2006 NJCAA National Champions Following a trying 2006 season that included the illness of the Chap’s long-time coach Delnor Poss, a constant reshuffling of the tournament line-up and dropping to their lowest ranking in recent history, the Chaparral golf team completed their improbable season with a national championship. Coach Poss’ line-up featured four freshmen (Kevin Carrigan, Nathan Sheen, Brady Shivers and Wynand Snyman) and one sophomore (Nils Bjorling), who were poised and destined to shake-up the tournament field. Playing at the Links at Sierra Blanca in Ruidoso, Midland College was ranked #6, yet highly regarded in junior college golf circles. The Chaps proved they had what it took to secure the national championship, the third in MC Men’s Golf history (1992 & 1995). And, for what could be regarded as his most challenging year, Coach Delnor Poss was named NJCAA Division I Golf Coach of the Year.

Men’s Basketball — 2007 NJCAA National Champions The 2007 Midland College Chaparral basketball team completed its post-season run going 4-0 in the NJCAA National Basketball Championship and they did it as a team. The Chaps completed the season with a 29-8 overall record including going 7-0 in the post-season (3-0 in the Region V Tournament and 4-0 in the National Championship Tournament). The national championship game was an ironic pairing between the Chaparrals and nationally ranked Chipola Junior College of Florida. The irony of the match-up was the fact that MC was the pre-season #1 ranked team in the NJCAA with Chipola being selected as the pre-season #2 team. Indeed, the ratings held true. When it was all said and done, the Midland College Chaps were crowned the 2007 NJCAA Men’s National Basketball Champions. And, Coach Grant McCasland was named Coach of the Tournament.

Chad Campbell David Chad Campbell — former MC graduate and now champion golfer — recently designated a $25,000 contribution to MC’s Golf program. The money, given by the PGA of America, came from the 36th Ryder Cup, held in September 2006 at the K Club in Straffan County Kildare, Ireland. As a Ryder Cup team member, Campbell was able to select Midland College to receive funding for the “Golf: For Business and Life” program. The program is the PGA’s college initiative designed to teach and improve the golf skills of students through instruction provided by PGA professionals, and to suggest ways in which the students can use golf as a business tool as they enter the professional world. This initiative is already underway in MC’s golf program. Campbell was born in Andrews, Texas and attended Midland College from 1992 to 1994 where he played golf under the instruction of coach Delnor Poss. He finished his bachelor’s degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He turned professional in 1996 and has since claimed three PGA Tour wins. Last year, he won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
