2014 Pulse Check on Employer Preparedness for ACA Fact Sheet: Minority-Owned Businesses* Minority-owned businesses (94 percent) are far more likely to offer health care benefits to their employees than non-minority owned businesses (65 percent). Minority-owned businesses (97 percent) are also more likely to report feeling informed about their companies’ health care options than non-minority owned businesses (85 percent). More minority-owned companies (88 percent) are aware of the SHOP marketplace than non-minority owned businesses (73 percent). Minority-owned businesses are more likely than non-minority owned businesses to offer information to their employees about their health care options. • Significantly more (60 percent minority compared to 26 percent non-minority) provide a comparison of coverage among health insurance plans that are available. • Also, more minority-owned businesses (61 percent) provide materials from their company on options/choices than non-minority owned businesses (46 percent). Significantly more minority-owned businesses are taking actions (85 percent) in preparation for the ACA than non-minority owned businesses (58 percent). • More are researching details of the ACA (53 percent of minority-owned compared to 23 percent non-minority owned) and researching possible new health care benefits providers (40 percent of minority-owned compared to 19 percent of non-minority owned). According to the 2007 Statistical Abstract of the US, by the US Census Bureau, 768,000 of 5,753,000 or 13 percent of businesses with paid employees were minority- owned.

This online survey was conducted within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of the Transamerica Center for Health StudiesSM between March 26 to April 7, 2014 among a sample of 300 employee benefits decision makers aged 18+ (107 of whom represent minority-owned companies). Data were weighted (statistically adjusted) on employer size (by number of employees) to be representative of U.S. businesses. No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated; a full methodology is available upon request. *Minority owned businesses as defined by the US Census Bureau are businesses with non-white individual owners with over 51% cumulative ownership in a company.
