How to Transfer Email If you would like to move your email messages from your GCISD inbox to your personal Gmail inbox, you will need to use an email client like Thunderbird or Apple Mail (for Mac users). By using an email client you can drag and drop emails from one account into another. To do this using Thunderbird, follow these steps: Page 1

Step 1. Enable IMAP You must enable IMAP access for your GCISD mail account AND for your personal Gmail: Log into your GCISD email account. Click on the gear in the upper right-hand corner of your window and choose Settings from the drop-down menu Next, click Forwarding and POP/IMAP Under "IMAP Access" check Enable IMAP and click Save Changes Step 2. Download and install Thunderbird http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ Step 3. Set up Thunderbird with your GCISD email account and a personal Gmail account Thunderbird may prompt you to create an account or use an existing account. If so, select to use an existing account. If you're not prompted, go to the Tools menu to Account Settings. At the bottom of the window click on Account Actions --> Add Mail Account. Enter your name, email address, and password then click Continue. Thunderbird should find your settings wtihout any manual input. Click Done.

You will be taken to another sign-in screen for verification. Click Next, enter your password, then click Done on the final screen. Your main Thunderbird window will now show your GCISD account. Repeat the steps above for your personal Gmail account then both accounts will show on the left side of the Thunderbird window. IMAP syncs mail between the Thunderbird app and your mail in the Cloud. Depending on how much mail you have it can take several hours for this sync to happen and for Thunderbird to pull down all your mail and folders from both accounts. Once the sync is complete you can drag individual emails or whole folders from your GCISD account (in the Thunderbird app) to your personal account (in the Thunderbird app.) Once you have dragged your mail from your GCISD folder to your personal mail folder, it can take several more hours for Thunderbird to sync (upload) back to the Cloud. There will be a status update at the very bottom to let you know if it's still working.

IMPORTANT:

Once you complete the process of copying mail from your GCISD account to your personal account, go back to Account Settings --> Account Actions --> Remove Account. Repeat for each email account setup.
