Migrating Development and Production Environment to the Cloud HOW YOUR ORGANIZATION CAN TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE BENEFITS OF THE CLOUD. Your organization has made the decision to move to the cloud. Here’s what you need to know.

OVERVIEW Your organization has made the decision to move to the cloud. The cloud assessements, application identification, and business cases are all complete. Now it’s time to execute and realize the benefits of the cloud. In general, Commvault has observed three primary goals that our customers hope to accomplish with their cloud initiatives: 1.

Running Production Applications in the Cloud. Right now, production applications are running in your current datacenter and the goal is to move the applications to the Cloud, however it must be done with minimal to no downtime. Challenges include:  How do you move data to the cloud?  How do you test the migration?  How do you validate the data before making the switch?

2.

Dev/Test in the Cloud. Our customers want to take advantage of the agility, elasticity, and economics of the “on-demand” environment provided by the cloud. Challenges include:  How do you protect workloads in the cloud?  How do you protect transient/unstable workloads in a Dev/Test environment?

3.

Disaster Recovery (DR) in the Cloud. Our customers no longer want to spend time, resources, or capital to have a standby datacenter with servers, storage, and networking waiting there idly in-case of a DR event. Our customers want to take advantage of the elasticity of the cloud with spin-up resources on-demand and the economics of paying for what is used. Challenges are:  How to automate failover to/from the cloud?  How to report on success/failure?  How to map on-prem to cloud resources?

What isn’t clear is how your organization is going to move and realize the benefits of the cloud. Right now, your applications are currently operating at your datacenter location and you are in the process of selecting a cloud provider… or perhaps you already have selected a cloud provider (or multiple providers). Commvault was one of the first data management companies to embrace cloud, has numerous connectors to get your data to the cloud, and can orchestrate provisioning of resources in the cloud. Now, Commvault is innovating in the cloud and once again leading the market with migrating applications to the cloud! It’s no wonder why Commvault has led the Gartner Magic Quadrant-1 for data protection for years. Commvault is moving beyond data backup and can now assist in migrating more 1

than just data, but also Development and Production applications to the cloud. To help our customers take advantage of the benefits of the cloud, Commvault is expanding its migration capabilities to enable migration to all the larger cloud providers (Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Oracle, etc.) These capabilities will complement our existing portfolio of continuous replication technologies.

HOW IT’S DONE How does Commvault accomplish migrating Development & Production Environments to the cloud and what unique value does Commvault bring? Moving applications to the cloud is top of mind for many organizations, and the need for cloud expertise is at a premium. Therefore, there are many new entrants in the market that don’t have the years of data management experience, especially those accustomed to handling business critical workloads. Commvault has a long and proud heritage of managing and orchestrating applications, where Commvault has gained our customers’ trust to protect their critical applications. Commvault has been supporting the Amazon cloud for years. Now Commvault is extending its capabilities to orchestrate the migration of your Development & Production Environments from on-premise to several of the major cloud providers. The first step to migrating your Development & Production Environments TO any platform with Commvault is installing Commvault in the environment and getting the data under Commvault’s protection. Next the production migration will be setup and managed through the Commvault admin console. Through the migration portal, the user will have the ability to:  

Choose Your Environment. Having the ability to select and group Development or Production movements is crucial for managing and scheduling the migration effort. Size Your Environment for the Cloud. Commvault will gather data and recommend a cloud instance as the target VM. Note, you will have the ability to “override” and manually select a target cloud instance in the setup wizard. Setup Initial Replication. A quick guided setup wizard will provide a series options and will result in initiating the replication, seeding data in the cloud, instance provisioning, and initial environment restoration. After the initial replication is complete, you will have access to your environment in the Cloud ready for validation testing. Schedule Replication. There are many reasons to schedule replication: bandwidth utilization, access to production resources, and coordinate database cut-over. In general, we observe that customers want to control the “update” synchronization between source and target databases due to validation testing. Cut-over. Once testing and validation is complete, an orchestrated final update is completed and replication is detached from the target environment.

WHY COMMVAULT Commvault makes your environment migration possible by leveraging a combination of the following Commvault foundational technologies: 

Application Agent. Provides common services across a wide variety of applications such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL, and SAP.

DASH Replication. Unlike traditional replication, DASH leverages deduplication technology, which significantly reduces the amount of data transferred between source and target; dramatically reducing network bandwidth requirements, which is ideal when migrating large quantities of data over external networks to the cloud.

Cloud Agnostic and multi-Cloud capable. Commvault software is not dependent on hardware vendors, providing Commvault software with the unique ability to be cloud-agnostic. Utilizing Commvault replication, we provide our customers the ability manage multiple clouds and cross-cloud replication, eliminating vendor lock-in and dependency.

Virtual Machine Provisioning in the Cloud. VM Provisioning is enabled through Commvault’s “activity pack,” with preset actions that can easily be orchestrated through Commvault’s Workflow language. Commvault software provides the ability to restrict AWS EC2 instance types, which assists in cost management and streamlining service offerings.

Workflow. Workflow is Commvault software’s automation and orchestration language, which coordinates the Oracle agent, DASH replication, VM provisioning in AWS, and post-migration configuration.

Efficient Movement to the Cloud. Using Commvault DASH technology can significantly reduce network bandwidth demands providing the ability to move data to the cloud faster.

SUMMARY Understanding the benefits of moving to the cloud may be easy; however, optimizing the value of the cloud to your organization is usually not so clear. Migrating and moving production applications to a new technology/environment can be complex, time-consuming, and fraught with challenge. This can make the path to value realization… well, “cloudy.” With significant experience in cloud migrations, Commvault is able to provide some important clarity to the migration of production applications to the public cloud. Commvault software has been protecting some of the world’s most critical applications and customer data for over two decades. Learn how Commvault can help protect your investment in data and technology, and migrate your critical environments to the cloud provider of your choice. You, too, can realize the benefits and the value of the public cloud.
